THE TAKE

Two teams looking for their first win in Group D face each other in the Spanish capital on Wednesday when Real Madrid hosts Asseco Prokom Gdynia. Madrid registered an 84-81 overtime road loss against BC Khimki Moscow region last week despite a monster game from Week 1 MVP Darjus Lavrinovic, who led his team with 32 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks en route to an outstanding 49 index. With Tomas Van den Spiegel and Felipe Reyes still sidelined, Lavrinovic leads Madrid's frontcourt along with experienced forward Jorge Garbajosa and last season's Euroleague Rising Star Award winner Novica Velickovic. Meanwhile, Prokom came up short against EWE Baskets Oldenburg 81-87 in Poland. The Polish champs must use their depth to try and cancel out Madrid’s battery of big men. Garbajosa will test his shooting skills against Prokom’s mobile big man Jan Jagla. Meanwhile, Velickovic has an interesting matchup against Ronnie Burrell. Adam Lapeta, Pape Sow and Adam Hrycaniuk are ready to battle against Lavrinovic. Madrid must be ready to stop Qyntel Woods, who has been in great shape recently and is a natural-born mismatch at small forward. David Logan is his perfect complement at guard due to his quickness and shooting range. Logan has a key matchup against Louis Bullock, but may also see playing minute against two very good defenders like Travis Hansen and Sergi Vidal. Meanwhile, Vidal and Rimantas Kaukenas have the tough goal of stopping Woods in what could be the key matchup of this game. Prokom counts on Daniel Ewing to run its offense, with Ty Brazelton coming off the bench, even though both players may team up court as well. Ewing has to face one of the best defensive guards in the competition, Pablo Prigioni. Meanwhile, Brazelton will test his physical skills against up-and-coming playmaker Sergio Llull. Madrid must be its usual self in defense - a trademark for all teams coached by Ettore Messina - and try to play with quick transitions. Prokom must run its offense through Logan and Woods and hope for Sow to stop Lavrinovic. Madrid is the favorite, but Prokom wants to show it is ready to compete at the highest Euroleague level.

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
Real Madrid
"It is our first home game in the Euroleague, so we have to play a good game in front of our fans and get that win. We know that Asseco Prokom has a talented team, with several players with ability to score. We are also aware that the fact that Felipe Reyes and Tomas Van den Spiegel are missing this game for us, will bring trouble for us in rebounding so we have to be ready to suffer under the boards to overcome this problem and take our first home win."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"You have to believe that you can beat every single team, even Real Madrid, which is one of the favorites to win the Euroleague this season. If we will play at our highest level, we can count on the win. Rebounding and good intensity on defense will be very important against Real. Real was a very strong team even before this season. Now it is much stronger and its hard to add anything else to that. After our defeat in the first game against EWE Baskets, we are looking for some extra points, and for the first Euroleague success. I hope that we will fight."

Players

LAVRINOVIC, DARJUS
Real Madrid
"After the first loss in the Euroleague we all want to win this one. We know that we will have an ambitious opponent, with several offensive players and with a coach that has given them a clear style since the opening game. We will be missing some frontcourt players that pace the team, but with our collective work we will have to make their absences go unnoticed. We have to be concentrated in defense and the rebounds. In the Euroleague you have to be a strong team at home, and we want to take that first step in front of our fans this week."
LAPETA, ADAM
Asseco Prokom
"Khimki Moscow proved that it is possible to beat Real. We know that it is not easy to play against Spanish teams on their court. We know that they are stronger than in the previous season, with Ettore Messina on the bench. It will be really, really hard to beat them but we are ready to give 100% of ourselves. We have to play on the absolutely highest level and then we have a chance."
Louis Bullock - Real MadridReal Madrid earned its first victory of the Euroleague season before its home crowd and handed Asseco Prokom its second defeat 94-72 on Wednesday in the Spanish capital. Head coach Ettore Messina’s team improved to 1-1 in Group D on the strength of an electrifying offensive display in the first half, hitting 81% from two-point range and 6-of-13 from long range, to go into the break up 18 and with the game well in hand. Darjus Lavrinovic led the winners with 19 points. Louis Bullock seconded his center's effort with 14, and Jorge Garbajosa scored 13, all in the decisive first half. Rimantas Kaukenas chipped in with 11 points while Sergi Vidal and Sergio Llull notched 10 points apiece. Qyntel Woods paced Prokom with a game-high 22 points. David Logan scored 19 and Ronnie Burrell had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Apart from barely missing from the field, Madrid also did its job on defense. After Logan scored a quick 15 points in the opening minutes to keep Prokom in the game, Madrid made sure he would not be a factor and shut him down while continuing to pour it on to run away with the game.

Garbajosa opened the scoring for Real Madrid with a three-pointer from the top of key. Daniel Ewing answered by slicing in for a layup. Travis Hansen drained a triple, and Logan matched him with one of his own in a frenetic first quarter. Lavrinovic scored to put Madrid up 8-5, but Logan attacked the basket for 2 more. Logan scored on back-back steals the guard turned into easy breakaway baskets for a 10-11 advantage. After a Madrid timeout, Bullock drilled a three from the wing. Logan, completely on fire, reached 15 points on back-to-back threes. Lavrinovic hit a triple from the corner, and Vidal finished a fastbreak to put Madrid up 20-17. Woods scored in the paint. Llull responded with a three, but Woods drained a deep triple. A floater and three-pointer from Garbajosa sent Madrid into the second quarter up 30-22.

David Logan - Asseco ProkomKaukenas made an easy layup to get the lead into double digits at the start of the quarter. Woods assisted a slashing Jan-Hendrik Jagla, but Lavrinovic finished a break with a slam to push the lead to 13. After a short quiet spell from both teams, Kaukenas swished an open jumper. Another empty trip from Prokom was taken advantage of by Hansen, who hit a tough jumper to put Madrid up 41-26. Burrell tried to stop the bleeding with a dunk, but Garbajosa dropped a jumper. Woods got 2 with a move in the post and then, after the rare Madrid miss, he assisted Burrell for a layin. But Kaukenas got a jumper to fall with the shot clock running down and Garbajosa got another three to keep extending the lead as Madrid went into the half up 51-33.

Woods started the third period firing a three-pointer from the wing. Lavrinovic responded by pulling in an offensive board and putting it back over two Prokom defenders, but Woods, knowing that it was now of never, stepped up and drained a three-pointer from the top of the key. The Prokom forward then assisted Burrell for an inside score, 55-41. Madrid turned up the defense once again to shut down Woods and grew its advantage with Lavrinovic scoring 4 free throws in a row. After Pape Sow scored inside, Vidal drove in and got a tough layin to fall. Lull earned 2 more on a goaltending call, and then picked up an unsportsmanlike foul from Woods on a breakaway and made the 2 free throws. Madrid was not to be stopped and went up by 25 as Vidal swished a three from the corner as the shot clock buzzer sounded and Madrid coasted to a 68-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The tide did not turn in the fourth as Lavrinovic scored inside and Bullock drilled another three-pointer. Novica Velickovic hit from one step behind the three-point arc and Madrid went up 78-47 after Vidal converted a steal into a layup. Bullock and Woods traded three-pointers, and then the two scorers each hit from two-point range. Prokom scored 6 points on baskets by Logan, Woods and Burrell, but Vladimir Dasic scored from deep and then assisted a cutting Lavrinovic for the easy bucket, 90-62. Burrell and Ewing nailed three-pointers and Woods broke away for a layup to get the deficit down to 20, but the game was long over by then.

Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
Real Madrid
"I am very happy with the outcome of this game. I am really satisfied with the intensity we put out there from the very beginning and the balance we had between offense and defense. The key to this game was being able to break it at the right time. It is an important win for us, because we are still missing some injured players. I want to highlight the good job my team did on offense, with many players in double digits, knowing what to do on the court."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"First of all, congratulations to Madrid for its great work tonight. They played really well. We committed many turnovers and this is something that has happened to us in the last games, a problem we have not been able to solve. We did not manage to stop Garbajosa and Lavrinovic early in the game and that cost us a big part of this game. Once we tried to rally in the second half, it was already too late. I am not happy because unlike Madrid, we didn't take many free throws. We tried to play more aggressively once the outcome was clear to be able to compete until the final second."

Players

VIDAL, SERGI
Real Madrid
"We did what we had to do, which is play aggressive and do a good job in all aspects of the game. We moved the ball really well in offense, finishing important offenses in the best way possible. Personally, I am expecting to improve my game even though I did alright tonight. Personally, and as a team, there is a lot of room for improvement, but we are working in the right direction to do that. Madrid managed to play at the same level all 40 minutes, and this is something we have not been able to do a lot so far this season. We managed to stay intense for all 40 minutes, staying focused in the second half."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"We were really focused tonight and played really well. We knew what we had to do from the very beginning. We managed to lock the defensive rebounds and circulate the ball really well. We felt very comfortable on the court tonight. We are happy to add our first Euroleague win this season. As for the game, it is a good step forwards for the upcoming game against Panathinaikos next week. I am happy because I always try to do my best to help my team work and I think this is what I did tonight."
BURRELL, RONNIE
Asseco Prokom
"We had a bad game against a great team. They dominated the boards and executed the pick-and-roll really well. We cannot commit so many turnovers. We have to improve a lot in this direction. I am not happy with my work tonight. I am only happy when we win and that didn't happen tonight."
JAGLA, JAN-HENDRICK
Asseco Prokom
"We played against a very good team tonight. Of course, we came here to win, but were fully aware that we were facing a very tough game from the very beginning. We struggled when David Logan stopped scoring, but that is logical, we cannot pretend to win a game like this with all our points coming from the same player. We had to help him out and did not manage to do that. Personally, I think I had a bad game. I am still adjusting to this team, I am new in a team with a lot of players from last season."
