THE TAKE

A big fight to reach the Eurocup Finals starts in Pardubice, the Czech Republic, where CEZ Basketball Nymburk welcomes Bizkaia Bilbao Basket in the first left of their two-way Quarterfinals series on Tuesday. Nymburk reached the Eurocup Quarterfinals for the first time in club history while Bilbao has the chance to make it to the semifinals for the second time in as many Eurocup seasons. Bilbao is on a six-game winning streak in the Spanish League and was the first time to qualify for both the regular season and the Last 16 despite losing its last two games. Both teams met last season and Bilbao beat Nymburk twice. The hosts' main concern will be stopping Bilbao's go-to guy Marko Banic, whose post skills, mid-range jumpers and talent make the difference at power forward. Bilbao has many frontcourt options, as it can play more aggressive with blue-collar forward Axel Hervelle, improve its defense with shot blocking ace Jerome Moiso or open the court with Damir Markota's shots from downtown. Banic faces a critical matchup against Petr Benda, in what could be the key to this series. Phil Ricci is ready to use his experience and post skills against Moiso while Nymburk will get help inside from big men Radek Necas and Georgios Tsiaras. Bilbao has to make sure of stopping playmaker Arthur Lee, Nymburk's floor general, who is ready to take his team to the next level. Lee offers driving skills, leadership and quickness while Mike Lenzly offers court sense and experience. Both point guards, however, are set to share playing time on the floor. Lee faces a hard-nosed defender in Javi Rodriguez while Lenzly must step up against clutch shooter Javi Salgado. Both teams are deep at both wings, as Bilbao relies on do-it-all swingman Chris Warren and veteran small forward Alex Mumbru to lead the team to a valuable road win. Bilbao can change the game rhythm and improve its outside shooting with Janis Blums and Ronnie Seibutis coming off the bench or use Paco Vazquez as a defensive and three-point specialist. Warren faces a big time defensive challenge against all-around scorer Ron Lewis. Blums and Seibutis are ready to test their shooting skills against Ladislav Sokolovsky and Michal Kremen. Meanwhile, Mumbru is ready to use his ballhandling and driving skills against Sokolovsky and up-and-coming forward Pavel Pumprla. Bilbao must get Mumbru and Banic involved to open the floor for its many shooters, as well as controlling the defensive board. Nymburk needs a good game from Lee and Lewis to get the lead in the series. Expect an outstanding battle in a make-or-break showdown on Tuesday.

CEZ Nymburk
"We are very happy to be in the this level of the competition. It is a big challenge for us since Bilbao is a really good team with a great roster and quality coach. It is definetely going to be a tough game as it is expected in this phase of the competition. But we proved many times before that all the theory is not important because we won in the game where we were not favorites. And we hope we can repeat that on Tuesday night."

“It is a different team that the one we faced last year, but keeping the same playing time, as they have the same coach as last season. Ron Lewis wasn't with Nymburk last season and he is an important player for them. He is a good scorer, either in one-on-one situations, fast breaks and open shots, a good physical player. They also added Phil Ricci, that provides consistency and toughness around the baskets. Nymburk also signed Pumprla, that adds athleticism, as well as Mike Lenzly as shooting guard and backup playmaker. He is an experienced player and a good shooter. We have to go out there to win the game without thinking on the second leg at home. People talk about an 80-minute game, but as face a tough 40-minute one tomorrow and our mentality will be to win it, not trying to get a good score. It is an important game in Nymburk's history but also for Bilbao Basket. We are ready and know that we face a strong atmosphere, it is a noisy court but Crvena Zvezda and Turk Telekom won in there, and Gran Canaria lost in overtime. We have experienced players for this kind of games, who do even better in these situations."

"Bilbao is one of the hot adepts for the Eurocup Finals. They have a great record since they lost only two games until now. We played against a lot of great teams this season and were winning against them so I believe we can take the advantage of the home court where we are strong and make it against Bilbao."
Axel Hervelle - Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (photo basket-nymburk.cz)Bizkaia Bilbao Basket put a foot into the Eurocup Finals by taking a 47-59 road win at CEZ Nymburk on Tuesday night in the first leg of their home-and-away Quarterfinals series. Bilbao will start the return leg next Wednesday at home with great confidence to advance to the Finals that will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, on April 17 and 18. A 5-17 run in the fourth quarter broke the game open and allowed Bizkaia Bilbao Basket to score a big win. Javi Rodriguez tied the game at 42-42 from the foul line, then Janis Blums opened fire from beyond the arc and completed a four-point-play to push Bilbao ahead 42-46. Another three pointer from the guard increased the guests’ confidence and sparked another 0-8 push to reach the final 12-point margin. Jerome Moiso led the way with 11 points and 6 rebounds, Chris Warren and Marko Banic added 10 points apiece, while Blums bagged 9 more for the winners. Ron Lewis led all scorers with 17 points and Pavel Pumprla had 9 for the home team.

Michal Kremen got Nymburk going with a jumper and Petr Benda added free throws for a 4-0 lead. Banic and Warren stepped up with back-to-back jumpers, as the hosts tried to slow down the game tempo and get Benda and Radek Necas involved. Benda and Axel Hervelle traded baskets and Warren soon gave Bilbao its first lead, 6-8. Kremen kept pacing Nymburk with a three-pointer, but Bilbao dominated the defensive boards through an outstanding Hervelle. Banic scored again and Nymburk soon Ronald Lewis - CEZ Nymburk (photo basket-nymburk.cz)entered the foul bonus. Warren and Rodriguez made the most of it by drawing loose ball fouls and making 3 of 4 free throws to give Bilbao a 9-13 edge. Lewis sank free throws and Phil Ricci added a dunk to get Nymburk within 13-14. A layup by Lewis and a big triple by Ricci put the hosts back ahead, 18-15, after 10 minutes. Banic scored down low early in the second quarter, as the guests improved their defense. Nymburk went scoreless for more than two minutes until Pumprla took over with a dunk. Moiso came off the bench and immediately delivered with a three-point play, but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Lewis and Pumprla struck from downtown in a 7-0 run that gave Nymburk a 27-20 lead. Javi Salgado fed Moiso for a dunk that Ladislav Sokolovsky bettered with a triple to make it an 8-point game. Bilbao struggled to score and a jumper by Lewis gave Nymburk its first double-digit lead, 32-22, just before halftime.

Hervelle opened the third quarter with a dunk, but Benda answered for the hosts. Immediately Banic answered in the paint as Bilbao showed signs of fight. Lewis again from beyond the arc fueled the hosts to stay in front 37-31. Then he and Banic exchanged baskets before another dunk from Warren made it 39-35. Pumprla from beyond the arc excited the crowd and fixed the score at 42-35 for Nymburk after 30 minutes. Moiso used his size in the lane to back in and score. Then Rodriguez tied the game at 42-42 with a pair of free throws before Blums connected from downtown as part of the decisive run adding, also addind a free throw. He and Lewis exchanged triples to make it 47-49, however then Nymburk was held scoreless until the final buzzer. Meanwhile Warren and Moiso found again easy points and Damir Markota sealed the visitors’ success with 2 more free throws.

KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"The game was tough, just as we expected. Bilbao proved to be a good defensive team, but with all this we were still leading after three quarters. In the fourth, Bilbao took over and never looked back. We lost all the power that we had. Down the stretch we allowed Bilbao to score on fast breaks, which was the aspect of game that we were able to control in previous parts of the game. Bilbao deserved to win tonight, but I am proud of my players."
KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"There were two parts to our team tonight. We were focused and did a decent job on defense throughout the whole game. Offensively, we made too many turnovers in the second quarter and shot the ball poorly from long distance. I spoke to my players at halftime and encouraged them to be more aggressive with the ball offensively. I thought we did just that in second half. Many people considered us to be a sure pick for the finals in Vitoria, but I think Nymburk has a good team considering they put teams like Red Star and Turk Telekom out of the competition. I am leaving happy with the points difference from this game."
