THE TAKE

Spirou Basket Charleroi hosts Bizkaia Bilbao Basket in both teams’ opening game of Eurocup regular season play in Group E. Both teams have been tested in European competition this season. Spirou played in the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, falling to eventual qualifier Entente Orleanaise, while Bilbao had to overcome an 8-point deficit in the second leg of the Eurocup Qualifying Round versus BC Donetsk to even get this far. Bilbao enjoys a wealth of talent to rely on in its backcourt. Janis Blums, Javi Salgado and Renaldas Seibutis return for their second campaign with the team after averaging almost 10 points apiece in last year’s Eurocup, while Javi Rodriguez and Paco Vazquez’s six seasons of European competition give Bilbao multiple options on the exterior. The home side will look to offset Bilbao’s guard corps with a slew of outside scorers. Spirou is without its top gun, point guard Jerry Johnson who has a knee injury. Accordingly, Justin Hamilton, Nick Jacobson and Jonathan Tabu will have to shoulder more of the load against Bilbao. The visitors’ main weapon and leader in his fourth season with the team is forward Marko Banic, who poured in 28 points in Game 2 against Donetsk to qualify his team. In the off-season, Bilbao added Real Madrid veteran Alex Mumbru and brought in two more proven scorers at forward, Chris Warren and Robert Conley. Spirou must answer through Dwayne Broyles and Wes Wilkinson. In the low post, Spirou’s Len Matela, Jure Lalic and veteran shot-blocker Andre Riddick will go up against Tomas Hampl, Salva Guardia and the newly acquired Jerome Moiso, who won the ULEB Cup in 2008 with DKV Joventut. Look for Hamilton to be the barometer for Spirou. If he can step up and make up for Johnson’s absence, while staying fresh for the fourth quarter, Spirou becomes the favorite at home. But if Bilbao’s depth can crack the Belgian champs, the visitors can target an important road win.

SALGADO, JAVI
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"Last year we already won here in Charleroi, but that doesn't mean that we can face this game in a relaxed manner. We caught them by surprise last year and that allowed us to win easy, but in the game at home we suffered a lot more. Right now we are not in our best moment, but we are looking forward to the Eurocup so it gives us a chance to play forgetting about the Spanish League so we can find our better selves and be back on the right track soon."
Renaldas Seibutis - Bilbao Basket (Photo: Bilbao Basket)A Eurocup semifinalist from a year ago, Bilbao Basket, got off on the right foot again with a solid 67-80 road win at Spirou Basket in Charleroi, Belgium on Tuesday in the Group E opener for both teams. Bilbao had dashed Spirou's hopes of a Final Eight berth last spring, and did it again Tuesday by breaking open a close game in the second half. A 3-12 run after the break gave the visitors plenty to work with, and their defense did the rest on the way to the good-as-gold road victory. Marko Banic led the winners with 17 points on perfect 8-for-8 two-point shooting. Alex Mumbru followed with 13 points, Salva Guardia with 12 and Javi Salgado with 10 for Bilbao. For Spirou, Jonathan Tabu was the big gun with 22 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Wes Wilkinson followed with 13 points and Dwayne Broyles added 11. Depth was the key in the end as Bilbao enjoyed a 13-34 advantage in bench scoring.

Tabu and Wilkinson got the home crowd in Charlerloi pumped with a pair of three-pointers on Spirou's first offensive possessions. Bilbao was able to match that and take the lead, however, on Markota's second layup at 6-8. The back-and-forth trend was set as Dwayne Broyles drove and Wilkonson hit from deep to put Spirou back on top at 14-10, only to see Mumbru take the lead back for Bilbao, 14-15, on a triple. His next layup tied it before another by Salva Guardia left Bilbao in front 17-19 after 10 minutes. Ties and three-pointers - by Javi Salgado and Paco Vazquez for Bilbao, Nick Jacobson for Spirou - marked the second quarter as Bilbao marched ahead by as much as 24-31. Spirou screwed down its defense then, allowing only free throws as Tabu and Len Matela filled a 9-3 run to get the hosts within 33-34. Bilbao's had little time to respond, but used a late layup by Marko Banic to stay ahead 35-39 at the break.

Bilbao made its move after the break as the scoring column was joined by Jerome Moiso inside and Robert Conley from the arc to boost the difference to 35-44. Tabu gave Spirou a respite from long-range, but Conley continued unstopped until he had given Bilbao the game's first double-digit lead, 38-50. Broyles and Wilkinson responded for the hosts, leading another 9-3 run to get within 47-53. Markota and Mumbru stepped up then for Bilbao, steadying the ship so that the visitors led by 49-59 after 30 minutes. Broyles and Wilkinson chipped away at the lead, but the Bilbao defense reasserted itself now while Guardia drilled a triple and Banic took over inside. His third layup in as many minutes made it a 59-74 scoreboard with 3 minutes left, assuring Bilbao would take home a valuable road win in Group E.

Head Coaches

BOZZI, GIOVANNI
Spirou Basket
"Except some turnovers, I was satisfied by our first half. After that, we were in problem with the screens and pick ‘n rolls. Offensively, we've tried to play inside, with Riddick mostly, but without success. Globally, we took too many outside shots, 50 percent exactly, and we should have one rotation more to get a chance to win tonight. We must be realistic: Bilbao is stronger than us."
VIDORRETA, TXUS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"We won the four quarters, that means we were regular, in defense mainly and it was the most important tonight. Like last year against Charleroi, we used the pick ‘n roll. We worked for that during last week and we put it into a concrete form in the second half. It’s an important win for us."
