THE TAKE

An all-Spanish showdown in Group C takes place on Thursday when DKV Joventut hosts Tau Ceramica in Badalona. The two teams just faced each other in the Spanish League last Thursday, also in Badalona. Tau downed Joventut 83-97 behind 24 points from Igor Rakocevic. Tiago Splitter added 21 and 12 rebounds, while Bracey Wright led Joventut with 22 points. Of course, stopping Rakocevic will be the main issue for DKV. Rakocevic is right at the prime of his career and currently is the Euroleague top scorer at 21.8 points per game, hitting 12 of 21 three-pointers and making all 19 free throws that he has attempted. Even with forward Pete Mickeal in doubt, Tau counts on a solid backcourt that features former Euroleague assists champion Pablo Prigioni, former Joventut swingman Sergi Vidal, playmaker Mustafa Shakur, small forward Fernando San Emeterio and combo guard Robert Hite, who missed last week's game against Joventut due to stomach problems, but is fully recovered. Prigioni is set to have a key matchup against Demond Mallet, as Joventut has no other pure playmaker available with Ricky Rubio still sidelined. Pau Ribas seems the right man to guard Rakocevic due to his intensity and quickness, while Wright will test his scoring skills against him. Ferran Laviña and Simas Jasaitis, who played for Tau last season, will share minutes at small forward against Vidal and San Emeterio. Meanwhile, Luka Bogdanovic has improved as the full-time power forward, as he can open the court with his three-point shots. And on the topic of three-pointers, few players are as effective as Tau power forward Mirza Teletovic. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca offers size and timing against Splitter, in yet another key matchup. If Hernandez-Sonseca gets into foul trouble, Henk Norel and Jan Jagla will see minutes at center, as Pops Mensah-Bonsu remains sidelined. Tau needs Splitter to play aggressive along with Will McDonald, who is having a career-best Euroleague season so far. Tau rolled in Badalona last week, not giving Joventut many chances. The hosts have surely learned from their mistake and both teams scored more than 100 points in the Spanish League this weekend. Expect a way different game this time around.

GAME QUOTES

DKV Joventut
  • Sharpshooter Simas Jasaitis will face a number of former teammates this week, as the forward won the Spanish League last season with Tau Ceramica. Jasaitis has played for four different teams in the last four seasons, including this one. In the past three years, he led each team to their domestic championship: Lietuvos Rytas in Lithuania in 2006, Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel in 2007 and Tau in Spain last year.
  • Forward Luka Bogdanovic made a Euroleague career-best 7 three-pointers and matched his career-high of 21 points in his last game. So far this season, Bogdanovic’s minutes and scoring has improved in every game so far.
Tau Ceramica
  • Guard Igor Rakocevic needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Tiago Splitter is 10 rebounds away from reaching 500 for his Euroleague Basketball career. He would be the 25th player to achieve that distinction.
  • Tau Captain Sergi Vidal, who has spent the past eight seasons at Tau, began his career in Badalona. He made one appearance with the senior team at Joventut before signing for Tau, where he has been since.

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"Personally, I don’t like very much playing against a Spanish team in the Euroleague, but it’s something we cannot change and we have to do it. We played against them few days ago, in our domestic competition, but I think this game is going to be quite different. It will be different because every game is a different story, not because it’s a different competition. I’m sure both teams will try to do something new to surprise the other team and have better chances to win. I think Tau is in good shape. Our last games were good and we are improving, but I think that defense must be our trademark. We are better than we were in the beginning, but we still have to work on it."

"My opinion is that the game against DKV Joventut is going to be different than the one we played recently in our domestic competition. They are pretty dangerous at home and it will be very tough to win there once again. We will probably play different tactically, and I’m sure they will do the same. They would probably pay more attention to my game because of the numbers I’m making lately, so I must be focused to read the game and have a good timing to find my teammates, who could have more open spaces. DKV Joventut is a team in which almost all players can play open basketball, shooting three-pointers and playing very aggressive defense and fastbreaks."
Edu Hernandez Sonseca - DKV JoventutDKV Joventut rejoined the Top 16 race in Group C by downing Tau Ceramica 105-100 in Badalona, Spain on Thursday night. Joventut had its best game so far this season to improve to 2-3 in the standings. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica went down to 3-2 and ties for second place in Group C. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca paced the winners with 24 points on 12-for-12 free throws and 10 rebounds. Demond Mallet added 17 points, Pau Ribas had 12 while Henk Norel got 10 for Joventut. Tiago Splitter led Tau with 23 points. Igor Rakocevic and Mirza Teletovic each added 18 while Pablo Prigioni and Sergi Vidal had 11 apiece for the guests. Splitter and Fernando San Emeterio took over in the first quarter to make Tau get a 15-26 margin after 10 minutes. Joventut found its go-to guy in Mallet and Ferran Laviña, who fueled a 14-0 run that helped the hosts to get a 51-43 halftime margin. Hernandez-Sonseca and an outstanding Norel shined late in the third quarter, allowing Joventut to boost its margin to 84-69 after 30 minutes. An outstanding Teletovic singlehandedly brought Tau within 100-97 with 2 minutes to go but Joventut stayed focused and sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Mallet got Joventut going with a four-meter jumper that Rakocevic erased with free throws. Joventut placed Laviña in the starting lineup to go against Prigioni. Splitter scored down low but a layup by Luka Bogdanovic tied it at 4-4. Splitter kept pacing Tau with consecutive baskets in the low post, as Rakocevic had troubles against Bracey Wright. Norel took over with a put-back dunk that Splitter improved with an outstanding layup-plus-foul for a 6-11 Tau margin. Will McDonald made free throws, as Joventut had already entered the foul bonus. Simas Jasaitis stepped up with a put-back layup that Pau Ribas followed with a five-meter jumper to bring Joventut back to life, 10-13. Tau could not get Splitter involved now but San Emeterio took over with three consecutive layups, good for a 10-19 margin. Jasaitis made free throws that Splitter matched with a reverse layup. San Emeterio kept pacing Tau with free throws while Pere Tomas and Sergi Vidal traded triples to fix the score at 15-26 after 10 minutes.

Tiago Splitter - Tau CeramicaJoventut improved its offense right at the start of the second quarter, as Mallet sank a three-pointer while Jasaitis buried a jumper off the dribble to get the crowd involved at 20-26. Vidal nailed a three-pointer but Norel answered with a layup and Wright sank a free throws - his first point - to keep DKV within 23-29. Mustafa Shakur scored off a backdoor pass from Vidal but Wright answered with a close jumper. Rakocevic joined the three-point shootout but Mallet and Bogdanovic answered from downtown to bring the hosts even closer, 31-34. Laviña scored in penetration and Mallet added a fast break layup off a Tau timeout to complete the hosts' comeback, 35-34. Hernandez-Sonseca dunked it and added free throws to cap a 14-0 run, as Splitter stepped up for Tau with a foul shot. Mallet buried a long jumper that Teletovic improved with a triple. Ribas answered from downtown while Hernandez-Sonseca gave DKV a 46-38 margin. Jan Jagla fired in a triple but Splitter followed free throws with a three-point play. Mallet scored in transition for a 51-43 Joventut lead at the break.

Rakocevic took over with an off-balance layup-plus-foul right after the break. Laviña scored twice in penetration, as Splitter now had problems to beat Hernandez-Sonseca. Rakocevic sank an open jumper that McDonald followed with a fast break dunk to get Tau back in track, 55-50. An unstoppable Laviña added another layup that Rakocevic matched with foul shots. Mallet took over with his third three-pointer that Hernandez-Sonseca followed with a layup-plus-foul to give DKV some fresh air at 63-54. Jagla shined with a power layup and Ribas scored again but Prigioni struck twice from downtown to get Tau within 67-60. Hernandez-Sonseca followed free throws with an easy basket in a 6-0 Joventut run that Jagla capped with a fast break basket to make Tau call timeout at 73-60. Vidal and McDonald hit free throws but a corner triple by Tomas made it a 14-point game, 76-62. Norel provided a highlight with a power dunk and then followed Ribas' fast break layup with a three-point play, good for a 84-69 Joventut margin after three quarters.

Ribas scored in transition early in the fourth quarter, as the guests kept committing turnovers. Meanwhile, a layup by Bogdanovic broke the game open, 88-69. Teletovic and Splitter tried to change things with free throws but Joventut was already using long possessions to run the game clock down. Meanwhile, Prigioni and Vidal struck from downtown to bring Tau back in the game, 88-79. Joventut called timeout and Hernandez-Sonseca rescued the hosts with another basket but Rakocevic ans Splitter kept Tau within 90-83. Mallet left the game with an injury while Hernandez-Sonseca and Rakocevic traded foul shots. Tau did not improve its defense right when it mattered while Hernandez-Sonseca took over with a three-point play and added free throws for a 98-87 lead with 4 minutes to go. Teletovic buried a jumper and added a triple to give Tau some hope, 98-92. Wright shined with a tough basket that Teletovic matched with a reverse layup and added a seven-meter bomb for a 100-97 Tau deficit with 2 minutes remaining. Wright and Hernandez-Sonseca made free throws to seal the outcome, as Tau did not recoved, allowing all Joventut fans to celebrate a big win.

Head Coaches

ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"I am happy because it was a win that we really needed and which allows us to stay close to the Top 16 at this point. We were able to score against a great team like Tau Ceramica. We improved our stability as a team and group. I congratulate my players, especially Pere Tomas and Henk Norel, for the important work they did. We fought to win and the only negative note is Demond Mallet's injury, I hope it is nothing serious. Today the crowd was not much into the game at the beginning, just like us, but later they pushed us towards the win and they had an important role in this triumph. We needed a victory like this."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"DKV Joventut beat us tonight because we played their game, it was like a spider web from which we didn't know how to escape. We got into their fast game and they deserved to win the game. We did not play as intense as the game we won here against them last Thursday in the Spanish League. We didn't defend, I am not happy with our defense tonight. We thought we had won this game before it even started and they went for it, so they deserve this win."

Players

HERNANDEZ-SONSECA, EDU
DKV Joventut
"Personally, I am really happy. The team played well and that also is satisfactory to me. The game was long and tough but we got our reward. I was aware that tonight I'd had to fight straong against Tau's great big men. Now we have to think about beating Union Olimpija and Lottomatica Roma. I hope our fans are happy with this win, we are. We did our best efforts and they were worth it."
