THE TAKE

A clash with major Top 16 implications in Group A takes place on Thursday when Air Avellino hosts Maccabi Electra. Avellino will be out to leapfrog Maccabi for forth place in the group – the last spot that leads to a berth in the Top 16, while Maccabi knows that a win would bring the club to the verge of clinching a spot in the next round. The hosts are 2-4 this season having won each of their last two home games. But head coach Zare Markovski’s men are coming off their worst defeat so far, a 25-point thrashing at Olympiacos. Meanwhile Maccabi is 3-3, but gaining strength now that head coach Pini Gershon has already been with the club for two whole weeks. The club outlasted Cibona last week thanks to a big game from Lior Eliyahu, who scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds last week as he earned the Euroleague weekly MVP honor. It was different Maccabi player that shined when these teams met in Tel Aviv in Week 2 as Carlos Arroyo produced 20 points and 8 steals to lift the hosts to a 90-83 decision. If Avellino is ahead in the fourth quarter, the 7-point differential from that game will play a major role as a potential head-to-head tiebreaker. Avellino will be ready for Maccabi’s top weapons with a host of experienced players. Travis Best and Antonio Porta will challenge Arroyo at point guard, with Drake Diener and perhaps at time the club’s top scorer Chris Warren ready to stop Maccabi shooter Marcus Brown or do-it-all swingman Tal Burstein. Forward Tamar Slay has the skills to guard Eliyahu in what could amount to one of the keys to the game for both teams. D’Or Fischer is Macani’s main reference in the paint with Yaniv Green scheduled to spell him against Eric Williams and Andrea Crosariol. Marko Tusek and Nikola Radulovic add size, experience and versatility up front, which Omri Casspi and newcomer Elton Brown may be asked to deal with. The 80-point mark could be a good indicator of the outcome for this game. Avellino has won both games in which it has held its opponent to less than 80, while Maccabi is 3-0 when scoring at least 80. The experience factor gives Maccabi and Gershon an advantage in this potentially make-or-break encounter, however with nearly two-thirds of the season now in its rear-view mirror, Avellino will be ready for the challenge, making this game one not to miss.

GAME QUOTES

Air Avellino
  • Guard Antonio Porta has squared off against Maccabi’s Carlos Arroyo in national team competition in the Americas. Porta is a member of the Argentinean national team and Arroyo plays for Puerto Rico. They last met at the FIBA Americas 2007 tourney in Las Vegas where Porta won a silver medal and Arroyo a bronze.
  • Forward Tamar Slay is no stranger to big games against Maccabi. His first stop in Europe was with Maccabi’s main rival in Israel, Hapoel Jerusalem, where he spent a season-and-a-half.
  • Big man Eric Williams recorded season lows in points (5), rebounds (2), playing time (15:50) and index rating (4) in the game in Tel Aviv against Maccabi.
  • Guard Drake Diener of Air Avellino scored 13 points in the game in Tel Aviv. That was the first and only time he scored in double figures in his Euroleague career. He also recorded career bests in assists (3), steals (2) and three-pointers (3) in that game.
  • Guard Mike Nardi had his best Euroleague game so far with 10 points in 14 minutes last week against Olympiacos.
Maccabi Electra
  • Swingman Tal Burstein needs just 2 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Guard Marcus Brown played for Italian powerhouse Benetton Treviso during the 2000-01 season. He is the only current Maccabi player with experience in the Italian League.
  • Guard Carlos Arroyo’s best game of the season so far came against Avellino. In the game in Tel Aviv, he recorded career highs in points (20), assists (8) and index rating (33).
  • In the seasons that Pini Gershon has started at Maccabi, his record against Italian teams stands at 22-4. Two of the losses were in Tel Aviv, both of Fortitudo Bologna, while Scavolini Pesaro and Olimpija Milano had the honor to be the only teams to beat Maccabi, under Gershon, on Italian soil.
  • 16 of those 26 games of Gershon against Italian teams were decided by up to 7 points. One of them went to double overtime, another to a single overtime and seven were decided by a single basket.
  • On the other hand, when Gershon took over the Maccabi's bench in mid-season, in the 1998-99 season, his record against Italian teams was one win and three losses.
  • Two of Maccabi's biggest wins in the Euroleague were under Gershon against Italian teams. In the 2004-05 season, Maccabi slashed Scavolini Pesaro 123-73 win in Tel Aviv. And in the 2004 Euroleague championship game, Maccabi destroyed Fortitudo Bologna 118-74.

Quotes Head Coaches

MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"We must play with the same intensity that we showed against Siena in the Italian League. Only in this way Avellino will be able to compete with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Looking back at the match played in Tel Aviv, we have to keep up an high level of concentration and defend hard for all 40 minutes. On one hand we have to think to win, but on the other hand we should imagine overturning the score, if possible. This game is like a playoff for us, but it’s an important match for Maccabi too. They probably feel more pressure than we do."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"The game in Avellino will be our chance to see if we can show stability or not. I wish and hope we'll maintain the game style we adopted in the last games also in Italy, and not allow them to force us to play in a different style. They depend a lot on their shots from outside, and we will try to cut down on their percentages from long range. They are a team with a tough home gym, where it's very difficult to win, as a strong team like Unicaja felt themselves a few weeks ago. It will be a tough match, but we need this win to get us very, very close to secure our spot in the Top 16."

PORTA, ANTONIO
Air Avellino
"The game against Maccabi will be obviously very hard. Probably we have our last chance to get to the Top 16 against Maccabi Tel Aviv. To win we should defend hard and lead the game. Above all we must play with the right spirit and the right concentration. We'll have to play with great intensity all the game too, avoiding any kind of mistakes to not allow them some scoring runs."
CASSPI, OMRI
Maccabi Electra
"This win is very much important for us. First it will open a big gap between us and Avellino in the standings and bring us closer to the Top 16. Second, we must pick up good momentum, and gain confidence towards the finish line of the regular season. The best way to get there is with a road win, especially in a tough place like the home court of Avellino. We are very focused and feel more and more comfortable with Pini's system, but it's up to us, the players, to execute on court in the games what he's teaching us in the practices."
Marcus Brown - Maccabi ElectraMaccabi Electra moved ever closer to a ticket to the Top 16 with its first road win of the season, 72-86 at Air Avellino on Thursday. Aggressive play from a trio of big men and a season-high 26 points from Marcus Brown guided Maccabi to the victory. Head coach Pini Gershon’s men improved to 4-3 and are now just one win behind the group leaders. Moreover, Avellino dropped to 2-5 and having lost twice to Maccabi, must win all of its remaining games and have other results go its way to have a chance at reaching the next stage. Avellino kept it close for a period-and-a-half thanks to some red-hot three-point shooting and savvy game management by playmaker Travis Best. But Brown, D’Or Fischer and Yaniv Green helped the visitors take a 40-48 halftime lead and Lior Eliyahu cranked the advantage up to 14 early in the third period. Avellino continued to fight on, but never got closer than 7 after that. Eliyahu followed up last week’s MVP performance with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Fischer posted 17 points and 10 rebounds and Green added 14 points and 7 rebounds. Best paced Avellino with 17, Tamar Slay added 14 and Marko Tusek scored 13. All three made 3 three-pointers.

Maccabi won the opening tip and Carlos Arroyo pulled up for three, but he missed and Slay made a triple on the other end for the game’s first points. Fischer hit a jumper to get Maccabi on the scoreboard and the Omri Casspi fed Green for a slam and Maccabi’s first lead. Fischer added a basket-plus-foul on the offensive glass to make it 3-7 before Best answered from downtown for the hosts. Slay triple put Avellino ahead before Brown fired one in from behind the arc. Best tied the game at 11-11 with a floater as the pace settled. Eliyahu came off the bench and made an impact with points on four straight possessions – including a wicked slam dunk in traffic – but a Tusek three-pointer and Drake Diener basket kept the hosts close. But penetrations from Tal Burstein and Arroyo pushed Maccabi ahead by 6. Antonio Porta charged the Avellino attack with a jumper and then Diener also scored to make it 20-22 after 10 minutes.

Travis Best - Air AvellinoGreen fed Brown from the high post for a layup to start the second period, but Tusek bettered that with a triple from the corner. Brown continued to produce at the offensive end for the visitors, but Tusek’s third three kept it a 2-point game. Best and Chris Warren – with his first point of the game – tied the score at 32-32. Eliyahu took a rest and Fischer stepped up with a jumper and some rebounds. Then Green went through Williams for a basket-plus-foul. Diener kept Avellino in the picture with his team’s eighth three-pointer of the half, but Brown free throws and Fischer underneath put Maccabi up 5. Porta and Tusek scored from the line, but a Fischer offensive rebound, slam and foul and a Derrick Sharp three helped Maccabi take a 40-48 lead at halftime.

Eliyahu came out for the second half on fire and his bucket on the offensive glass gave Maccabi its first double-digit lead. Best did his best to keep Avellino from falling apart with a floater and a triple, but a pair of baskets from Eliyahu followed by a Brown three from the corner raised the advantage to 47-61. Warren took advantage of a wild Eliyahu pass for a steal and dunk, but on the next trip downcourt Avellino suffered a blow as Best and Slay each picked up their fourth fouls. Slay remained focused and scored in transition to cut the gap to 10. But Williams became the first to foul out for Avellino before Best beat the third-quarter buzzer with a layup to make it 56-65 heading into the fourth quarter.

Brown started the last period with a triple and then a layup in transition as the lead hit 14 again. Best willed his way to a layup, but Fischer answered with a jumper. After a timeout, Avellino bore down and Slay made another three. The visitors tried to slow the game down, but did not manage to score in their half court sets. Avellino also had trouble, yet Porta managed to make it a 10-point game from the line. Fischer and Andrea Crosariol traded baskets and then Crosariol added a hook to make it 66-74. Slay fouled out and Green pushed the lead back to 10. Free throws from Crosariol and Daniele Cinciarini made it 69-76, but time was starting to run out for the hosts. Brown netted a pair from the line and Green scored inside as the visitors sensed the win. Tusek scored from the line and some sloppy play from Maccabi allowed Avellino a chance to get closer, but Tusek fouled Dror Hagag, whose only points of the game practically iced the win and a two-handed slam by Eliyahu ended any doubts.

Head Coaches

MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"We didn’t win against a good Maccabi Tel Aviv. They played well with great intensity – more than us. Eliyahu played great and gave us a lot of problems. Maccabi led the match for all 40 minutes and deserved the victory. Avellino made some mistakes. Now we must think about the Italian League, because we don’t have any chance to advance in the Euroleague."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"This is an important win that gives us a boost. We accomplished what we came to do. We could have played better, but some of our players did not play as planned. But it’s a nice win. We scored 48 points in the first half, which is a pace for 95. However in the second half we played more tactical. We held the ball in the end in order to win and that’s natural. Because some of our players fell into foul trouble and we didn’t have others to play those positions, we needed to slow down."

Players

CROSARIOL, ANDREA
Air Avellino
"We didn’t play a good game We had to win to hope to advance, but we didn’t. Nevertheless I can say that we have played a good Euroleague so far. Carlos Arroyo: “We won a game that we needed to win. I’m very happy because we are able to get to the top 16. Maccabi played as team and this is very important."
GREEN, YANIV
Maccabi Electra
"I’m in good form and getting my chances. I’m glad that I’m able to help out the team. I matured playing in Russia and learned a lot. I know that things take time. I waited for this chance to come and I’m glad that I took advantage. We led for almost the whole game. In the end we built a nice lead and we deserved to win. Congratulations to my teammates."
