THE TAKE

One of the most dominant teams of the regular season, Unics Kazan (1-1), will try to get back on track at home against unbeaten Group J leader Hapoel Jerusalem (0-2) on Tuesday. Following a pair of consecutive home losses to Spanish teams - last week to Power Electronics Valencia after another to end the regular season - Unics will try its luck with another warm-country representative visiting ice-cold Kazan. Despite the Russian winter, expect fireworks from two of the best five scoring teams of the Eurocup season so far. Hapoel's strength is clearly in numbers: as in how many players can hurt opponents. Seven of its players are averaging between 7 and 15.3 points over the course of the Eurocup season, and one who is not among them, backup guard Yogev Ohayon, was the team's top performer in a 100-87 win over Galatasaray Cafe Crown last week. Unics is nearly as lethal and boasts three of the top 14 scorers - Marko Popovic, Kresimir Loncar and Terrell Lyday - still left in the competition. The challenge for Unics will be getting the extra defensive stops that ranked it fifth in points allowed during the regular season (70 ppg.) To do that, the hosts must deal with the likes of precocious Hapoel point guards Pooh Jeter and Yuval Naimy, shooters Sharon Shason and Tre Simmons, and big men Dijon Thompson, Brandon Hunter and Leo Lyons. Unics has been hurt in the Last 16 by plummeting three-point accuracy. After ranking fourth in the regular season by hitting 44% from downtown, the team has made just 28.2% in the first two Last 16 games. The emergence of Vladimir Veremeenko despite a home loss last week to Valencia is a good sign as the Unics rotation now numbers eight players. If the three-pionters are not falling again, they'll need Veremeenko's inside game to join those of Loncar and Maceij Lampe to compensate. A second home loss on a court where it was thought to have a great advantage would be difficult for Unics to overcome going forward, so expect the hosts to go all-out against a Hapoel team that does so every night, home or away, and the incentive of a 3-0 record to try to heat up in Kazan on Tuesday.

Quotes Head Coaches

CHOMICIUS, VALDEMARAS
Unics
"Hapoel is a very interesting team. They have a number of good American and Israeli players in their line-up, among them Sharon Shason, whom I personally know well as he used to play for Ural Great when I was coaching there. He was a young player then, while now he has became mature and is one of the leaders of Hapoel. Actually, the game will be a difficult one for us. We will play against the leaders of the group. And our main task in this game will be to cope with their fast offense and to bring disorder in their well-done defense. It will surely be not an easy task for us. We realise that and are treating this game very seriously."
GOODES, GUY
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We had four games in 10 days and it is hard, the mood in our team is high because we won all four games but we could not have got a tougher task than facing Kazan, especially after they lost at home. I had the feeling that Valencia will win there, I know Neven very well and I know his drive to success, After they lost to us at home they needed a win and they have got it against a great team. The group is open completely and we are facing the best teams in Europe in my opinion, each team of the Last 16 can be part of the Top 16 of the Euroleague. Kazan is a great offensive team and they have a lot of strength but we will do our best to go there and win."

Players

KUZYAKIN, ARTEM
Unics
"We expect a very close battle out of the coming game against Hapoel. As a matter of fact, Hapoel is a very strong team, and their recent victory over Power Electronics showed that better than words. Although we will play at home and will do our best to win. It will be important for us to concentrate on the game itself and to forget those unlucky games we’ve experienced the previous week."
KOKIA, URI
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We are enjoying our European games at the moment but we know that we have done nothing yet. We all dread Kazan mainly because of the history between the two teams but also because we know that they are capable of wining this competition. We believe that the next two games will be crucial for us, both against Kazan because Valencia will come to Jerusalem with intention to win and noting will be easy for us."
Marko Popovic - Unics KazanUnics climbed atop the Last 16 Group J standings by downing previously undefeated Hapoel Jerusalem 78-71 in Kazan, Russia on Tuesday. Both teams tie for first place in Group J, each with a 2-1 record, and will meet again for pivotal Game 4 in Jerusalem, Israel on February 23. Marko Popovic paced the winners with 26 points on 5-of-10 three-pointers and 7-of-7 free throws. Popovic had 18 points after the break, leading Unics to an important win. Terrell Lyday added 12 while Vladimir Veremeenko had 11 and 10 rebounds while Maciej Lampe pulled down 13 boards for Unics. Dijon Thompson and Kevinn Pinkney each had 13 points for Hapoel, that had 21 turnovers and were outrebounded by 40-32 tonight. Yuval Naimy added 12 while Uri Kokia got 10 for the guests, that led 17-21 late in the first quarter. Sharon Shason gave Hapoel ist last lead, 45-46, soon after the break. A 12-2 run that Igor Zamanskiy put Unics ahead for good, 57-48. Hapoel managed to get within 67-61 midway through the fourth quarter but an unstoppable Popovic struck twice from downtown and kept his temper at the foul lines to make Unics registered a key home win.

Unics had a strong start, as back-to-back dunks by Zamanskiy and Lampe gave the hosts a 4-0 lead. Naimy sank free throws and Pinkney added a layup but Artem Kuzyakin and Lyday kept Unics ahead at 8-4. Naimy kept pacing Hapoel with a triple but Lyday scored in penetration and added a shot from downtown for a 14-9 Unics lead. Thompson scored down low but Veremeenko quickly answered with free throws. Hapoel did not panic, however, a three-point play by Naimy ignited a 1-10 run highlighted by Leo Lyons' jumper for a 17-21 edge. Free throws by Popovic brought the hosts within 19-21 after 10 minutes. Zamanskiy sank free throws early in the second quarter but Shason answered from downtown for a 21-24 Hapoel edge. Popovic stepped up with consecutive three-pointers but a layup by Kokia and another triple by Shason kept the guests as close as 30-29. Saulius Stombergas sank a triple but Thompson dunked it and Kokia put Hapoel back ahead, 32-33. Unics found a go-to guy in Veremeenko, who singlehandedly put his team back ahead, 40-35. Tre Simmons sank a jumper and Pooh Jeter added free throws to keep Hapoel within 40-39 at halftime.

Kokia dunked it immediately after the break, had a big block on Zamanskiy and scored again to give Hapoel a 42-44 edge. Lampe rescued Unics with a layup-plus-foul but Shason soon gave Hapoel its last lead, 45-46. A put-back dunk by Kresimir Loncar ignited a 7-0 Unics run in which Popovic followed his third triple with a layup, good for a 52-46 edge. Simmons and Popovic traded baskets and a triple by Zamanskiy boosted the hosts' lead to 57-48. Pinkney tried to change things with free throws and soon added a jumper to get Hapoel within 59-52 after 30 minutes. Zamanskiy dunked it early in the fourth quarter and Lyday struck from downtown for a double-digit Unics lead, 64-52, making the guests call a much-needed timeout. Naimy scored in transition and Pinkney fed Thompson for a dunk to bring the guests back to life, 64-56. Stombergas nailed a big triple but Simmons and Pinkney brought the guests even closer, 67-61, with under 6 minutes left. Unics improved its defense right when it mattered, making Hapoel go scoreless for more than 2 minutes. Meanwhile, Popovic struck from downtown for a 70-61 lead with 3 minutes left. Hapoel kept trying but Popovic followed free throws with a big triple to seal the outcome.

Head Coaches

CHOMICIUS, VALDEMARAS
Unics
"It was a very difficult game for us. As a matter of fact, we have experienced two unlucky defeats the recent week from Power Electronics in the Eurocup and from Lokomotiv in the Russian League, which made us come across a very complicated psychological situation. We expected that the game against Hapoel would be very difficult and we took it seriously. The game met our expectations and I’m pleased, that we have won it. The game was very important for us. You can judge this upon the fact, that Loncar was injured, but he nevertheless played this game, trying to show his best."
GOODES, GUY
Hapoel Jerusalem
"The game can be split into two parts. In the first one we were focused on the game, showing good offense and safe defense, but in the second one we lost easy balls, acted not so aggressive in offense and not so safe in defense. We lost a good chance to defeat UNICS here in Kazan. The only positive thing about the result of the match, in my opinion, is the difference, which is not so large. I don’t mean to say, that it will be easy for us to play back those 7 points at home, but judging upon the way we were playing in the last quarter, the present result could have been more unpleasant for us."

Players

KUZYAKIN, ARTEM
Unics
"Hapoel Jerusalem is a very strong opponent, a fast athletic team, very well built. It was very difficult to stop them even here, at home. Although we did a good job in the third quarter and thanks to that, I believe, we managed to gain the victory."
OHAYON, YOGEV
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We started the game in a good way. We were quite good and aggressive in defense and made our opponents lose some balls. Unfortunately, the picture was completely different in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter, when we did not prevent UNICS from winning the game. I think Popovic and Lyday played a good game. We expect a difficult game in Jerusalem and we will try to play much better to win at home."
