THE TAKE

Lukoil Academic looks to return to its winning ways with the elimination round looming as its hosts Pau-Orthez in its Group H finale. Head coach Zeljko Lukajic's Lukoil suffered its second straight defeat, losing at Kyiv to drop to 5-4 - though it booked its spot in the next round. The Bulgarian side was out-shot 45%-51% and watched Kyiv make 20-of-27 foul shots compared to just 12-of-16 for Lukoil. Lukajic's team was a two-man show as playmaker Willie Deane collected 30 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists and power forward Pero Antic amassed 20 points and 12 rebounds. But no other Lukoil player scored more than 8 points in a losing effort. Lukajic would like to see the scoring more balanced out - as was the case in Lukoil's Week 5 victory at Pau, where four players scored in double figures and two others had at least 8 points. Lukoil will remain in third place regardless if it wins or loses. Pau-Orthez meanwhile is just looking to put another positive to the end of its tough ULEB Cup season. Head coach Laurent Mopsus's French club knocked off ASK Riga at home to improve to 2-7 and snap a six-game losing streak. Pau was out-shot 44%-46% but held Riga to just 3-of-14 (21%) from long range and made 11-of-15 free throws to 7-of-16 for ASK. Center Jeleel Akindele led Orthez with 14 points and 13 rebounds while point guard Maxiliano Stanic tallied 15 points and 7 assists in a winning effort. After all the struggles that the club has gone through this season, a second straight win would be a nice ending to the campaign.

Willie Deane shined bright as Lukoil Academic Sofia cruised into the ULEB Cup Last 32 with a 106-89 win over Pau-Orthez. Deane went off for 27 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting, 8 assists and 4 steals as the Bulgarian champs finished the regular season with a 6-4 record, good for third place in Group H. Meanwhile Pau-Orthez finished at the bottom of the group standings with a 2-8 mark. The hosts used two big runs, a 12-0 charge in the second quarter and then opening the third 15-2 to break the game open, giving Academic a big enough margin to manage the game the rest of the way. Pero Antic collected 22 points with 9 of 9 on two-point shooting, Larry O'Bannon added 16 and Riste Stefanov bagged 14. Antwayne Robinson led Pau-Orthez with 16 points, Max Stanic nailed 12 and Ludovic Vaty added 10.

Back-to-back mid range jumpers posted by Tencho Banev and Antic pushed Lukoil Academic ahead 6-3 early in the first quarter, but Robinson soon put Pau-Orthez in front 7-8. Chadar Chostov made it 14-8 at the midway point of the quarter and then Antic added a basket before 7 points from Stanic put Pau ahead 16-17. Antic capped a 7-0 run for Academic to go ahead 23-17. Antoine Mendy reacted for Pau, but Stefanov with a pull-up jumper gave the first double-digit margin to Lukoil, 29-19 as the first quarter finished. Cedric Ferchaud kept Pau-Orthez alive, getting within 29-24 opening the second quarter, but Antic seemed to be unstoppable and with the help of Todor Stoykov and O'Bannon, amassed a 12-0 run to go up 41-26. Jeff Trepagnier stopped a scoreless run for Pau and nailed a triple, but Deane established the best margin yet for Academic, 50-35, with 90 seconds left till halftime. Antonio Davis made 2 free throws to cut the cushion to 54-41 at halftime. Shaun Fein from downtown tried to wake up the guests staring the third quarter, but O'Bannon answered by converting a three-point-play. Then Stanic reduce the margin to 60-51 from mid range. Deane highlighted a 15-2 run with 11 points to make it 75-53 midway through the third period and Stefanov fixed it at 84-65 at the end of the third quarter. The hosts extended the difference to 93-67 after three minutes through Petroslav Zafirov. The teams played the last minutes to entertain the crowd as Academic sealed its qualification with an amazing performance.

"We couldn´t manage to take control of the rhythm of the game. The team of Lukoil has very strong offense and proved this fact one more time tonight. They also stopped our game so we couldn´t play our way. They were the better team. Right now we have problems with our performance in the French League and we are concentarted mainly in that. I hope we will find the right way. Until then we will keep on working hard."
