THE TAKE

Both Turk Telekom and KK Bosna grabbed Group A victories in last week's ULEB Cup opening game day. The Turks return home looking to build upon their tough road win at Siauliai, where Michael Wright had the best game of the competition with 37 points and 10 rebounds. Khalid El-Amin added 25 points for Turk Telekom. The Bosnian debutants meanwhile were never threatened at home against Guildford Heat. But Bosna will need another balanced attack to beat the mighty Turks. Lance Williams led the way with 23 points but five other players scored at least 10 points. Jurij Zdovc's team however cannot expect to control the boards as easily as against the Brits, who were out-rebounded 39-24. And Bosna must take better control of the ball as they will not be able to afford 17 turnovers on the road - not to mention shooting just 13-of-24 from the foul stripe.

Turk Telekom eased to their second straight victory in Group A, knocking off Bosnian side KK Bosna 95-82 thanks to a balanced attack in Ankara, Turkey. Turk Telekom forward Chris Williams provided a superb game off the bench with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals. Khalid El-Amin (17 points), Erwin Dudley (15), Michael Wright (14) and Haluk Yildirim (13) all scored in double figures as well for coach Ercument Sunter's Turkish team, who will play at DKV Joventut next week. The ULEB Cup debutants Bosna were hit with an 18-4 run at the end of the first half and could not find the power to come back in the second half in falling to 1-1. Lance Williams (23 points) and Kyle Hill (21) combined for 44 points and Bryan Bailey came off the bench to score 11 points. But coach Jure Zdovc's team made just 3-of-16 three-pointers (19%). Bosna play at Siauliai next week.

Dudley opened the scoring for the Turks and the lead was only 13-11 late in the first quarter until Chris Williams scored back-to-back baskets for a 17-11 advantage which was 17-13 after one period. Yildirim's trey to start the second made it a seven-point gap and Chris Williams pushed the lead to 27-19 only to see Hill's basket pull the Bosnians to within 29-26. But Turk Telekom's veteran playmaker El-Amin tallied nine points in an 18-4 surge to end the half ahead 47-30. Yildirim and Tutku Acik started the second half with three-pointers for a 53-30 lead, which eventually bulged to 27 points - 59-32. Bosna continued to fight and trimmed the deficit to 76-57 after three periods. Goran Ikonic knocked down two long-range shots to pull Zdovc's team as close as 15 points - 84-69 - halfway through the final period. It was only an 84-71 advantage when Lance Williams failed to convert a three-point play. But head coach Sunter's Turks would not let Bosna closer than 13 points the rest of the game.
