THE TAKE

KK Buducnost, a Euroleague regular at the start of the millennium, looks to regain membership to European basketball’s elite group. Standing in its way is traditional French power Asvel Basket, which banged with Europe’s best just last season. The two square off Tuesday in the first leg of a two-game series with the winner advancing to the next stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, from which two teams will reach the regular season. Buducnost, the perennial Montenegrin champion, has undergone a bit of roster upheaval over the summer, but arrives to the Qualifying Rounds with a balanced and determined roster. Power forward Vladimir Dragicevic, last season’s team leader in points and rebounds, anchors a frontcourt that added Marko Scekic and brings Bojan Dubljevic back from loan. Experienced playmaker Aleksej Nesovic joins Nikola Otasevic to run the show, while shooting guard Gintaras Kadziulis arrives to generate points and to help mold promising talents Aleksa Popovic and Vladimir Mihailovic into top scorers. Nemanja Gordic and Sead Sehovic round out head coach Dejan Radonjic’s squad from the wings. Asvel has significantly changed its roster, but kept head coach Vincent Collet around to lead the new-look team back to the Euroleague. With a year of top-level play under his belt, young Bangaly Fofana will team with Andrija Zizic to give Asvel a solid one-two punch in the paint. The versatile Davon Jefferson and Mickeal Gelabale compliment one another perfectly at forward, with Kim Tillie bringing size off the bench. A.D. Vassallo is an athletic and aggressive option at small forward. Cliff Hammonds brings speed and playmaking ability to the point guard spot, while veteran Laurent Foirest, Leo Westermann and Edwin Jackson will all get chances at shooting guard. Asvel will need strong showing from Jefferson and Hammonds in their respective matchups against Dragicevic and the Buducnost playmaking duo of Nesovic and Otasevic to be able to return home for the second leg with a win. For Buducnost the key will be to control the pace, keep Asvel from running and use the energy from the home fans to stand tall and start the season with a smile.

Vladimir Dragicevic - KK Buducnost (photo Buducnost)Buducnost defeated Asvel Basket 69-64 in the first stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds on Tuesday night in Podgorica. New team captain Vladimir Dragicevic led Buducnost with 18 points and 7 rebounds. The hosts burst out to a 19-2 start, but Asvel came back to tie it and the game was close throughout the second half, though Buducnost always maintained a slim lead. Gintaras Kadziulis added 14 points for the winners, Marko Scekic had 12 and Marko Simonovic and Aleksej Nesovic 10 each for Montenegrin champion. A.D. Vassallo scored 18 for Asvel, Mickael Galabale had 11 and Cliff Hammons 10. The two teams meet again in the second leg on Friday in France with the winner of the two-game series advancing to the second qualifying round to face the winner of the clash between Le Mans and Banvit.

Cliff Hammonds - Asvel Basket (photo Buducnost)Buducnost opened the game with a 19-2 charge in the first five minutes. The hosts hit almost every shot and used an aggressive zone defense to stop Asvel. Asvel head coach Vincent Collet changed his whole lineup but Galabale and then Asvel started to score. On the other side, the Asvel defense pushed Buducnost outside and the long shots did not fall. Asvel came all the way back to tie the game at 23-23. Buducnost answered with 8 straight points and held on to lead by 6 at halftime.

Buducnost went back up by 8 three times in the third quarter, but Asvel answered each time to keep it close and head into the fourth quarter trailing only 56-50. Twice time in the last 10 minutes the visitors cut Buducnost’s lead to only 2, but Dragicevic extended the home team’s advantage to 64-57 with a coast-to-cost layup midway through the quarter. In the closing minutes, both teams struggled to score. With 90 seconds remaining, Simonovic extended the hosts' lead to 7, but the visitors answered to achieve just a 5-point deficit for the return leg.

Head Coaches

RADONJIC, DEJAN
KK Buducnost
"I have to express my great pleasure with the first win of this new Buducnost tonight against Asvel. It is always good to start the season with a victory and I am satisfied because of that. Our start was remarkable and we achieved a great advantage. But the quality that Asvel had caused us to finish the first half with only a 6-point lead. They kept the same rhythm until the end of the game. Maybe we missed playing calmly on the end. But despite everything, we are going to France to play a great game and to try to eliminate an important team. It would be a sensation in European basketball."
COLLET, VINCENT
Asvel Basket
"We started the game poorly and we have to play much stronger. Thankfully, after trailing 19-4, we started to play better defense. Step by step we got to 23-23, but again we fell behind. With less intensity, we allowed Buducnost too much aggression. We were glad to be down just 6 at halftime. In the second half we were much more aggressive. We scored more inside and got back in the game. The result gives hope to both teams. But I hope that we will play a different game at home on Friday night."

Players

KADZIULIS, GINTARAS
KK Buducnost
"We started the game really good. Everybody was very happy. We finished slowly, but still won. We are going to France to win the game. We will give our 100%, we will fight and I hope that we will win there."
ZIZIC, ANDRIJA
Asvel Basket
"It was very good, but very hard game. At the beginning our team played with a lot of nervousness and Buducnost punished us. But we caught our rhythm during the game and played at the level of the hosts. We are very aware that result doesn’t mean anything. Buducnost does not come to France for a friendly game. They will fight for victory because it is in their mentality. Both teams will do their best to advance to the next round."
