THE TAKE

Either BC Hemofarm Stada or CSU Asesoft will collect their second victory in Group C as the 1-1 teams face off in Serbia. The hosts Hemofarm were dominated last week at Akasvayu, getting out-rebounded 47-33 while hitting less than 29% of their shots. Power forward Vladan Vukosavljevic collected 18 points and nine rebounds in the loss, and the Spaniards held small forward Goran Jagodnik to just 11 points. The addition of guard Clinton Johnson (2 points, 0-10 shooting) to the starting lineup didn't help much either for Hemofarm Head coach Miroslav Noklic. A better showing from Johnson could go a long way in helping the Serbs open up their game. The Romanians Asesoft were slowed last week against Spirou Charleroi after all five starters scored in double figures in the opening win over Hanzevast. Head coach Mladan Jojic's team shot just 39% against Charleroi and will need a better performance to collect their first road victory. After combining for 31 points in the opener, shooting guard Reggie Elliott (four points) and power forward Bojan Obradovic hit for just 13 against the Belgians. Those two players will need to bounce back if Asesoft hope to win.

Vladan Vukosavljevic collected 28 points and eight rebounds as he guided BC Hemofarm Stada to a 95-85 victory at home against CSU Asesoft in Group C of the ULEB Cup. Nebojsa Joksimovic had 12 points and eight assists and Goran Jagodnik scored 18 points as Miroslav Nilokic's Serbian team improved to 2-1 in the group. Asesoft fell to 1-2 despite an excellent all-around showing by Reggie Elliott (15 points, six rebounds and seven assists) as well as a double-double by Virgil Carutasu (11 points and 14 rebounds). Arvydas Cepulis added 19 points in a losing cause for the Romanians. Asesoft trailed by just five points midway through the second quarter but fell apart in the third period.

Vukosavljevic opened the scoring for Hemofarm while Rashard Griffith scored five of Asesoft's first seven points in a 7-7 game. Jagodnik's second three-pointer made it 10-7 and it was 12-8 after another basket by him. Five points by Cepulis gave the Romanians the lead 12-13 before the hosts went on a 9-2 run (two baskets by Joksimovic and a three by Jagodnik). Another three-ball from Cepulis had it at 25-22, but Hemofarm led 28-22 after one quarter. Vukosavljevic scored first in the second period, but Cepulis, Bojan Obradovic, Tomas Gaidamavicius and Elliott all drained three-pointers and Carutasu's basket gave Asesoft a 37-42 lead. The Serbs heated up from the outside and Jagodnik knocked down a long one and Clinton Johnson hit two treys for 46-44 lead, which grew to 52-47 at the break. Stefan Markovic's basket opened an 11-0 run which was finished by Joksimovic's three-point play for a 63-47 lead. Darius Hargrove and Obradovic both hit three-pointers to trim the deficit to 65-53. Joksimovic answered with a long range shot for a 70-53 advantage and Milivoje Bozovic knocked down two from downtown for a 78-61 lead after three periods. Rawle Marshall pushed the gap to 80-61 and Hargrove trimmed it back to 80-65. The lead was still 89-73 on Bozovic's basket. The Romanians tried a final push as Carutasu hit a three-pointer and Obradovic's basket made it 89-78. And Cepulis' three-ball cut it to 94-85 with less than a minute left. And Asesoft just could not get any closer.

Head Coaches

NIKOLIC, MIROSLAV
BC Hemofarm Stada
"I am satisfied with the win but not with our performance. I expect we shall be a team with two new players in 20 days. Asesoft was better in rebounding. We were not patient in offense and we had too many 3-point shots. Hemofarm is able to play much better and I am sure we are going to show that and reach second leg."
JOJIC, MLADEN
CSU Asesoft
"The game was full of good and bad things according to us. Hemofarm is an excellent team and congratulations for their win. Our player Rashard Griffith entered the game good but soon he fell into foul trouble and we lacked our best player tonight. For the games like this in the ULEB Cup it is a must to have more than one player in a shape if you wish to win. We had some brilliant moments but it was not enough to win."
