THE TAKE

There will be a sole leader in Group C as co-toppers Akasvayu Girona and Galatasaray Cafe Crown face off in Spain. Coach Pedro Martinez's Girona ran away from Asesoft to improve to 4-1. Akasvayu shot just 40% from the field but committed just 11 turnovers while forcing the Romanian club into 18 turnovers. Martinez's team allowed just nine points in the first quarter and led by 18 points at the break before cruising to the home victory. Point guard Arriel McDonald scored 14 points while three players scored 10 points. Martinez will have extra motivational material this week for his Spanish team as it was Galatasaray which beat Girona in Week One in Turkey. Akasvayu made just 10-of-17% from the foul line and shot just 45% from the field, proving the difference in the two-point Galatasaray victory. Galatasaray moved to 4-1 by handling Hemofarm at home. Guard Dee Brown collected 20 points and 8 assists and power forward Chris Owens had 21 points off the bench in the victory. All told, coach Murat Ozyer's Galatasaray shot 53%f from the field and held Hemofarm to 41% shooting. One of the keys to Galatasaray's Week One victory was getting power forward Jackson Vroman into foul trouble early as he was held to 2 points in 15 minutes. If Ozyer's troops can again take one of Girona's main weapons out of the action, Galatasaray may just move to 5-1. And Ozyer added some additional firepower this week, bringing in Turkis national team small forward Cenk Akyol on loan from Efes Pilsen.

Arriel McDonald - Akasvayu Girona Akasvayu Girona managed to make up for the Week 1 loss against Galatasaray Cafe Crown as it blasted the Turkish team at home on Tuesday by 89-78. In the first half, Galatasaray had all the options as both teams took turns in the lead, but in the second half, an 11-0 run to start the third period left things much clearer for Akasvayu. The team from Girona is now 5-1 in the Group C standings to lead alone while Galatasaray drops to 4-2 and ties with Hemofarm Stada for second place. Fernando San Eemeterio led the winners with 19 points, Arriel McDonald added 15 and Jarod Stevenson had 14. For Galatasaray, Dee Brown posted 24 points with 6 of 10 triples, and Charles Gaines had 16 and Chris Owens nailed 14.

Chris Owens showed the way early for Galatasaray with a 4-6, but soon Akasvayu reacted with an 8-0 burst led by Fernando San Emeterio and his 7 points. The Turkish team reacted soon however and they made it 18-17 as Dee Brown was now in command for Galatasaray. Jarod Stevenson and Predrag Drobnjak stepped up for the hosts and Arriel McDonald joined in with a three but Brown copied him in the reply to make it 28-23 after 10 minutes. In the second quarter Galatasaray took command in offense and pushed hard behind in defense with two straight triples by Robert Hite and Murat Kaya. The guests kept Akasvayu stuck at 12 points in the quarter and got a 38-44 lead but in the last play of the first half, Stevenson scored for a 40-44 halftime score. Things looked brighter for Akasvayu at the start of the second half thanks ato an 11-0 run capped by McDonald. Brown appeared with three triples in a row to tie at 53-53, but McDonald had his own three to put Girona in command again by 61-55 and by the end of three the hosts were dominating again by 10 points, 65-55. In the starting minutes of the final period Galatasaray tried hard to come back but triples by Branko Cvetkovic allowed the hosts to build a 15-point gap, 79-64, in minute 36.

Head Coaches

MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Akasvayu Girona
"I'm very satisfied of the team's work made during all the game. Defending we haven't been very assertive during the first part, although in the second part we really did a great job. The next game that we play against Hemofarm it would be really important to win because it would help us to mantain the first place, even though it's going to be a tough game, we have to be prepared and give the best of us."
OZYER, MURAT
Galatasaray Cafe Crown
"Although we played with intensity on the second half, there was only one thing we couldn't manage which is we could not organize offense very well and therefore Girona scored easily, especially in the third quarter."

Players

STEVENSON, JAROD
Akasvayu Girona
"It was a good game for us, we are in first place so it's great. We beat one of the best teams in the group. It wasn't easy but we made it. It was a game for the first place and we won, but we have to bear in mind that they are the second team after us. Let's hope to have a good place on the next round."
HITE, ROBERT
Galatasaray Cafe Crown
"We knew they were a great and tough team to beat. They played really hard on the third quarter and we couldn't follow them, they broke the game from that point until the end."
