THE TAKE

Age-old rivals will meet with more than just bragging rights up for grabs when Partizan hosts Cibona Zagreb in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday in Group B. Cibona (2-1) wants to keep pace with the group leaders, while Partizan (1-2)wants to join them. These teams have already met once this season domestically, with Cibona scoring an 84-62 home victory last month in Adriatic League action in which point guard Davor Kus and power forward Brent Wright had 14 points each for Cibona, while Kosta Perovic and Predrag Drobnjak had 15 and 14 points, respectively, for Partizan. Cibona is coming off a big Group B overtime victory against Unicaja in Belgrade. Kus and Jerry McCullough combined for 39 points in that one, while Wright added 16. Partizan, which took down Maccabi Tel Aviv in its only home game until now, was roughed up last week by Joventut in Badalona, 82-51. The inside duo of Perovic (10.3 ppg., 9 rpg.) and Drobnjak (18 ppg., 6.3 rpg. and 2.3 spg.) were again the lone bright spots for the Serbian champs. Partizan is still waiting for a break-out game from guard Uros Tripkovic, whose scoring touch could open up the floor for the rest of the Partizan attack. Cibona's top weapons have been on the perimeter, with Kus averaging 14.3 points and Chris Warren 13.7. The Croatian champs will need big men Marton Bader, Jurica Zuza, Marin Rozic and Wright to be ready on defense to stop Partizan's scoring towers, who are also fine free-throw shooters. Partizan playmaker Vonteego Cummings will hope to lead his team's young backcourt to better production. One telling matchup could be Tripkovic and Warren, either of whom who can put his team over the top with with a big night. In a rivalry like this one, past performances and statistics go out the window as the players come out charged with pride. With so many young players on these teams, that makes the game even more unpredictable. Whichever role players make an impact quickest will give their team a big advantage.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Cibona is a team with up to 12 quality players. They can play very fast and aggressive with lot of deadly fastbreaks. Cibona is already in a shape. They have two wins in the Euroleague so far, and they are coming to Belgrade unpressured. It's a very dangerous team. We cannot let the importance of this game be an impediment to our players. Cibona has a psychological advantage, but we believe in ourselves and in our great fans. With their support, we can win."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"We have to forget about the first Adriatic League game this season against Partizan, which we won by a big margin. That was a month ago and if we think about it too much, it is not going to end well for us. Partizan is a much stronger team on its home court, and they have played great with just one exception - last week's game in Badalona, where they fell apart. The atmosphere in Belgrade will be tough, but this must be a motivation for us to show that we are a strong team not only when playing in Zagreb. I am interested in how my players will react on such a loud court, and in whether they'll be able to keep their concentration and balance for all 40 minutes of the game. We have some problems with injuries, but no matter who travels or plays, we have to prove that we are a team."

Players

BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan
"There are lot of great players on Cibona. I think the most dangerous are Kus, Warren, McCullough and Vrbanc. Those big individuals play for the team, which is a great thing for Cibona and a bad thing for their opponents. We lost an Adriatic League road game to Cibona this season and that was real bad experience for us. I think we can win only if we play with high intensity on defense and with patience on offense, controlling the ball. If the game is played atour rhythm, we can beat Cibona."
KRASIC, BARISA
Cibona
"We travel to Belgrade to continue our winning streak. The main thing we have to improve is our concentration in the last 10 minutes when we play away. We have shown that we can play well against the strongest teams, but it usually lasts for 25 or 30 minutes, and then we stop and lose the game. They are really strong inside, but we have shown in the Adriatic League game against them in Zagreb this season that we can handle it. I have played three games in Belgrade in a Cibona jersey, and we have lost each time. Now, I think the time has come to change that."
Partizan Predrag Drobnjak's dunk capped a 12-2 run in the second overtime to give Partizan a thrilling 101-92 win over rival Cibona Zagreb at Pionir Arena on Wednesday night in Belgrade, Serbia. 6,000 fans cheered on the home side for the 50-minute encounter, which was the first double-overtime game in the Euroleague this season. The game saw five Partizan players foul out and four more from Cibona. Drobnjak finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds, while playing 41 minutes. Vonteego Cummings was on the court for 44 as he amassed 14 points and 7 assists. Center Kosta Perovic dominated inside with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 blocks before fouling out. Luka Bogdanovic added 11 points and Novica Velickovic had 10. Davor Kus was the last man standing for Cibona, scoring the team's final 8 points. He finished with 17 points after drawing 11 fouls and going 11-for-12 from the line. Brent Wright also drew 11 fouls and finished with 17 points and 10 boards. Jamal McCullough added 12 and Luksa Andric had 10.

The game began with both teams playing nervous basketball. It took two minutes before Goran Vrbanc netted the first basket for the visitors. Drobnjak answered with a three-point play, before Wright did the same at other end of the floor. Cibona took an 9-13 lead with some strong defense, but the visitors could not stop Perovic, who scored 6 straight points as Cibona held a 15-17 advantage after 10 minutes.

McCullough pushed Cibona forward in the second period and when Andric scored twice off the offensive glass, the visitors led 18-23. Cummings answered with the first three-pointer of the game to keep the game close. Drobnjak had problems guasrding Andric and was replaced by Velickovic, who tied the score at 25-25 midway through the quarter. Dusan Kecman capped a 9-2 run for Partizan that gave the hosts a 27-25 lead. The teams were trading points in a low scoring game. Perovic scored 7 straight for Partizan, but McCullough stepped up for Cibona as the teams headed to the locker rooms tied 39-39.

Davor Kus - CibonaPerovic opened fire in second half, quickly drawing fouls from Marton Bader and Kecman for a 45-41 Partizan lead. When Milenko Tepic missed twice from the line, Perovic grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. He hit one and on the other end blocked Wright, leading to a Drobnjak fastbreak basket and a Partizan 7-0 run. Kus finaly scored for Cibona, but Uros Tripkovic answered with a bomb forcing Cibona to call timeout down 51-43. Cummings made it a double-digit margin from the line as Cibona began to fall back. But Perovic went due a rest and the visitors made a fast 0-9 run with 4 points from Marin Rozic. Partizan woke up in the last minute of third period to keep a 59-55 lead after 30 minutes.

Cibona went scoreless more than two minutes in the final period and Partizan took advantage to lead 64-55. Finaly McCullough netted Cibona's triple of the game, but Bogdanovic scored 5 straight points. However Wright and Bader scored at the other side and closed the gap to 66-62 with four minutes left. Cibona made a 2-8 run and the game came into dramatic final minutes. Marijan Mance cut hosts' lead to 70-69, Kecman and Tripkovic missed, and Kus turned the score into 70-71 in the last minute of the game. Drobnjak's layup was met by Mance's jumper. Drobnjak came through again with 12 seconds left to put Partizan up 75-73. After a timeout, Kus tied from the line and Partizan had the last ball in regulation. Perovic missed a layup the 75-75 score meant overtime.

Cummings opened the overtime scoring from the line. McCullough answered with triple and Perovic tied it again from the free-throw line. Jurica Zuza gave the guests a 2-point advantage, but Perovic tied it again as players began to drop like flies due to foul problems. Zuza and Tepic traded baskets in the last minute of overtime and Zuza netted one more to tie again at 83-83 and bring on another five minutes of action.

Perovic fouled out in the first minute of the second overtime, but Tepic and Cummings gave Partizan an 87-84 lead and the hosts switched to zone to try to protect it. Kus scored, but Tepic and Drobnjak hit back with 4 points aa the arena prepared to celebrate. Bogdanovic added 2 from the line, Velickovic sealed the victory with 4 points and Drobnjak punctuated the result with a slam dunk.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Partizan players were extra motivated and they were brave in the first place. They showed brave heart scoring from the penalty line in crucial moments. We finished the game with four guards. Partizan was back into ther game in regulation with a triple from Drobnjak. Perovic played very well in the first half, Tepic and Velickovic in 2 overtimes. Cibona came to Belgrade unloaded and they had not so much to lose."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"At the beginning of the third period we lost control of the game. Later we lost a lot of our strenght to be back into the game and in the final minute of regulation we were in a wining situation. But we could not keep Drobnjak from hitting the three-pointer at the end. In the first overtime we missed the opportunity to win the game and in the second we lost key centers and we could not manage to do anything else."

Players

PEROVIC, KOSTA

"This is a big victory. Important on our way to the Top 16. Congratulations to all my teammates and many thanks to our fans. I think it will be the same in future games. Nobody can book an easy win here in Belgrade."
BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan
"Very hard game and important win. With our fantastic supporters we made it. Our fans are the best in the whole world. With their help we could have finished the game in regulation and in the first overtime but in the end we deserved that win."
