THE TAKE

Elan Chalon finds itself in a good spot as it welcomes undefeated Group B leader Besiktas Cola Turka to France. Despite losing at Ventspils last week to drop its record to 2-2, coach Gregor Beugnot's team is 1-0 at home and has already collected an away victory. Chalon committed just six turnovers but just couldn't buy an inside basket against the Latvians (39% inside the arc). Center John Ford had a solid game with 13 points and small forward Bryan Bracey led Elan with 14 points off the bench. But the main problem for Beugnot's team was its perimeter defense as Ventspils made 12-of-27 (44%) from downtown - especially dangerous were Aigars Vitols and Jimmy Baxter who made 9-of-12. Beugnot must find a way to stop Besiktas playmaker Christian Dalmau if it hopes to move to 3-2. Dalmau had a historic performance last week in leading Besiktas to a comfortable home victory over Ovarense Aerosoles, collecting 24 points and 14 assists. The 14 assists tied a ULEB Cup record, also done by Roko-Leni Ukic for Split Croatia in January 2004. Even though he's averaging 14.3 points a game, Dalmau is also the third-best assist man in the ULEB Cup this season (6.0 apg), mainly because of the number of weapons he has to work with. Small forward Preston Shumpert is the team's leading scorer with 17 ppg while center Sandro Nicevic hits for 14 points a game and power forward Kaya Peker scores at a 12.8 ppg clip. Shooting guard Rick Apodaca is also averaging 10.8 points in three starts. With his bench struggling to produce much scoring, Coach Ergin Ataman replaced Apodaca in the starting five against Ovarense with guard Sinan Guler, who responded with 12 points. With Apodaca running the second unit, the bench scored 22 points with Apodaca collecting four points, three assists and two steals. If Besiktas can get solid production from its bench, a perfect 5-0 start looks realistic.

Besiktas Cola Turka improved to 5-0 atop Group B with a well-earned 64-73 victory on the road against Elan Chalon. Sinan Guler collected 20 points and 9 rebounds while Kaya Peker had 19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals for Besiktas, which gained control of the game in the second quarter and never let Chalon threaten. Preston Shumpert chipped in 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists for Cola Turka, and Christian Dalmau had 9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Chalon dropped to 2-3 in Group B despite 15 points and 12 rebounds by John Ford, who struggled with just 5-of-17 shooting from the field. Joachim Ekanga added 12 points and Xavier Corosine scored 10 points. Besiktas attempts to improve to 6-0 next week at home against BK Ventspils while Chalon hopes to even its record by hosting Köln 99ers.

Moussa Badiane put the hosts on the board first and Chalon led 6-4 on Ford's early basket. But Dalmau and Guler each scored 4 points in a 0-10 surge for a 6-14 lead. Baskets by Rowan Barrett and Ekanga pulled Elan to within 11-14 only to see Shumpert and Guler score in the final minute to give Besiktas a 13-21 advantage after one period. Ford opened the scoring in the second and Ekanga's three-ball made it 20-23. Besiktas answered right back as back-to-back baskets by Sandro Nicevic started a 0-9 run to make it a 12-point game again. Guler's score pushed the cushion to 25-39 and Besiktas was leading 29-41 at the break. Ford's foul shot began the second half before Dalmau's long ball gave the guests a 32-48 advantage midway through the third. Already ahead 36-50, Guler's three-pointer completed a 2-9 surge to push the lead to 21 points - 38-59. And Barrett's three-ball trimmed the gap to 45-59 going into the fourth period. Besiktas did not let Chalon start well in the fourth, as Peker and Guler combined to score the first nine points of the period - building a 45-68 advantage. Chalon attempted to come back and Corosine's three-pointer made it 55-70 with four minutes left. Cevher Ozer answered with a three-ball of his own, but the hosts continued their surge. Corosine knocked down another long ball and Abdelmajid Naji scored to cut the deficit to 64-73 in the final minute. But Chalon had much too little too late.
