THE TAKE

A compelling battle for one of the last tickets to the Quarterfinal Playoffs takes place at Pionir Arena in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday when up-and-coming Partizan Igokea hosts Panathinaikos. The two teams enter the game tied for second place in Group D with 3-2 and only the winner will advance, while the loser goes home. The teams have met three times this season with the reigning Euroleague champs winning each time, but by a combined total of 7 points. Twice Partizan had the final ball and a chance to win it, but could not get a good shot off against the Panathinaikos defense. The battles between these teams are always compelling, in part because the Greens’ head coach, Zeljko Obradovic, got his start as a player at Partizan and later guided the club to its only Euroleague crown in 1992. This game promises to be a fascinating battle and not only because of the high stakes. The three previous thrillers this season – not to mention two exciting games last season and another decided by 1 point the year before – show how well these teams know each other. Moreover, the teams have made the needed adjustments so that no player has found a way to shine in all three games. The best performers in the series for Partizan have been center Nikola Pekovic with 16.7 points and 9.7 rebounds, and point guard Milt Palacio and swingman Dusan Kecman each with 13.7 points per game against the Greens. Meanwhile the Panathinaikos backcourt foursome of Vassilis Spanoulis, with 12.7 points and 3 assists, Sani Becirovic with 11 points and Dimitris Diamantidis and Sarunas Jasikevicius each with 10 have lead the Greek champs’ attack against Partizan. Any and all of these players could become the focal point for their team in Wednesday’s game. Another player that Partizan must worry itself with is Mike Batiste, who has been unstoppable of late, averaging 19.3 points on 82.1% two-point shooting in his last three games. Partizan’s general gameplan works through Pekovic, with power forward Novica Velickovic and Cedomir Vitkovac feeding off him. Panathinaikos stopped Pekovic last time they met by using a number of big men against him at both ends of the floor, slowing Pekovic on offense and causing him to foul out in just 24 minutes – his lowest minute total of the Top 16. Meanwhile the Serbian champs may need to use their depth to try and keep up with the Greens guards, whose depth allows them to always seem fresh. Ultimately this game has all the fixings of being another thriller to go to the wire. Conventional wisdom would make Panathinaikos the favorite due to its better results over the course of the season, not to mention experience, however anyone whose seen the three games between these sides this season surely understands that a true Euroleague Basketball battle is in store.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"We are ready to cause a sensation, even though we already have done so with our performances and results in the Euroleague so far. We will do our best to make our fans happy again. After three consecutive wins, we have are set to prepare for the big battle and to attack this great team from Athens. Our task is heavy one, but not impossible. We do have the right to have hope."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"This is the game for the qualification and this is how we are dealing with it. Partizan Belgrade will have high motivation like us, so I am expecting a big game that will be decided by small details. With no doubt, what I want to see from my players is concentration and determination for 40 minutes in such a crucial battle. If I had to give possibilities, I would honestly say that Panathinaikos and Partizan share 50-50."

Players

PEKOVIC, NIKOLA
Partizan Igokea
"Our wish to continue our winning streak in the Euroleague is a big one, but we are all aware of what is important before the game with big Panathinaikos, which is still the Euroleague champion. We all believe that we could finish the job together with our great fans. Partizan has won so many trophies in the past several years, but there is no game that could be compared with the game on Wednesday. This is the game that determines the destiny of Partizan and Panathinaikos. We are familiar with playing under pressure and I hope we can turn off all the outside influences and concentrate for the game."
PERPEROGLOU, STRATOS
Panathinaikos
"The game in Belgrade is a final for us and we have to beat Partizan in order to book a ticket towards the Euroleague playoffs. We know what kind of atmosphere to expect in Hala Pionir, where the fans are very hot and supportive and definitely our mission is going to be difficult. Panathinaikos is the current champ though and there is no possibility that we will allow the qualification to escape from us. We are in better shape recently, we have worked hard in practice and we will be ready for the tip-off."
Nikola Pekovic - Partizan Igokea A champion came crashing down as a basketball tradition rose up again when Partizan Igokea defeated Panathinaikos 82-73 in Group D on Wednesday to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs and liberate the Euroleague trophy for a new owner. A year after making its first Top 16 of the decade, Partizan went a step further, finishing 4-2 in Group D to set up a best-of-three playoff series with Group E winner Tau Ceramica. The heroes were many, but one a night when Panathinaikos neutralized Partizan's season-long star, Nikola Pekovic, two seasoned veterans led the way. Milt Palacio scored 24 points for the winners, including a killer driving layup heading into the final minute. Dusan Kecman has 16 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists, including a pair of late put-backs that settled the matter. Novica Velickovic added 11 points, among them a huge triple late, and Milenko Tepic 10 for Partizan, which ruled the boards to the tune of 37-18. Although it solved its turnover problems, allowing only 7, Panathinaikos could not overcome that rebounding disadvantage. The Greens grabbed a pair of brief late leads, but otherwise played from behind repeatedly. Partizan reached high leads of 9 points twice on Milenko Tepic triples, at 26-17 to end the first quarter and at 33-24 in the second. Pekovic hit a shot to match it shortly after halftime, but thereafter Panathinaikos got closer and closer until Palacio and Kecman made the difference down the stretch. Sarunas Jasikevicus led Panathinaikos with 20 points, while Mike Batiste added 12 and Vassilis Spanoulis 11.

Before the game started, sold-out Pionir Arena lustily welcomed Panathinaikos coach Zeljko Obradovic, not forgetting the man who coached Partizan's only Euroleague title team, in 1992. The scoring opened with Sani Becirovic hitting a jumper and Palacio bombing away to make it 3-2 and get the crowd going. Oddly enough, Kecman hit the second shot for Panathinaikos - an inadvertant tip-in that put the guests up 3-4 - but corrected it with a driving layup for his own team. Nobody missed as Batiste rolled to the hoop, Slavko Vranes hooked over him, Becirovic rained a triple and Velickovic drove for a layup. By the time Batiste hit a foul-line jumper, Panathinaikos led 9-11. When Palacio stepped into his second three-pointer and made it, Partizan had a new lead, 12-11, and a charged-up crowd. Next, Velickovic dunked off a steal, but Efstratos Perperoglou banged a jumper and his own fastbreak layup as the Greens went back in front, 14-15. Kecman took the lead back with free throws, Palacio hit a fadeaway and Petar Bozic bombed from deep as Partizan surged ahead 21-15. Pekovic came in then and downed his first shot, giving Partizan a 9-0 run and forcing a Panathinaikos timeout. Batiste got the Greens right with a tip-in, but Tepic faced up and beat the buzzer with a triple lift the crowd from its seats and the lead to 26-17 after 10 minutes.

Sarunas Jasikevicius - PanathinaikosPanathinaikos took a five-point bite out of the difference with a triple by Diamantidis and a two-pointer by Spanoulis to start the second quarter. Cedomir Vitkovac settled Partizan before Tepic kept up his hot hand from deep, making it 31-24. Tepic added an open baseline jumper to the lead to make it 33-24. Another tip-in by Batiste steadied Panathinaikos, then after stopping Pekovic, he fired in a turnaround jumper. Palacios hit free throws during a dry spell of shooting for both teams that he broke with a driving one-hander at 36-28. Diamantidis buried free throws, but Kecman matched him with an acrobatic layup. Spanoulis drove and shot over Vranes, then Jasikevicius hit 1 of 2 free throws at 38-33. Kecman made both of his foul shots before a timeout, after which Diamantidis struck from downtown again, cutting the difference to 40-36. Next, Diamantidis got the line and made one, but Partizan finally found Pekovic for just his second basket, enough to send the hosts to the lockers leading 42-37.

Velickovic posted up Becirovic and got 2 free throws from it to start the second half. When Pekovic then hooked over Batiste, Partizan had matched its high first-half lead, 46-37. Spanoulis quieted the crowd with a cold-blooded triple, and after Velickovic backed in again for a basket, Becirivoic's free throws made it 48-42. Jasikevicius got a rebound and went the other way to get Panathinaikos closer with a lane jumper, but Palacios answered with his third triple in as many tries at 51-44. Becirovic stayed perfect at the line, and when Palacios again rained a shot from the perimeter, Jasikevicius answered with the same to make it 53-49. Spanoulis kept the pressure up for Panathinaikos with an amazing baseline jumper. Partizan stayed static despite many second chances, and Jasikevicius made them pay with game-tying free throws at 53-53. But Partizan refused to hand over the lead. Vikovac drove one baseline for a layup and Kecman the other to make it 57-53. Then, Vitkovic cuet to take a great pass from Vranes, make the shot and the free throw that came with it at 60-53. Niksa Prkacin got a basket back for the Greens before the third quarter ended 60-55.

Prkacin started the fourth quarter with free throws, ubt Partizan rebounded and ran with Palacios hitting a layup at 62-57. Jasikevicius again found space again to shoot in from the top of the lane, but the Greens couldn't capitalize on a backcourt violation by Partizan, so Kecman hit free throws to make it 64-59. Jasikevicius wasn't done, but rather changed direction between his legs and drilled a triple. A steal and a fastbreak dunk by Diamantidis completed the Panathinaikos comeback at 64-64 with 6:42 to play. The Greens got their first since the opening quarter, 64-66, as Batiste hit a fadeaway from outside the paint. Palacios answered with a tough basket under the rim to tie 66-66. Jasikevicius got back to the line, making 1 of 2, while Tepic hit both of his free throws to make it 68-67 with 3 minutes left. Palacio also went to the line, hitting both. A huge shot came next, Velickovic shooting in a triple over Batiste at 73-67, but Jasikevicius hit 2 free throws now and the Greens forced another Partizan turnover. After a Panathinaikos timeout, Jasikevicius made an open two-pointer, making it 73-71, but Partizan answered with a tip-in by Kecman. Jasikevicius drove to get a basket back, but entering the last minute, Palacio did the same, stretching for a one-hander that seemed to break the backs of the champions. Panathinaikos passed around the perimeter on the next possession until Jasikevicius launched off-balance and missed, whereupon Pekovic took the rebound, got fouled and make both free throws. The process repeated itself, except that he missed the second and Kecman put back the rebound, making it 82-73. The reign of Panathinaikos was over, and the champs were replaced in the playoffs by a young, homegrown team and its euphoric fans.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"I am too happy that we reached the top eight in Europe. This success is a fantastic one. First of all, thanks to my players for the huge energy they gave. And second, I don't remember an audience or atmosphere like this one tonight. We are ready to struggle again with Tau Ceramica. We beat the European champ and we don't have the right to lay down now and enjoy that win."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"First of all, congratulations to Partizan for the win, which they deserved. Partizan played outstanding in this Top 16 Euroleague phase. We lost the game on offense because we missed three times in crucial moments. Panathinaikos has experienced players and I expected smarter, more patient play from them. Thanks to the Partizan fans for the phenomenal welcome. We have a huge problem at the power forward position. We missed Tsartsaris and that forced us to play with four small players."

Players

VELICKOVIC, NOVICA
Partizan Igokea
"We played a great game tonight against a great team, Panathinaikos, and against a great head coach, Obradovic. We showed our heart and our force. This is a real big win for Serbian basketball. Partizan lost three times against Panathinaikos until now this season, but we learned from each loss. Once I missed a three-point winner in one of them, but it was good experience for me and for our team. We got more and more experience after each loss and tonight we played all 40 minutes at high rhythm and with high energy."
BECIROVIC, SANI
Panathinaikos
"Congratulations to Partizan. Everything was fantastic: the audience, the performance, everything. The key for Partizan's win was definitely rebounding. Panathinaikos is more experienced and a more quality team, but Partizan handled the pressure much better."
