THE TAKE

ASK Riga looks to defend its home court yet again in a very even Group A as it welcomes Maroussi Costa Coffee. Like the other teams in the group, head coach Ramunas Butautas's side is 1-1. Riga improved to that mark after beating Zadar at home 106-94 last week. Butautas's men did a great job moving the ball and hitting from the outside, knocking down 16 of 27 (59%) three-pointers. Guard Corey Brewer and forward Uvis Helmanis both were a perfect 4 of 4 from long range in scoring 21 and 16 points, respectively. And forward Milutin Aleksic collected 13 points and 6 assists. All told, ASK dished out 22 assists. Center Bruno Sundov also had an outstanding game with 24 points and 11 rebounds. And reserves guard Andrius Mazutis and center Raitis Grafs both scored in double figures as well. Butautas needed that bench help after both Helmanis and Brewer fouled out. The coach must be happy his team got the win, especially after scoring just 11 points in the second quarter. However Riga should work at getting to the free-throw line more after shooting just 10 foul shots while Zadar went to the line 32 times. If ASK Riga can shoot anywhere near as well from long range against Maroussi, chances are good of improving to 2-1. Maroussi meanwhile also won last week to move to 1-1, beating Chorale Roanne 88-73 at home. Head coach Anastasios Markopoulos's side forced 20 Roanne turnovers and won the battle of the boards 35-22. Big man Loukas Mavrokefalides led the way with 23 points - his second straight game with at least 20 points - as well as 9 rebounds. Guard Konstantinos Charalampidis added 17 points and point guard Billy Keys chipped in 16 points. If Markopoulos can get at least three scorers in double digits, that means the ball is moving well on offense and Maroussi has a good chance of improving to 2-1.

Quotes Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
ASK Riga
"I hope that after Friday’s tough game against Barons in the Latvian League, we had enough time for the players to prepare for this game. For us this game is very important, everyone wants to win at home and end first round with victory, especially before Christmas."
MARKOPOULOS, ANASTASIOS
Maroussi Costa Coffee
"ASK Riga is a team with quality and they also know how to defend their home court. It is not an easy game, because we have to play there without two important players, Kostas Kaimakoglou and Billy Keys. We will do our best to find solutions in offense and defense to fight for the victory."

Players

Bruno Sundov - ASK RigaA first-place tie was the prize on Tuesday as ASK Riga defended its homecourt by downing Maroussi Costa Coffee 84-70 in Group A, where home teams have been dominant so far. Brilliant three-point shooting helped ASK turn an even first half into a six-point lead that would never drop to fewer than 4 points in the second half. ASK's 2.21-meter center, Bruno Sundov, continues to be a matchup nightmare for opponents, hurting them as much from the inside as the three-point-line. Sundov reached double figures in both points and rebounds with 23 and 10, respectively, to lead the winners. His teammate Uvis Helmanis, another big man, was only one rebound short of a double-double with 19 points and 9 boards, while teenager Dairis Bertans came off the bench to please the Riga crowd with 13 points. Konstantinos Charalampidis led a perfectly balanced Maroussi offence with 12 points. Pat Galathes posted 10 and five more scorers contributed with at least 7 points for the guests, who will try to avenge the loss against ASK when the two teams meet week in Greece.

ASK wasted no time at the start of the game as Sundov opened the scoring from downtown and Helmanis dunked and made the free throw for a three-point play. Maroussi stayed unimpressed and reduced ASK's lead to a single point on a basket by Loukas Mavrokefalides. Jarod Stevenson matched a Helmanis triple with 3 free throws and, soon enough, Charalampidis put the visitors in front, 9-10. ASK answered with a 6-0 run before Stevenson evened it up at 15-15. After two more ties, Corey Brewer went to the line to give ASK a 20-19 advantage to end the first quarter. Power forward Calathes, who came on for Maroussi in the second quarter, needed only a few seconds to dunk and a minute more to do it again. Helmanis and Sandis Valters scored shots from beyond the arc to retake the lead, and then Bertans and Sundov expanded it to 33-27 for the hosts. After Shawn Huff hit a triple for the visitors, Bertans and Sundov combined for 5 points for ASK. Had it not been for two baskets by Charalampidis, ASK lead could have had an even bigger advantage than its 41-36 halftime edge.

Big men Mavrokefalides and Sundov exchanged three-pointers to start the third quarter, then Brewer and Helmanis helped ASK get a 10-point advantage, forcing Maroussi head coach Anastasios Markopoulos to call a timeout. That helped the guests to start scoring again, but the lead didn't shrink as Sundov was doing the same at the other end, until Fanis Koumpouras and Stevenson made consecutive triples to reduce the difference to 55-51. But Helmanis scored 2 free throws then and Bertans connected on another long shot on the third quarter's last possession, making it 60-51 and 10 minutes to go. To start the final quarter, Maroussi went inside to Mavrokefalides, who delivered, and got help from Shawn Huff. However, Helmanis and Sundov kept boosting the hosts at the other end, and they got a helper as 1.80-meter guard Andrius Mazutis dunked and added a layup for the hosts. Calathes stepped up with 6 points for Maroussi, who scored easily enough now, but couldn't prevent ASK from doing so, too. With 2 minutes to go, Christoforos Stefanidis lowered the difference again, to 76-70, and Maroussi needed a stop that just wouldn't happen as Valters released ASK's 11th triple of the night, and Riga could celebrate.

Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
ASK Riga
"I want to thank my players, who had a great game tonight. I am espceially happy for our defense and playing as a team. I am satified with the game, this was also a good game for our young player Bertans whose play was very confident tonight. In a week we will play in Athens, but there is never two similar games. Maroussi plays good at home that's why the game will be hard."
MARKOPOULOS, ANASTASIOS
Maroussi Costa Coffee
"Congratulations to ASK for the win. We had good minutes, but for most of the game, ASK were better. In the fourth quarter we reached a minus 6 but we had bad concentration, they scored a three-pointer and some other shots and that's why we lost. We know how ASK plays, but let their centers shoot three-pointers which they used perfectly. Our home game will be better."

Players

BERTANS, DAIRIS
ASK Riga
"We started good in the first half, but there were problems in defense. In the second half we improved our defense and showed more team work, we scored our shots in offense and we deserved to win."
CALATHES, PAT
Maroussi Costa Coffee
"We prepeared for the game very seriosly. ASK perfectly used their chances, and that's what decided the winner of the game. We did not play our best game tonight."
