KK Buducnost, a Euroleague regular at the start of the millennium, looks to regain membership to European basketball’s elite group. Standing in its way is traditional French power Asvel Basket, which banged with Europe’s best just last season. The two square off Tuesday in the first leg of a two-game series with the winner advancing to the next stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, from which two teams will reach the regular season. Buducnost, the perennial Montenegrin champion, has undergone a bit of roster upheaval over the summer, but arrives to the Qualifying Rounds with a balanced and determined roster. Power forward Vladimir Dragicevic, last season’s team leader in points and rebounds, anchors a frontcourt that added Marko Scekic and brings Bojan Dubljevic back from loan. Experienced playmaker Aleksej Nesovic joins Nikola Otasevic to run the show, while shooting guard Gintaras Kadziulis arrives to generate points and to help mold promising talents Aleksa Popovic and Vladimir Mihailovic into top scorers. Nemanja Gordic and Sead Sehovic round out head coach Dejan Radonjic’s squad from the wings. Asvel has significantly changed its roster, but kept head coach Vincent Collet around to lead the new-look team back to the Euroleague. With a year of top-level play under his belt, young Bangaly Fofana will team with Andrija Zizic to give Asvel a solid one-two punch in the paint. The versatile Davon Jefferson and Mickeal Gelabale compliment one another perfectly at forward, with Kim Tillie bringing size off the bench. A.D. Vassallo is an athletic and aggressive option at small forward. Cliff Hammonds brings speed and playmaking ability to the point guard spot, while veteran Laurent Foirest, Leo Westermann and Edwin Jackson will all get chances at shooting guard. Asvel will need strong showing from Jefferson and Hammonds in their respective matchups against Dragicevic and the Buducnost playmaking duo of Nesovic and Otasevic to be able to return home for the second leg with a win. For Buducnost the key will be to control the pace, keep Asvel from running and use the energy from the home fans to stand tall and start the season with a smile.
