THE TAKE

CEZ Nymburk and BK Ventspils face off in the Czech Republic with both teams eyeing their first wins in this regular season. Nymburk comes in off a heartbreaking 78-77 loss at the hands of Lauretana Biella, while Ventspils got blown away by Brose Baskets 62-85 in front of its home fans. Neither squad wants to be the only 0-2 team in Group H, but Nymburk can take faith in its strong performance on opening day as well as in the support of its loyal supporters. In order to have a fighting chance to walk away with the road victory, Ventspils will need more big performances from its leaders, guard Janis Strelnieks and center Aaron Pettway, who made a powerful one-two combination in Week 1. Strelnieks paced his team in its loss to Bamberg with 16 points and 8 assists, while Pettway tallied a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards. Supporting these two main options, Ventspils also can count on scoring from forward Mareks Jurevicus, added muscle from big man Rolands Zakis and backcourt balance from guard Darris Bertans to complete its starting lineup. Off the bench, Ventspils taps guard Akeem Scott, forward Arturs Berzins, and center Lauris Blaus for additional scoring and valuable minutes to rest its starters. Arthur Lee and Ron Lewis make up a solid backcourt duo for Nymburk, but the visitors’ main offensive punch lies in the frontcourt. At center, the hosts have the muscle of Phil Ricchi, and starting forwards Petr Benda and Michal Kremen scored 11 points apiece versus Nymburk. If that were not enough, Nymburk can also rotate in forwards Pavel Pumprla and Ian Hanavan, who, along with reserve guard Ladislav Sokolovsky, combined for 31 points in Week 1. Both teams were out rebounded by wide margins in their Week 1 defeats. Whichever team can establish an advantage on the glass will have gone a long way to winning this Week 2 contest.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"I think it was quite a surprise when Venstpils lost their home game against Bamberg. And not just because they did not get the victory on their home court, but also because the difference in the score was pretty high. Venstpils is a team that has a lot of young, talented guys on the roster. They are very well coached and use a lot of systems on defense. It will be important for us to start the game fully concentrated and execute what we have learned about Ventspils."

"In a group of four teams it is very important to win the home games to have a chance to advance to the next level of the Eurocup. This is our first home game and therefore we must fully concentrate on our performance. Venstpils is not a team of big names and that can be dangerous, because they do not rely on a few players. Every player can be dangerous. It is a pity that we did not succeed in Italy, therefore we want to correct it in this game and get the victory."
CEZ Basketball NYmburk took the big showdown between reigning domestic league champions in Group H by downing BK Ventspils 79-57 in Pardubice, the Czech Republic on Tuesday night. Pettway dunked it twice and soon added a turnaround jumper for a 33-27 Ventspils deficit. Pavel Slezak rescued Nymburk with a three-pointer but Pettway took over with an alleyoop slam. Sokolovsky and Janis Strelnieks traded layups while Ricci banked in a mid-range shot for a 40-31 score. Zakis and Scott got Ventspils a bit closer, 42-34, at halftime.

Sokolovsky hit free throws and Lee added a running jumper in transition to give Nymburk a 12-point lead, 46-34, immediately after the break. Ventspils could not find the way to the basket while Benda and Michal Kremen broke the game open, 51-34. Lewis capped a 13-0 run with consecutuive fast break layups that sent the crowd to their feet, 55-34. Ventspils needed more than 6 minutes to score after the break, missing 8 shots and committing 6 turnovers until Kalve nailed a corner triple. He soon capped a 0-7 run with a layup but a jumper by Benda kept Nymburk way ahead, 57-41, after 30 minutes. Kalve kept pacing Ventspils with another three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Strelnieks also struck from downtown and Pettway added a fast break dunk to give the guests some hope at 59-49. Lewis banked in a driving jumper and soon added a triple to keep the hosts out of trouble, 64-49. Pettway shined with a three-point play but Ricci and Lee sealed the outcome, 69-52, with under 6 minutes left. Ventspils did not recover, as Nymburk controlled the defensive board and used long possessions to please their fans with a well-deserved home win.

Head Coaches

KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"I was very pleased with the way my team started the game tonight. Our defensive effort was just superb today and it set the tone of the game. Especially in the third quarter we took a firm control of the game thanks to our defense. To win a Eurocup game because of our defense makes me very proud. Thanks to all the fans that came to support us today. I hope everybody will come back again next week and will bring a friend along."
GALVANOVSKIS, AGRIS
BK Ventspils
"Tonight we started the game very bad after falling back early by 11 points. We have a very young team and I told my players that the key factor in today's game would be our patience. Unfortunately, too often, especially in the first half we kept taking ill advised shots, got caught up in up-and-down game and went scoreless during six minutes at one point. Eurocup is a different level competition from the Baltic League where we can afford some mistakes but not here. I hope this game will be a learning opportunity for my team."

Players

BENDA, PETR
CEZ Nymburk
"It was an important win today for us. I guess a must win if we want to think about making it out of the group. I hope this win which we won by a large margin will give us a good boost for the remainder of our games. Ventpils played well pick and roll situations in the first half that we needed to adjust to during halftime. I think our second half was a great team effort defensively."
