THE TAKE

PAOK and Estudiantes face off on Tuesday in what should be on of Week 5’s most intense matchups. With Benetton already in the Last 16 in Group F and Chorale Roanne eliminated, PAOK and Estudiantes will battle it out, both with current 2-2 records , to dictate who joins the Italian team in the second round. A victory suffices for Estudiantes, but PAOK needs to win by at least 12 points to qualify. The Greek side did not come close in their previous matchup, as the Spanish representatives beat them by 11 points thanks to 16 by Pancho Jasen and 13 and 7 rebounds by Nik Caner-Medley in Week 1. PAOK comes from eliminating Roanne, mainly because of the strong inside presence of Lazaros Papadopoulos, as they won the key rebounding battle 36-27. Rawle Marshall led them with 19 points and 6 rebounds, while Justin Gray netted 17 and Papadopoulos scored 13 and grabbed 11 boards. Towering Josh Asselin will have the task of matching up against the powerful Papadopoulos in the paint, and he did net 12 points in the opener, though the Greek center doubled him with 24 plus17 rebounds. But the big man’s Achiles heel is free throw shooting, as he missed 8 attempts, so PAOK should have other options like Todor Gecevski or Roberto Dozier on hand in case of a tight game, while Estudiantes most skilled low post scorer is German Gabriel. Donnie McGrath is another weapon for the hosts at the guard position, as is Gray, while Estudiantes will try to counter with Jayson Granger, Tyronne Ellis and the high scoring Jasen on the perimeter.

Quotes Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, ANASTASIOS
PAOK BC
"It’s an important home game, against a very good team. Estudiantes is playing for the Spanish League, which is the best European League at the moment and that says a lot about their dynamics. They are a tough team to beat, because they have many different styles of play which they can act on at any time in the game and apart from very good guards, they also transfer the game inside with great success. We need to focus on stopping their rhythm and their ability to score easy baskets and then we’ll have a good chance at winning. And that’s we want above all, to try and win the game, we are not focusing on the difference or anything like that, we want to play a good game and if a positive result comes out of it, then all the better."

"It’s a very important home game, and we know that it’s our chance to take a step forward in the Eurocup if we win it. We have been preparing for it for a while and we need our fans to come and support us. We have just seen the video from the game in Madrid and we know that we have to play much better defense if we want to win. We need to stop their fast breaks. We don’t focus on the difference, we’ll try to play hard and see what we can do about in the last 2-3 minutes of the game. We just want to get a victory first of all and try for qualification until the last day. I think that the possibility of continuing in the Eurocup is a great motivation of us and the club."
Lazaros Papadopoulos - PAOK BCPAOK defeated Asefa Estudiantes 77-72 on Tuesday, keeping the Last 16 opportunities for both teams heading into Week 6. An Estudiantes win in Thessaloniki would have landed the visitors a ticket to the next round, and the hosts needed a 12-point victory to seal their passport from Group F, but neither result was netted. PAOK improved to 3-2 and controls its destiny. It will move on to the Last 16 with a win, but travels to Benetton next week. Estudiantes will have to try to beat Chorale Roanne and hope for PAOK to lose in Treviso. Rawle Marshall scored 18 points and Lazaros Papadopoulos posted 13 plus 11 boards to lead PAOK. Donnie McGrath netted 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc and Robert Dozier and Justin Gray added 11 apiece, with 8 boards for Dozier. Estudiantes, which fell to 2-3, was paced by Daniel Clark with 16 points. German Gabriel added 13 and Jayson Granger had 10.

Estudiantes started things with a dunk by Granger and Josh Asselin added three baskets to make it 3-10. PAOK was able to hang in by crashing the boards and getting to the line, as 6 of the hosts’ first 12 points came on free throws. An 11-0 PAOK run capped by a Papadopoulos layup gave the home side a 14-10 lead. Granger responded by scoring on a driving layup to tie it at 17-17, though Dozier, Todor Gecevski and Papadopoulos established their inside power, as they all scored to finish off the first quarter with a 23-19 advantage for the hosts. A McGrath three-pointer at the start of second quarter gave PAOK its biggest lead of the game at 28-19, but Clark answered for Estudiantes with a long bomb of his own and Gabriel converted a three-point play to get the visitors within 3 again. While the visitors played aggressive defense and totaled 6 steals in the half, both teams seemed to run away from the inside game that dominated the first quarter, settling for triples. And deep shots by Giorgios Dedas and Gray made it 40-29 at halftime.

Granger and Marshall traded layups to start the second half, but PAOK quickly stretched the margin to double digits on another triple from McGrath. It was all Granger and Clark for Estudiantes, as they combined to score 13 of the team’s 27 total points in the third quarter. Pancho Jasen and Gabriel were finally able to get going by the end of the period, as Estudiantes mustered a 2-12 run that cut the deficit to 57-56 with 10 minutes left to play after Clark rattled the rim with a dunk. Marshall came out of the gate firing after the break and his triple gave PAOK some breathing room, while Estudiantes kept relying on Marshall’s hot hand to stay close. McGrath hit from beyond the arc again and PAOK suddenly were in position to think about winning by 12 for Last 16 qualification after Gecevski’s jumper made it 66-58. But Gabriel decided then to show his range from beyond the arc, and the big man converted on two consecutive attempts to make it a 1-point game once more. Gecevski shot back with his own long-range bomb to make it 70-66 with four minutes to play. Consecutive layups by Nik Caner-Medley and Albert Oliver tightened the score again at 72-70, but PAOK’s big men took care of business from the free throw line in the last minute and sealed the home win.

Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, ANASTASIOS
PAOK BC
"We played against a very good team that has great depth in its roster and plays very good with the big guys inside and outside the basket. We have a problem playing against big players that shoot the ball well outside the perimeter, or even just one step inside of it. We tried to fix the mistakes we made on this part of the game in the second half, but they moved even further from the line and as the time passed, the effort of our players became more stressed due to them going after the difference instead of just going for the victory. However, I think we played very well and we got a fair victory. Now we have to focus on the game against Maroussi on Saturday and right after that it's the game against Benetton that will decide everything."
PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"We played very bad defense in the first half and although we toughened up in the second half and we used all necessary strategies to recover from the point difference PAOK had built, we did not manage to win the game. I cannot be happy from the result, but the difference is still in our favor and everything will depend on Benetton next week, should we beat Roanne as we believe we can do."

Players

GRAY, JUSTIN
PAOK BC
"First of all, I have to say that we really enjoyed the energy in the gym, our fans have been great, they knew it was a very important game for us and they came to support us and helped a lot in terms of getting the victory. We tried to cover the difference, which was very tough to do, but I believe we did our job and we need to win one more game to advance. And we all believe we can do it."
CLARK, DANIEL
Asefa Estudiantes
"We had a very bad start, we lacked intensity and we did not play hard enough, which allowed PAOK to take a big advantage over us. We did a tough job to recover in the second half, but we did not take the extra step needed to get the victory."
