THE TAKE

Euroleague runner-up Maccabi Electra resumes its run to return to the Final Four when it hosts Alba Berlin in the teams’ Group F opener on Thursday at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. Both teams will have new players in uniform after Maccabi inked Dee Brown and Charles Gaines this week, while Alba added big man Kenny Adelke. Maccabi went 4-1 over the second half of the season, picking up momentum heading into the Top 16. Meanwhile Berlin picked up a crucial Week 9 win at DKV Joventut that helped propel the team into the Top 16. The game features a contrast in styles as Maccabi likes to run and use its scoring prowess at every chance, while Berlin plays a slower, more deliberate style. An interesting matchup will take place at power forward, where Maccabi’s Lior Eliyahu, the December MVP, will face Ansu Sesay, one of the few players in the competition that can match him for speed and size. Eliyahu teams with D’Or Fischer, Yaniv Green and now Gaines in making up Maccabi’s frontcourt, which will go against Berlin’s combination of Adam Chubb, Sesay, Adelke and sixth man Aleksandar Nadjfeji. In the backcourt, Berlin turns to Steffen Hamann, Julius Jenkins and Rashad Wright to share ball-handling duties, while Casey Jacobsen and Immanuel McElroy bring firepower from the wings. Carlos Arroyo is Maccabi’s star playmaker, starting alongside Marcus Brown at shooting guard with Dee Brown now available to spell them. Omri Casspi, Tre Simmons and Tal Burstein are head coach Pini Gershon’s options at small forward. Berlin has yet to score 80 points in any game this season, a feat Maccabi has accomplished six times – four of them in the last five games. Even though Berlin has a number of offensive-minded players that have the ability to run and score with Maccabi, none of them have been in a position to do so over 40 minutes. How the visitors respond to that challenge could determine how the game plays out. Nevertheless, Maccabi remains the favorite to win at home, where it has gone 44-6 over its last 50 Euroleague home games.

GAME NOTES

Maccabi Electra
  • Guard Marcus Brown and forward Lior Eliyahu are both on a streak of six straight games with double-figures in points.
  • Guard Tal Burstein is closing in on 1,000 points for his Euroleague Basketball career. He enters this week’s game against Alba Berlin with 989 points in 134 career games. He also needs just 2 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.
  • Big man D’Or Fischer has recorded 10 rebounds in each of his last three Euroleague appearances.
  • The last game between Maccabi and Alba took place in December 2001, when Maccabi won in Berlin 64-65. Derrick Sharp and Tal Burstein are the only players on either team who played in that game.
Alba Berlin
  • Newly signed big man Kenny Adelke could make his Euroleague debut on Thursday at Maccabi Electra.
  • Adelke spent his first season as a professional in Israel playing for Hapoel Galil Elyon, where he was a teammate of current Maccabi player Tre Simmons.
  • Alba has just a single win in its entire history over Maccabi. It took place in its debut Euroleague season, more than 12 years ago, with a 70-65 win in Berlin.
  • Guard Immanuel McElroy has scored in double-digits in the last five games.
  • Alba had the fewest offensive rebounds in the Euroleague among the teams that qualified for the Top 16.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"The first game of the Top 16 is a very important game, and we have to win it, especially in front of our own fans. We have more to lose them Alba in this game, but I believe we arrive in good shape. Considering that two players joined us this week, we had good preparations, and I hope that we'll be able to minimize our weaknesses and play better than in our last Euroleague game. We don't need to care about Alba, but about us and how to play in our style, and get the win."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"I think that for us, it’s a great privilege to compete in the Top 16. To bring these big names to Berlin was what we were aiming for. Of course, we have to realize that we are the underdog in this group. Basically the role that has been given to us is to influence which of the three other teams advances to the next round. But we don't want to be pressured about what our role in the group is and whether we can make a certain difference. If we start looking into the future that way, then we wouldn't have anything to look for in this group. Therefore we have to approach the Top 16 games in a different way: All our opponents are excellent, but we are looking for a way to play each game for a win. We will see, how far that will get us. Bringing in additional players like Dee Brown and Charles Gaines makes obvious that Maccabi's ambition, like always, is to fight for the European title. Of course, we have to adjust to that, but basically I don't think that the new players will change their game much. They have a certain way of playing, they will try to adjust the new players as soon as possible and will try to play the game with them according to the way they play."

"The fans here are something unbelievable. I promise to fight for them each and every game. It was a good night for us, I felt great to be out there on the court with my new teammates. The coaches gave me confidence and I tried to do my best in the minutes I got."
BURSTEIN, TAL
Maccabi Electra
"It's a very important game. In the Top 16 every game, every possession and every point counts, and we need to be aware of that from the tip-off. If we want to make it to the Quarterfinals, we can't allow ourselves to drop this game. Alba showed in the Regular Season that they have the ability to give a fight to any team, and we have to be alert so we don't get in trouble."
McELROY, IMMANUEL
Alba Berlin
"Making it to the Top 16 is like a privilege for us and we are very happy because of that. But our work is not done. We have a big task ahead of us. Maccabi is a great team and more than ever we have to be focused and have to avoid mistakes. Everybody says, that Alba is the big outsider in this group. I don't know if that's true or not. What I know is that we have a good group of players, who believe in each other. Now we must go out there and prove it, not to anybody else, but to ourselves. We have to go out there as a team, as a family, be patient and play our game, that's our only chance against a strong opponent like Maccabi."
DOr Fischer - Maccabi ElectraMaccabi Electra Tel Aviv opened its Top 16 Group F play with a comfortable 96-65 victory at home over Alba Berlin on Thursday. The 2008 Euroleague finalist from Maccabi allowed just 22 points in the second and third quarters as Top 16 debutant Berlin was clearly over-matched, especially in the paint. Maccabi out-rebounded Berlin 39-22 and hit 70% of its two-point shots. Maccabi used runs of 8-0 in the first quarter and 10-0 in the second to gain control of the game before just over-powering Berlin the rest of the way. Lior Eliyahu led all scorers with 22 points while grabbing 8 rebounds. D'Or Fischer added 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks while Omri Casspi had 12 points. New acquisition Dee Brown scored 11 points in his Euroleague debut and veteran Marcus Brown had 11 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Carlos Arroyo tallied 8 points and 10 assists for Maccabi. Immanuel McElroy hit for 17 points to lead Berlin while Ansu Sesay scored 15 and Julius Jenkins 14. Besides McElroy's production, the rest of Berlin's starting five collected just 15 points combined.

Ansu Sesay - Alba Berlin Fischer opened the scoring for the hosts with a jumper from the right side. Berlin's first basket came from Casey Jacobsen from long range and Sesay followed suit from beyond the arc to push the Berlin lead to 2-6. Sesay would hit a three-pointer from the top of the key as the German side led 4-9. Arroyo finally got on the scoring board with a jumper and Eliyahu and Fischer both converted inside baskets in an 8-0 run for a 12-9 lead and a Berlin time-out. Steffen Hamann came out of the break with a layup to stop the Maccabi run. But Eliyahu and Arroyo combined for three foul shots to push the margin to 15-11. Jenkins came off the bench to hit two free throws and then drove the length of the court to even the game at 15-15. Maccabi, however, was quicker back in transition with Casspi hammering down a dunk. The speed of the game continued to be pretty frantic with McElroy evening the game again at 17-17 only to have Casspi hit in transition again. Another Casspi lay-in was followed by two Eliyahu free throws for a 23-17 advantage for the hosts. Jenkins was left wide open and nailed a three-point shot to cut the deficit to three points. Fischer, however, put back an offensive rebound and Casspi made two free throws - for 10 points in the first period - as Maccabi was leading 27-20 after one quarter.

Aleksandar Nadjfeji started the second period by kissing a layup off the glass to make it 27-22. But Maccabi picked up its defense to shut down the guests. Arroyo's tough jumper started a big Maccabi run. Marcus Brown found some room inside and Arroyo nailed a jumper from the baseline to push the lead into double digits - 33-22. Brown again hit inside and Berlin called a timeout. Marcus Brown and Eliyahu hit layups on either side of the Berlin time-out to complete the 10-0 run for a 37-22 advantage. Sesay's basket stopped the run as Berlin finally scored again after six consecutive scoreless possessions, including four turnovers. New acquisition Dee Brown, however, came off the bench and nailed a three-point shot to push the gap to 40-24. Sesay's two foul shots and Jenkins's running jumper made it 40-28. It was 42-30 when Dee Brown knocked down another triple from the opposite left wing. Fischer followed that basket with a beautiful alley-oop dunk from a Dee Brown pass and then Dee Brown picked up an easy break-away layup after a Berlin turnover as Maccabi cruised ahead 49-30. Jenkins did finish the second quarter with a mid-range jumper as Maccabi led 49-32 at the break.

Lior Eliyahu - Maccabi ElectraMarcus Brown started the second half with a three-pointer as the lead reached 20 points for the first time - 52-32. And a Fischer tip-in made it 54-32. Berlin failed to convert on its first five possessions of the second half before Sesay dropped a triple. But Casspi threw down a thunderous dunk in transition after a great pass by Arroyo. And Fischer's two foul shots pushed the margin to 58-35. Berlin tried everything it could to get back into the game with Sesay making two foul shots and McElroy nailing a triple to cut the margin to 60-40. But the combination of Yaniv Green and Eliyahu was too much for Berlin as they scored all eight points in an 8-2 run to finish the third period, including Arroyo continuing his fine passing game with a fine pass to Green for an easy layup. Maccabi led 68-42 after three periods.

Green's free throw opened the scoring in the final quarter. Rashad Wright fought in a reverse layup for Berlin but Dee Brown answered right back at the other end with another three-pointer to make it 72-44. Berlin tried to muster one more fun and Wright, Jenkins and Dragan Dojcin all nailed three-point shots as the lead was cut to 74-53. Eliyahu proved way too much for Berlin though, scoring eight straight points for Maccabi, which remained ahead 82-57. McElroy refused to give up, scoring two straight baskets for Berlin, which trailed 82-59 as it was trying to cut into the point differential for later in the Top 16. Fischer, however, completed a three-point play and then knocked down a turn-around jumper. Then Tre Simmons entered the game and got his circus shot to fall and completed the three-point play as the lead grew to 31 points 92-61. And that would be the final difference as Eliyahu's basket finished the scoring 96-65.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"I'm happy with this team, but we still have things to improve. My job is to see the things to improve even in nights like this. Dee Brown has been here for three days and doesn't know the plays, but he played 18 minutes and he did a very good job and that gave us a big bonus. The fact we had a chance to use him so much was good. We received 65 points and it seemed like we didn't play good defense. It was very important for us to win this game, and we didn't know what to expect because on the opening night of the Top 16, there's a lot of pressure on the home team. But we got the win and look forward now to the next game."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"We had a bad loss, and we knew it could happen in such a tough group. We didn't do what we should have done in the transition defense, and that allowed Maccabi to score many points off turnovers and missed shots, and that's something that gave us a lot of problems. We still have a long road."

Players

ARROYO, CARLOS
Maccabi Electra
"Dee Brown is a great fit for the team. He's playing tough and adds a lot of energy. That's exactly what we're looking for. We had a season of ups and downs so far, but tonight everybody had a chance to see what kind of team Maccabi can be."
CASSPI, OMRI
Maccabi Electra
"On their home court Alba will give a headache to all the teams, but tonight we managed to get a big win. We have a series of tough road games ahead of us now. If we win one of them, our spot in the next stage will be much closer."
McELROY, IMMANUEL
Alba Berlin
"Maccabi is a good team. We are also a good team, but today they were better. We need to forget about this game and start thinking about the next one and how to win it. Today the difference between us was this big, but in the next game anything can happen."
