THE TAKE

Ovarense Aerosoles has one final chance to give its home fans a ULEB Cup victory as it hopes to upset the only remaining undefeated team Besiktas Cola Turka in Group B action. Coach Mario Leite's Ovarense dropped to 0-8 on the season by losing at Elan Chalon. The Portuguese side shot just 35% from the floor and forced just 9 Chalon turnovers in the defeat. Playmaker Cordell Henry collected in 25 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists while shooting guard Ben Reed poured in 22 points in a wasted effort. Leite's team has averaged a losing margin of 16 points. Aerosoles lost by 26 points at Besiktas in Week Four as it shot 39% and committed 24 turnovers. If it comes anywhere near those numbers, Ovarense will have no chance of grabbing victory number one. Besiktas meanwhile has already clinched first place in Group B. But coach Ergin Ataman's team nearly dropped its first game last week, winning by one point at home against FMP to remain the ULEB Cup's only undefeated side at 8-0. The Turkish club shot just 40% from the floor and was out-rebounded 37-30, but it also forced 21 FMP turnovers to decide the game. Shooting guard Preston Shumpert gathered 27 points and 6 rebounds while power forward Kaya Peker added 15 points and center Sandro Nicevic chipped in 10 points. And it was just enough against FMP. Ataman's troops would like to remain undefeated just as much as Ovarense wants to win its first game. And unless Aerosoles play the game of its life, this one should be victory number nine for Besiktas.

Kaya Peker collected a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds while making 11 of 12 two-point shots as already-advanced Besiktas Cola Turka defeated Aerosoles Ovarense 80-94 on the road in Portugal on Tuesday. Besiktas not only has clinched first place in Group B with a 9-0 record but is the only undefeated team in the competition and therefore can finish with the best overall record among 54 teams. Ovarense is still winless at 0-9. Five other players scored in double figure for Besiktas: Preston Shumpert had 15 points, Christian Dalmau and Sandro Nicevic 14 apiece, Rick Apodaca drilled 11 and Erkan Veyseloglu 10. Cordell Henry led the way for Ovarense with 16 points, Nuno Cortez netted 14, Ben Reed 13, Elvis Evora contributed with 12 and Gregory Stempin with 10.

Besiktas started the game strong, taking a double-digit cushion already, 9-19, on a two-pointer by Peker at the midway point of the first quarter. Cordell Henry capped an amazing response by Ovarense, an 11-2 run to climb within 20-21 late in the quarter before Peker and Shumpert let Besiktas finish it 21-25. Veyseloglu nailed 5 points in a row giving a 26-29 margin to Besiktas early in the second quarter, before Miguel Miranda scored from beyond the arc to make it 34-37. He was copied by Evora for a 38-39 score with 2 minutes left to halftime. Mehmet Yagmur pushed the visitors up again at 38-43, but few seconds later the first advantage for Ovarense arrived, 44-43, thanks to Fernando Neves shooting from the arc. Still, by halftime, Besiktas was in front again 44-49. The Turkish team extended the cushion to 47-56 with a three-pointer from Dalmau, but the hosts reacted again to be back within 62-65 when Henry posted mail from beyond the arc. Besiktas rejected any further climb by Ovarense as Veyseloglu fixed the scoreboard at 65-72 after 30 minutes. Cever Ozher pushed Besiktas to get another double-digit margin, 68-78 early in the last quarter. Nuno Cortez answered to make it 70-78, but then the visitors sparked a 2-13 run to close the game definitively.
