THE TAKE

Zadar looks to remain in the hunt for a spot in the elimination round as it welcomes to Croatia Strasbourg in a Group I showdown. Coach Aleksandar Petrovic's Zadar team fell to 1-3 after a loss at Hapoel Jerusalem, which made a game-winning free throw with 0.4 seconds left. Center Todor Gecevski tallied 22 points and eight rebounds while point guard Corey Brewer added 18 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals. But Zadar's dynamic duo was not enough, especially as Brewer was a leading culprit of the Croatians' free throw struggles - 9-of-18 (50%) as a team - making just 3-of-8 from the foul line. And the Zadar defense did not do a good job stopping the Israelis, who shot 52% from the field. Petrovic needs to have his defense and foul shooting improve if the team wants to move to pull even with Strasbourg. Coach Eric Girard's French team improved to 2-2 with a comfortable victory at home over EiffelTowers Den Bosch. Strasbourg led by 16 points after one period and never looked back. Center Aaron Pettway recorded 21 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots while point guard Eddie Shannon scored 16 points and dished out 11 assists. All told, the French shot 60% from the field as five players scored in double figures. And Strasbourg did the deed defensively as well, holding EiffelTowers to 42% shooting. A road victory in Croatia would leave Girard's team just one game behind the Group I leader.

Zadar improved to 2-3 in Group I with a convincing 94-65 victory at home over Strasbourg. Shamell Stallworth led the way for the Croatian team with 25 points while Julius Johnson and Toni Prostran both tallied 12 points and Corey Brewer added 10. Zadar allowed just nine points in the second quarter in building a 49-28 lead at the break and never looked back. Key was a 20-6 run over the final seven minutes in which Stallworth tallied 9 points. Strasbourg dropped its record to 2-3 despite 13 points from Derrick Obasohan and 10 points from Elson Mendy. Rob Lewin added 5 points and 10 rebounds but it was not nearly enough for Strasbourg, which hosts Hapoel Jerusalem next week. Zadar welcomes to Croatia Unics Kazan with Group I still fully up-for-grabs.

Aaron Pettway opened the scoring for the guests with two foul shots. Todor Gecevski answered with a three-point play and then long balls by Brewer and Stallworth built a 13-4 Zadar lead early. Lewin trimmed the margin to 15-10 and it was down to 19-15 on Afik Nissim's three-pointer. But Gecevski converted another three-point play and the lead was 22-17 after one period. Andrej Stimac's basket started a 7-0 Zadar run to begin the second quarter and push the advantage over 10 points for the first time, 29-17 on Brewer's basket. Obasohan temporarily stopped the bleeding with the three-pointer for Strasbourg, but Stallworth answered with a long-ball of his own to spark a 20-6 run over the final seven minutes of the second period during which Stallworth scored 9 points and Brewer hit for 4 points. Stallworth's three-ball just before the buzzer made it 49-26 for Zadar at halftime. Obasohan started the second half with a three-pointer and his next basket trimmed the deficit to 52-35 midway through the third. But Zadar's Johnson made a three-pointer and another basket in a 12-0 spurt to re-establish a 64-35 advantage. Strasbourg attempted to come back and Elson Mendy's three-pointer and four foul shots in the final minute pulled the guests to with 69-44 after three periods. But Zadar did not stop in the fourth. Jure Lalic started the period with a three-pointer and Eddie Shannon answered with a basket. But the hosts ripped off a 16-0 run including three three-pointers by Prostran for an 88-46 lead with five minutes left. The advantage was up to 43 points on Pavle Marcinkovic's basket for a 92-49 lead with three minutes left. Zadar called off the dogs and Strasbourg finished on a 2-16 spurt to make the game somewhat more respectable.
