THE TAKE

A decisive Group L contest will take place in the Serbian capital on Tuesday when Crvena Zvezda Belgrade hosts CEZ Nymburk. Crvena Zvezda suffered its first loss of the Last 16 last week, but still leads Group L with a 3-1 record. Head coach Aleksandar Trifunovics men will advance to the Quarterfinals with a win over Nymburk. Meanwhile Nymburk will be mathematically eliminated from reaching the Quarterfinals if it loses and Gran Canaria 2014 beats Turk Telekom in Tuesdays other Group L fixture. Accordingly the pressure will be high when the teams take the floor. Crvena Zvezda registered a 60-65 road win in the Czech Republic when these teams met in January. Mike Taylor was the hero with 19 points for the winners. Nymburk, which is 2-2 thus far in the Last 16, is coming off a 79-71 win over Gran Canaria 2014 in which its backcourt came up big. Point guard Arthur Lee scored 19 points and Ladislav Sokolovsky and Mike Lenzly combined for 30 points and numerous big shots in what was a must-win game. The pressure remains on the Nymburk guards on the road this time. Ron Lewis is another important member of the Nymburk guard corps that will face a talented crew from Crvena Zvezda that includes Taylor, Filip Videnov and Vuk Radivojevic. The hosts boast the bigger frontline, with Oliver Stevic who is coming off a career-best 18-point, 7-steal effort last week Vladimir Stimac, Elemdin Kikanovic and Marko Keselj looking to overpower Phil Ricci, Petr Benda, Georgios Tsiaras and Radek Necas. At small forward, Sokolovsky faces a pivotal duel against rising star Nemanja Bjelica. Last weeks loss was Crvena Zvezdas first at home all season and the club will be focused on not letting that happen again. On the other hand, head coach Muli Katzurins men have already won twice on the road this season and will be ready for the atmosphere in Belgrade. The key to the game could come down to shooting. While Crvena Zvezda ranks second in the Last 16 in two-point shooting at 60.5%, Nymburk is dead last (42.1%). Nymburk must improve that number and play tough defense to force Crvena Zvezda to miss to maximize its chances. If the hosts are able to use their size advantage to score without trouble, they should punch their Quarterfinals tickets by the end of the night.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Crvena Zvezda
"We have three wins in this Last 16, but now comes a team that has demonstrated its ambition and they keep signing new players such as Tsiaras at power forward. They have established their name in Europe and every year they take a step forward in the right direction. Their main players are not Czech, but we cannot forget about Benda or Sokolovsky, also good contributors to the team. There is no point in talking about the importance of this duel, I know that the fans will come to the Pionir to support us in this key game. Bakic has been two weeks out of the courts and Videnov also had problems, but I trust that they will be ready to play against Nymburk. We will have to work on our rotation because those are not the only problems we have right now."
KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"Like always it is not easy to play in Belgrade. For both teams it is an important game and Crvena Zvezda, when they play at home, they are favorites. But we proved many times before that we are not giving up any opportunity and we will do our best to succeed in this key game. I think that Crvena Zvezda is a bit more under the pressure since they play on home court."

"Crvena Zvezda is having great results this Eurocup season. The strenghts of their team are even doubled when they play on the homecourt. They play great defense and we have to find the way how to overcome it. We were in similar situation against Crvena Zvezda two seasons ago and everybody remembers that altought they were strong at home we beat them with high difference that time. I think this can help us mentally."
Petr Benda - CEZ NymburkCEZ Basketball Nymburk forced a three-way tie and plenty of drama into Group L with a stunning 55-73 road win over Crvena Zvezda Belgrade at Pionir Hall in the Serbian capital on Tuesday. The Czech champs outscored Crvena Zvezda 22-38 in the second half to register their second road win of the Last 16 and third of the season. Nymburk improved to 3-2, dropped Crvena Zvezda to the same record and they join Gran Canaria 2014 in a three-way tie for first place heading into the Last 16 finale. Nymburk will advance to the Quarterfinals if it wins at home next week against Turk Telekom and because of the size of this win, will finish in first place if Crvena Zvezda beats Gran Canaria. Crvena Zvezda meanwhile must win in its head-to-head duel with Granca to advance. Petr Benda paced the winners with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Ron Lewis and Arthur Lee added 17 each. Lee also dished 6 assists. Mike Lenzly came off the bench to net 12, including a pair of big fourth-quarter baskets to stave off a Crvena Zvezda rally. Filip Videnov led the home team with 10 points and Oliver Stevic posted 8 points and 9 rebounds in defeat.

Nymburk won the opening tip, but it was Crvena Zvezda that scored first when Mike Taylor fed Stevic. Lewis soon got Nymburk’s first basket and then put the visitors ahead with a triple. Baskets by Marko Keselj and Elmedin Kikanovic lifted Crvena Zvezda on top, but the game remained close for the rest of the quarter, which ended 15-15 after a Lee free throw. Lewis remained hot and took Nymburk to 15-20 early in the second quarter. Vladimir Stimac scored twice to bring Crvena Zvezda right back and a Vuk Radivojevic three-point play knotted the game at 22-22. Taylor helped the hosts go up 29-26. Benda answered with 4 points as Nymburk regained the lead. A Benda basket and Lee triple made it a 4-point lead before Radivojevic brought Crvena Zvezda within 33-35 at halftime.

Stevic crashed the offensive glass and knotted the game at 35-35 early in the second half. Benda did the same at the other end as the visitors set to make a run. Lewis scored from the line and from behind the arc as the Nymburk lead swelled to 6 points. Nemanja Bjelica’s layup was not enough to curb the Nymburk momentum as Lee drilled a triple and Benda and Radek Necas both got to the line, extending the lead to 12. Bjelica and Videnov both scored, but the visitors rolled on and went up 43-56 when Ladislav Sokolovsky ended the third quarter with a three-pointer. Crvena Zvezda battled back, even though Nymburk went up by 14 in a Mike Lenzly triple early in the fourth quarter. Videnov heated up and almost single-handedly brought his team within 52-59. However Lenzly stood tall for Nymburk with a clutch three and then a layup to revive his team. Pavel Pumprla’s layup further extended the lead, which reached 15 on a Lee second-chance basket and continued to grow till the final buzzer as the visitors celebrated a crucial road win.

Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Crvena Zvezda
"Cheers from our supporters addressed to the wining team at the end of the game tell how we played tonight. Nymburk knew what they want during all 40 minutes and we were far from the deal we made before the game. My players tried to restore their self-confidence through offense and that was our suicide. That was our gift to Nymburk, we let them get their rhythm. They had too many second and even third chance points as we lost focus on defense. We were not mentally strong enough to handle with three wins after three games in the Eurocup. We fell mentally, but we still have chance to reach the Quarterfinals. Next week we will try to beat Gran Canaria on the road."
KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"It is always great pleasure to play here in front of the people that know and understand basketball. We mostly played good defense and I think we deserved that win. This is a real big result for Nymburk. Now all is in our own hands. One more game in the group remains and I believe we will continue in the Eurocup competition."
