THE TAKE

Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas can clinch at least fourth place and stay atop Group G with a victory at home over BC Kalev/Cramo. Coach Salvador Maldonado's Gran Canaria improved to 5-2 with a solid victory at Ludwigsburg. The Spanish team out-scored Ludwigsburg 36-20 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Gran Canaria held Ludwigsburg to 42% shooting for the game and forced 19 turnovers while hitting 23-of-30 free throws to Ludwigsburg's 8-of-16. Shooting guard Carl English scored 21 points and center Joel Freeland added 15 points and 5 rebounds for Maldonado's team, which also got double figure scoring from the bench by shooting guards Sergio Perez, Marcus Norris and Roberto Guerra. Gran Canaria also added more depth in bringing in forward Nik Caner-Medley. Grupo Dunas is even in first place with Asvel at 5-2 - one game ahead of Panionios and two up on a pair of fourth placed teams. And Maldonado's men will be looking to sweep the series with Kalev/Cramo after building a big lead at halftime and holding on to win on the road in Week Three. Kalev/Cramo committed 20 turnovers in that game and cannot afford the same performance if it wants to stay in the running for the elimination round. Coach Veselin Matic's team dropped its third straight game, losing at home against Asvel. The Estonian side turned the ball over 22 times and shot just 43% for the game while allowing Asvel to shoot 58% from the floor. Center Travis Reed was one of the few weapons for Matic with 17 points and 10 rebounds while power forward Kristjan Kangur added 15 points and 5 rebounds in a losing cause. Kalev/Cramo desperately need a victory on the road to even its record at 4-4 as it can pull into a three-way tie for third place with two games left.

Sitapha Savane - Gran Canaria Grupo DunasSitapha Savane, Roberto Guerra and Carl English scored 12 points apiece to help Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas beat BC Kalev/Cramo 80-75 in come-from-behind style on Tuesday night in Group G. Gran Canaria improved to 6-2, shares the group lead and is all but in the elimination rounds. Gran Canaria will have its ticket punched if KK Bosna beats Siauliai on Wednesday in a game that was postponed due to weather related complications. Meanwhile BC Kalev/Cramo dropped to 3-5 and its hopes of advancing have been significantly reduced. Gran Canaria was down 64-71 with five minutes left in the game, but using its accuracy from beyond the arc, was able to mount a successful comeback. English also dished 6 assists and Savane had 8 rebounds for Gran Canaria, while Kornel David added 9 points. Travis Reed had 24 points and 9 rebounds for BC Kalev/Cramo, Mateo Kedzo bagged 13 and Howard Frier 9.

Gran Canaria started at its best behind English and raced out to a 20-4 lead. But Reed scored 9 points in a row to help BC Kalev to get back to 22-13. David and Mario Fernandez fueled the hosts to make it 28-19 before Frier hit from long distance and fixed the score at 28-22 at the end of the first quarter. English gave again a double figure margin to Gran canaria, 32-22, early in the second quarter, but Kedzo and Reed scored the next 7 points to keep it close. The game continued with another run of the hosts to go to 45-32 on a short jumper of Marcus Norris, before Fernandez from the foul line made it 49-37 at halftime. The hosts seemed to be in control of the match, but Gregor Arbet cut the cap to 52-44 after four minutes. Jim Moran pushed Gran Canaria to be a 60-48 lead, however Kedzo and Reed fueled an amazing 2-19 run for the guests, bridging the last two quarters, to put BC Kalev ahead 62-67 after Bojan Pelkic scored a mid-range jumper early in the fourth quarter. Reed extended the difference to 64-71 at the midway point of the quarter, but pushed by the crowd, Roberto Guerra sounded the charge from downtown to excite his team. Norris copied him to tie the score at 71-71 and with less than three minutes left, again from beyond the arc, English gave a 76-73 advantage to Gran Canaria. Tanel Sokk and Guerra exchanged two-pointers and then Victor Baldo and Savane sealed the home team win from the foul line.
