THE TAKE

Two classic squads in continental competitions meet for the first time in 21 years when Real Madrid and Mapooro Cantu go against each other in the Spanish capital in Group A on Thursday. These teams have not faced each other since the 1991 Korac Cup final, which Cantu won in overtime behind an unstoppable Pace Mannion. Cantu leads their head-to-head series 7-1. Madrid's only win against Cantu came in 1975 when it beat the Italian powerhouse 105-98. Madrid has Sergio Llull back from an injury but he may see limited playing time. As such, Dontaye Draper and Sergio Rodriguez will once again share the point guard duties, trying to make the Whites play the fun-to-watch, fast-paced basketball that all Madrid fans love to watch. Draper will not have it easy against Cantu’s Jerry Smith. Meanwhile, Rodriguez must use his quickness and driving skills against experienced playmaker Nicolas Mazzarino. Cantu needs a good game from its wing players to increase its chances to upset Madrid. Pietro Aradori offers scoring skills and size against last week’s bwin co-MVP Rudy Fernandez, who has been in very good shape so far this season. Manuchar Markoishvili must use his experience and all-around game against Carlos Suarez. Madrid relies on Jaycee Carroll to change the game with his outstanding scoring skills and can use Marty Pocius to stop Aradori. Jeff Brooks might be Cantu's X-factor due to his size, power and energy off the bench. The battle in the paint will be the biggest key to this game. Cantu has a nice battery of shooters, but lacks a big center, so it needs to play with high intensity against Mirza Begic. Maarty Leunen and Alex Tyus will see most of the playing time under the baskets, but Marco Cusin and Marko Scekic offer intensity, hustle and effectiveness on offense. Cusin and Scekic must find the way to stop Madrid’s Felipe Reyes and Marcus Slaughter. Meanwhile, Leunen faces a critical matchup against two-time Euroleague Rising Star Nikola Mirotic, whose talent and deep shooting range can change any game. Madrid needs to play up-tempo, get Fernandez and Mirotic involved, power the offensive board through Reyes, Slaughter and Begic and get the crowd involved if the game plan doesn't work to perfection. Mirza Begic led the way with 17 points while Rudy Fernandez and Nikola Mirotic both scored 14 points and Jaycee Carroll and Sergio Llull each added 11 points for Madrid, which last knocked off Cantu in 1975 and improved to 3-1 in the group. It was Real’s only other victory over the Italian side, which won the last meeting in the final of the 1991 Korac Cup. Cantu dropped to 1-3 in the group despite 18 points from Pietro Aradori, while Jeff Brooks and Maarten Leunen both scored 13 points. First quarter: Early 10-0 run puts Madrid in front Begic completed a three-point-play to get Madrid going then Mirotic nailed a rocket from downtown, Fernandez added a pull-jumper and the Slovenian big man scored with a lefty jump hook to open the game with a 10-0 run. We are not happy just to be here, in the Euroleague regular season after winning the qualifying round. Our goal is to compete in each and every game and only with that mentality we will have a chance to make it to the Top 16. If we don't go out there with that mentality and quit, there is little we can do. Madrid has the talent, players and organization to be a Final Four candidate. Why do I play well against Madrid? We managed to get here by surviving the qualifying round and are here to learn day by day and fight for a Top 16 spot.
