THE TAKE

Antwerp Giants can remain alive in the hunt for the elimination round if it knocks off Hapoel Galil Elyon in Group E. Coach Sven Van Camp's Antwerp dropped to 2-5 after losing at Buducnost before the holiday break. Giants shot 54% from the field and out-rebounded Buducnost 25-17 but Van Camp's Belgian side committed 27 turnovers. Small forward Brandon Gay had 18 points and power forward Ian Hanavan added 14 points. But it was not enough for Antwerp, which is two games behind Swans Gmunden for third place in the group. Van Camp's team will also be going for revenge after losing at Galil Elyon in Week Three. That was the only ULEB Cup victory for Hapoel, which fell to 1-6 after losing at home against Triumph Lyubertsy. Neither team shot the ball over 45% but Galil Elyon lost the game at the free throw line - hitting just 9-of-12 compared to Lyubertsy's 19-of-28. The Israeli side also committed 19 turnovers. That proved too much for club management, who eventually sacked coach Eli Kaneti and replaced him with Danny Franco. The former assistant will need to get more out of his lineup, which had power forward Gil Mossinson collect 16 points and 10 rebounds against Triumph while small forward Mike Campbell had 15 points and playmaker Yogev Ohayon added 12 points and 7 assists. Galil Elyon can be eliminated from the next round with a loss and a victory by Fribourg. Franco however is more interested in getting his new team into a fine form.

David Toya - Antwerp GiantsDavid Toya grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and scored a layup in the closing seconds to help the Antwerp Giants take a thrilling 78-77 home win over Hapoel Galil Elyon on Tuesday night in Group E. The Giants now share fourth place in the table with Benetton Olympic Fribourg with a 3-5 record, holding slim hopes to advance to the elimination rounds. Meanwhile Galil falls to 1-7 and has been mathematically wliminated from further contention. Brandon Gay and Ian Hanavan led the way for the Giants scoring 16 points apiece, while Toya added 10 with 6 rebounds and Yves Dupont posted 9. Mike Campbell of Galil Elyon led all the scorers with 23 points, 7 boards and 4 steals, Yogev Ohayon added 17 points and Gili Mossinson bagged 12.

Ohayon made a strong start for Galil, scoring the first 4 points in the game. But after Yves Dupont tied it at 7-7, Aleksander Lichodzijewski gave Antwerp its first lead, 11-9. Mike Campbell drilled a three pointer and hit an attempt from the foul line to give Galil a 14-18 lead after 10 minutes. However the Giants caught fire to start the second period. Toya capped an 11-0 run for Antwerp to make it 25-18. Jai Lewis tied the game at 30-30 with a pair of free throws with two minutes left till halftime. Gay grabbed an offensive board and scored inside to fix the score at 34-32 for the Giants at the break. Hanavan helped the hosts to their first double-digit margin early in the second half, but Hapoel didn't give up and led by Campbell, Ohayon and Mossinson, made an amazing 23-9 run to be in front 55-59 at the end of the quarter. Lichodzijewski scored 5 in a row to give a 67-64 margin to Antwerp, but the game was still balanced with the score 70-70 with five minutes left. Hanavan made it 73-70 for Antwerp, but Clif Brown with a minute-and-a-half and then Campbell with a pair from the foul line put Hapoel ahead. Campbell scored two free throws for the last advantage of the visitors, 76-77, before Toya conquered the crucial offensive rebound and scored in the paint to give the win to Antwerp and Ohayon missed a desperation shot for the win.
