THE TAKE

Sole possession of third place or even a tie for second place is up for grabs in Group E as Benetton Fribourg hosts Swans Gmunden. Coach Damien Leyrolles's Fribourg struggled to find any offense in the second half as it scored just 17 points after halftime in losing at Antwerp Giants to fall to 3-3. Leyrolles's team held Antwerp to 39% shooting but only made 31% itself while committing 18 turnovers. Power forward David Esterkamp hit just 2-of-14 shots. Point guard Pascal Perrier-David led the way with 11 points while small forward Douglas Tshomba had 10 points off the bench and center Ken Johnson collected 7 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks. This game will go a long way in pushing the winner towards the elimination round since both teams are 3-3 with Triumph Lyubertsy is 5-1, Buducnost is 4-2 and Antwerp is 2-4. Swans Gmunden snapped a three-game losing streak in beating Hapoel Galil Elyon at home to improve to 3-3. Coach Bob Gonnen's Swans shot 53% for the game and made 21-of-26 (81%) from the foul line to Hapoel's 15-of-25 (60%). All-around guard Deteri Mayes had 29 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while small forward Peter Hunter poured in 25 points and forward Ian Boylan added 11 points and 6 assists. All five of Gonnen's starters scored in double figures but the bench tallied just a single basket by big man Andreas Helmigk in 34 minutes of action. Whether or not that will be enough against Fribourg remains to be seen.
