THE TAKE

Pau-Orthez faces a critical battle in Group H to stay alive in the race for the elimination round as Artland Dragons comes to town. Coach Laurent Mopsus's Pau fell to 1-4 after losing at home to Lukoil Academic. The French team lost the game at the free throw line where Lukoil converted just 17-of-30 (57%) but still made more foul shots than Pau took (11-of-15 - 73%). Mopsus's Pau also held Lukoil to just 7-of-26 (27%) from long range but was unable to take advantage as it shot just 41% overall for the game. Shooting guard David Young did his best with 22 points while small forward Thierry Rupert added 10 points and 8 rebounds. Orthez just can't find a way to win as it is mired in a three-game losing streak. Another loss could put Pau a full three games behind third place in the group. Artland Dragons meanwhile hopes to finally win a game on the road after falling to 3-2 after its second blowout away from Germany against Kyiv. Coach Chris Fleming's Artland team allowed Kyiv to shoot 50% for the game while losing the rebounding battle 39-25. And Dragons forced just 12 turnovers. Fleming's team again struggled in the third quarter on the road as Kyiv out-scored Artland 26-11 to decide the game. In Artland's 44-point loss at Lukoil, the German side was out-scored 22-7 in the third period and was never able to rebound. Fleming switched up his starting lineup against Kyiv, taking out power forward Terrance Thomas and center Adam Chubb. But the starting five totaled just 29 points, and the two top scorers both came off the bench as guard Earl Rowland had 15 points and Chubb scored 10. Look for Fleming to likely change back as Artland could grab its first victory on the road - and second in Group H against Pau after winning in France in Week One.

Artland Dragons pulled into a tie atop Group H with its first road victory - a convincing 61-79 win at Pau-Orthez. Adam Chubb scored 16 points and Terrance Thomas had his best game of the tournament with 13 points and 4 rebounds as Artland improved to 4-2 in Group H. Dirk Madrich chipped in 10 points for Dragons, which also had Earl Rowland and Darious Hall add 9 points. With its fourth straight loss, Pau drops to 1-5 and now needs loads of help to reach the elimination round. Ludovic Vaty was the only Orthez player to hit double figures with 13 points while Shaun Fein and Antywane Robinson each had 8 points. Pau next plays at Benetton Tamoil while Artland hosts Lukoil Academic. The Dragons already led 18-33 after 10 minutes and boosted their margin to 32-52 midway through the third quarter. Pau managed to get within 44-55, but the Dragons jept a double-digit lead all the way until the final buzzer.

Chubb started the scoring for the visitors with a three-point play. Fein scored back-to-back baskets, the second a three-pointer for a 5-3 lead, and Robinson's long-ball made it 10-7. But Artland's Lamont McIntosh knocked down consecutive triples to start a 4-14 run to close the first quarter with Dragons up 14-21. Hall's basket kicked off a 4-12 surge to begin the second for a 18-33 Artland advantage. Thierry Rupert scored five points in trimming the deficit to 25-35. But Matt Freije answered with a long-ball and Artland would not let Pau closer in leading 30-44 at the break. David Young hit the first basket of the third period for Pau only to see Thomas knock down back-to-back baskets and Chubb's three-point play made it 32-52. Young and Fein each hit three-pointers in a 10-1 Pau run which cut the gap to 44-55. Artland however would not let Orthez get back into the game and Jan Rohdewald's late three-pointer gave the visitors a 49-64 advantage going into the fourth. Rowland scored the first basket for Artland to start the final period and Madrich's three-ball opened a 20-point gap again at 49-69. Madrid's next basket made it 50-76 with four minutes to play and Artland did not let Pau closer than 18 points the rest of the way.

Head Coaches

MOPSUS, LAURENT
Pau-Orthez
"We tried to play with determination and intensity but we could not compete with the good team of Artland. We missed too many arguments in the paint to resist and to impose our basket."
FLEMING, CHRIS
Artland Dragons
"The victory in Pau will be very important in a tough group. I am very satisfied with the basket we produced tonight. We always tried to find the best solution and the opened position to score."
HALL, DARIUS
Artland Dragons
"We began the game with intensity and efficiency to put Pau-Orthez in difficulties. Then we could play with cleverness to keep the avantage and to get a precious victory for the qualification."
