THE TAKE

Zalgiris Kaunas hopes to bounce back from its recent road loss in Group A when it hosts Union Olimpija at 19:45 CET on Thursday night. It will not be an easy task, however, as Olimpija (2-5) is arguably the most unconfortable team for Zalgiris (5-2) in the last decade. Olimpija has never lost in Kaunas in its last four tries, and it was only in the home opener between these teams in Ljubljana that Zalgiris broke an eight-game losing streak with a 75-78 road win. Zalgiris has some good news, as Tanoka Beard (9 points, 10 rebounds in one game) is expected back in the lineup after being sidelined for a month due to an ankle injury. He played the big Baltic League game in which Zalgiris topped Lietuvos Rytas over the weekend, but subsequently misses a couple practices. Paulius Jankunas (13.2 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) and Darjus Lavrinovic (15.8 ppg., 6.4 rpg.) have stepped up in Beard's absence, helping Zalgiris to become one of the most pleasant surprises in the competition. Olimpija, with a 2-1 record since Zmago Sagadin returned to coach the team, has its own frontcourt references in Szymon Szewczyk (10.2 ppg.) and Dragisa Drobnjak (4.8 ppg.), while Josko Poljak (62.4% 2FG) helps at the starting center spot and Hasan Rizvic provides a spark off the bench. The matchup between two athletic centers like Lavrinovic and Szewczyk may well be one of the big keys to this game. If Beard is back, top guns Larry Ayuso (12.5 ppg.) and Simonas Serapinas (4.6 ppg.) will probably get more open shots, while up-and-coming forward Jonas Maciulis (5.1 ppg.) will provide his offensive skills off the bench. Olimpija has its own scoring power with Jimmy Oliver (14.7 ppg.) and above all, Yotam Halperin (14.5 ppg., 92.3% FT), who has stepped up as one of the most promising youngsters in the Euroleague. Olimpija has no problems at the point guard spot, as Teemu Rannikko (13.1 ppg., 3.4 apg.) comes off a great game in the Adriatic League, where he scored 38 points Sunday by making 10 of 12 three-pointers. Rannikko has averaged 18 points and 3.5 assists in the last two Euroleague games, also. Recently added Marko Antonijevic and Vedran Morovic, fully recovered from his injury, round out the backcourt. They will face one of the best point guard duos in the competition, Ed Cota (4.8 rpg., 3.5 apg.) and Vidas Ginevicius (5.3 ppg.). Zalgiris leads the Euroleague in defensive and total rebounds, and the fact that Beard is back only adds more power under the glasses. Olimpija will need to slow down the tempo, looking for its perimeter players and stay even on rebounds if it hopes to restore its dominance over Zalgiris and get back in the fight to make it to the Top 16.

A night of thrills in Kaunas, Lithuania ended with the biggest of them all as Ed Cota's three-pointer with 17.9 seconds left lifted Zalgiris to an 80-79 victory over Union Olimpia that left the hosts holding first place alone in Group A. Zalgiris had a tough time all 40 minutes with its nemesis, Union Olimpija, which had won 8 of their previous 9 meetings and went ahead 77-79 on Jimmy Oliver's triple in the final minute. Yotam Halperin took the visitors' one last chance on the final possession, but his game-winning shot attempt fell short. As such, Zalgiris has a 6-2 record and is still atop Group A, while Olimpija fell to 2-6 and is looking at a struggle in 2006 to reach the Top 16. Zalgiris fans had their first thrill when star center Tanoka Beard returned to the lineup. He finished with 11 points in 22 minutes on the floor. Darjus Lavrinovic led the hosts with 19 points, while Reggie Freeman added 14 and Cota picked up 7 assists. Oliver fired in 21 points for Olimpija, Halperin 17 and Teemu Rannikko 10.

Beard was in the Zalgiris starting lineup after missing his last six Euroleague games due to injury. Olimpija's Toni Dijan scored first in the low post and Dragisa Drobnjak followed him under the basket as the visitors went up 0-4. Zalgiris answered with off-the glass jumper by Beard and free throws made from Freeman to tie 4-4. Zalgiris still had problems on defense as another big man, Josko Poljak, scored 5 points in a 0-7 run to push Olimpij ahead 4-11. Beard stepped up with left handed layup, but Teeamu Ranniko nailed bomb from downtown and Halperin added an easy basket to boost the visitors in front, 10-16. Zalgiris put Darjus Lavrinovic on the court and it paid off immediately as he fed Beard with a nice assist for an easy layup. But it was Simonas Serapinas who charged the crowd with a four-points triple-plus-free throw and added another basket for a personal 6-0 run that gave Zalgiris its first lead, 20-19 after 10 minutes.

Zalgiris opened the second quarter with an in-your-face dunk by Darius Silinskis and triple by Lavrinovic, but Olimpija answered with 9 points, all by Halperin and Jimmy Oliver. It was wake-up call for Zalgiris as Jonas Maciulis made 2 points from the line and Lavrinovic added sleek fastbreak dunk to retake the lead at 31-30. Vidas Ginevicius scored from the outside the arc but Olimpija copied him twice with triples by Oliver and Vedran Morovic. Zalgiris turned the ball over a violation by Maciulis, who made up for it with a basket on the next possession to make it 39-40. In the final minute, Drobnjak made free throws and Cota missed his pair as Olimpija took a 39-42 halftime lead to the lockers.

Larry Ayuso fed Beard for an easy layup early in the third quarter but Olimpija answered with a 5-0 run capped by Halperin's three-point play. Freeman copied him, however, to keep the Zalgiris offense going until Ayuso could launch the triple that tied it 47-47. Zalgiris's man-to-man defense was working well as Olimpija couldn't get through for a few minutes, until Oliver made a shot from downtown and Halperin added basket in the fastbreak to put the guests ahead, 50-52. Lavrinovic and Ginevicius answered with 4 free throws but Zalgiris paid for leaving Oliver open for a triple. Zalgiris found its go-to guy in Lavrinovic, who bombed from downtown and controlled the boards on defense. Still, Halperin was able with free throws to forge 59-59 tie after 30 minutes.

Paulius Jankunas scored first 4 points for Zalgiris in the fourth quarter but Olimpija dominated in the paint as Drobjnak made a three-point play and Hasan Rizvic faked to score an easy basket. Zalgiris seemed sloppy on offense as only individual efforts - a drive by Freeman and a reverse layup by Jankunas - kept the hosts alive. Drobjnak picked his fifth foul and that gave some extra space for Lavrinovic, who penetrated to tie 69-69. Both teams made mistakes until Freeman buried a crucial three-pointer to push hosts ahead 73-75. But that only assured more drama. Olimpija answered with free throws by Ranniko and triple from the right corner by Halperin. Lavrinovic stepped up with a three-point play to make it 77-76 for hosts but Olimpija didn't gave up and found Oliver, whose three-pointer gave the visitors a 77-79 lead with 20 seconds to go. In the end, however, the match belonged to Cota, who drilled a triple off the dribble to seal a tough victory for Zalgiris, 80-79.

Head Coaches

SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Zalgiris
"We used to win here in Sporto Hale before and everyone here expected a victory tonight. We gave a Christmas present to our fans but we were close to lose the game. It was a very tough game, we didn't play like we had to play. We didn't set the last shot for Ed Cota. He didn't perform well tonight and maybe he felt about that shot in the right way and he made it. He is an experienced player. He made that shot and he sealed the victory. We played without Tanoka Beard for a very long time and players needs to understand each other."
SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Union Olimpija
"It was a very good game. I think both teams were on the same level tonight. In my own opinion we controlled most of the game but had bad luck at the end. It was one shot that decided the winner. Zalgiris made that shot, we didn't."

Players

LAVRINOVIC, DARJUS
Zalgiris
"I am very happy with the win. At the end we were in a tough spot but Ed Cota stepped up with two crutial shots and we made it through. During the last timeout coach told us to push the ball for the open shot but he didn't told who exactly have to take the opportunity for the last shot. I have no problems to come off the bench when Beard is in the starting five. What really matters to me is that head coach trusts me and I will do my best in every situation. I hope we will win more games in the Euroleague. It won't be easy to find motivation to win more games but we don't want to dissapoint our fans and I believe we won't."
JANKUNAS, PAULIUS
Zalgiris
"We had a really tough end of the match. When Oliver hit a few extra long distance shots at the end it seemed tough to make it for a good ending but we came through in the clutch. We played like a team and step by step we achieved the victory. Now we are emotionally charged but we need to chill out and watch the the game one more time to make some conclusions."
HALPERIN, YOTAM
Union Olimpija
"We are very dissapointed. We were leading most of the game. We played versus a very good team and we lost. We have many games ahead and it's certainly not the end of the era. I don't think we should have lost this game. I think we played better. Ed Cota made two big shots at the end of the game and it was a key. Coach told us don't let an open shots but Cota was dribbling and made a good shot."
OLIVER, JIMMY
Union Olimpija
"We had put ourselves to a good situation to winning the end. Unfortunatly Zalgiris executed a few good plays at the end and they won it. Our plan wasn't too keep the game so close, we wanted to keep the crowd out of it. We did a good job but just missed our luck tonight. I talked with the coach about my role in the team and I have no problems with starting off the bench."
