THE TAKE

Group I is still up for grabs but could become a bit clearer after Zadar hosts Unics Kazan. Coach Aleksandar Petrovic's Zadar remained in the running for the elimination round by winning big at home against Strasbourg to improve to 2-3. Zadar gave up just 9 points in the second quarter in building a 23-point halftime lead and cruising to the victory. Petrovic's Croatian side shot 51% for the game while holding Strasbourg to 35% from the field in snapping a two-game losing streak. Small forward Shamell Stallworth scored 25 points while guards Julius Johnson and Toni Prostran each added 12 points in the winning effort. PGE Turów Zgorzelec leads Group I with a 4-1 record and the remaining five teams are either 3-2 or 2-3, meaning a Zadar home victory would help tremendously its chances of advancing. Petrovic's additional motivation is Unics's Week One victory over Zadar, which made just 16-of-28 (57%) from the free throw line - and that in a three-point loss. Kazan meanwhile posted its second victory, racing past EiffelTowers to end a three-game losing streak and improve to 2-3. Unics shot a blistering 61% from the floor and turned the ball over only 10 times. The Russian club's defense held EiffelTowers to just 40% for the game while forcing 18 turnovers in the win. Power forward Dusko Savanovic scored 20 points; playmaker Jerry McCullough had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals; and small forward Tariq Kirksay collected 15 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. The win was not enough to save coach Antanas Sireika's job, which was handed to Aco Petrovic. If Petrovic can get a similar showing against Zadar, Kazan may even its record and remain very much in the race for the elimination round.

Zadar took a very important step to reach the elimination rounds in Group I by downing Unics Kazan 76-64 at home on Tuesday. Zadar improved to 3-3 in Group I while Unics dropped to 2-4. Unics, however, plays 3 of its remaining 4 games at home in Kazan, Russia. Shammel Stallworth and Jure Lalic paced the winners each with 13 points, Pankracije Barac got 11 while Andrej Stimac added 10 for Zadar. Virgil Stanescu had 13 points for Unics. Tariq Kirksay posted a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds while Dusko Savanovic also added 10 points for the guests. Zadar opened the game with a 8-2 run and soon used a 10-0 run to boost its margin to 21-11. Kirksay and Stanescu got Unics within 26-21 after 10 minutes while Nikolai Padius helped the guests to complete their comeback, 29-30. A layup by Stallworth allowed Zadar to get a 38-36 edge at halftime. Lalic and Stallworth fueled a game-breaking 8-0 run that broke the game open, 46-36, right after the break. Zadar soon boosted its margin to 58-45 and kept a safe lead throughout the fourth quarter to add an important win.

Jere Macura and Stallworth fueled a 8-2 opening run for Zadar. Dmitry Sokolov stepped up with 5 points in a 0-7 run that Kirksay capped to tie the game at 11-11. Zadar did not panic, however, as a three-pointer by Jubu Johnson sparked a 10-0 run in which Corey Brewer had 5 points and that Lalic capped with free throws for a 21-11 Zadar lead. Kirksay and Stanescu stepped up for Unics to get the guests within 26-21 after 10 minutes. Padius took over with 7 quick points that allowed Unics to get its first lead, 29-30, early in the second quarter. Zadar improved its defense, while a basket by Barac and free throws by Brewer and Todor Gecevski gave the hosts a 34-31 edge. Unics went scoreless for more than 2 minutes until Kirksay had a put-back basket, but Stimac and a final layup by Stallworth gave Zadar a 38-36 halftime edge. Lalic and Stallworth kept the hosts' momentum going after the break, combining for 7 points in a 8-0 run that made Unics call timeout at 46-36. Stanescu tried to change things for the guests but only managed to get the guests within 50-43 midway through the third quarter. The guests had entered the foul bonus, as Stimac and Gecevski made free throws for a 58-45 Zadar lead after 30 minutes. Marko Tusek tried to ignit the guests' comeback with a triple but Zadar stayed focused early in the fourth quarter. Stimac stepped up with a put-back basket and Lalic copied him for a 62-50 Zadar margin. Time was running out for Unics, but Johnson stroke from downtown and Barac scored to seal the outcome, 67-54, allowing all Zadar fans to carry on dreaming on seeing their team go deep in the competition.

Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Zadar
"I think that this game could be summarized in only a few words. Compliments to the players, and thanks to the audience, because they were the sixth player. The importance is that Zadar is able to win each game on a different way, what makes Zadar one of the hardest teams for scouting. Against every rule, the best game we played at the third quarter when we played without the best player, Corey Brewer, and that shows the quality of the team. I would not agree with Aco only in one thing, because I annulled his technical foul with my technical foul in the moment when my team had the ball possession. At the beginning we had problems with the throughput of the ball, it was obvious that we lacked fresh ideas, but a few minutes later we made the great defense with the zone, which helped us to stay in the game and not to throw too much energy. The moment when we pushed Kazan and limited them to only 9 points in the third quarter, says enough. Still, there is no time to celebrate, at the moment we are in great shape and positive streak, and should make an effort to keep it that way. Things were not looking bright after the comeback from Jerusalem when we lost two players, Stipcevic and Lalic, and lost the game, but after that we took four victories. We are coming back to the ULEB cup, and this is the moment where we have the most chances to advance because I don't think that the next two teams can create us more problems than Turow and Unics. I am glad that the audience recognized that something big can be born here. Of course, we should have a lot of luck, because at the moment there are only seven players in a quality rotation."
PETROVIC, ACO
Unics Kazan
"I have a chance for the first, and hope not the last, time to congratulate the coach that has the same name as I do, Aci Petrovicu for the victory. It is hard for me because I came in this team five days ago, and it is hard to make the new concept that I want, but I think that the team has shown a lot of energy and desire to make what we agreed against Zadar, but we had a lot of holes and empty minutes, especially in the third quarter. I don't agree with my player that the bad opening was crucial for the game, because we took it back later. If we had not made the technical foul I think we would have led the first half. Everything was solved at the time that is usual for those sorts of games. You are in a city of basketball, and now have the coach that leads the time in the magnificent way, and at the same time knows how to control the audience. You were in a great shape, we are just one of the teams that you have conquered. We are turning to the next game, and I can't wait for the pause, and I hope that my team will play better and try to catch the last train to ULEB Cup because the last three games we play at home."

Players

LALIC, JURE
Zadar
"We played another good game, and now we already have a chain of few great games behind. I think we won the game with defense, because we limited Kazan to 64 points which is a success. I would especially like to emphasize the third quarter where they scored only 9 points, and I think it was the key to the victory. We look ahead at another game, Cibona is next, and I would like to thank the audience, they were the sixth player on the court. I hope it is going to be the same way at the last game in Jazine against Budućnost."
SAVANOVIC, DUSKO
Unics Kazan
"What can I say, for a team such as Unics, we did not start the game for the first five minutes, as we should have. We should have taken it stronger and more seriously, and we probably thought that it was going to be easier. I don't know the reason why, because half of the team doesn't know the situation in Zadar, and they don't play here for the first time. For the quality of Unics we should have stronger to open the game. Later Zadar went highly they rotated 7 players, because the home couch didn't have all 12 players on disposal. And we could not reach them any more. Congratulations to the crowd in Zadar, it probably means a lot to them."
