THE TAKE

Artland Dragons and ASK Riga both look to return to their winning ways with a second victory in Group H when they meet in Germany. The ULEB Cup debutants Artland were battered in a 44-point loss at Lukoil Academic. Head coach Chris Fleming's German team shot a nightmare 35% from the field while allowing the Bulgarians to shoot 62% and out-rebound them 45-24. One of the few bright spots for the Dragons was 11 points and four rebounds from small forward Terrance Thomas. Point guard Lamont McIntosh scored 11 points as well but made just 4-of-14 shots. A return to their home floor will help Fleming's men, who should bounce back in fine form. ASK Riga meanwhile travel to the German province looking to rebound from a road loss against BC Kyiv. Head coach Ramunas Butautas' Latvians managed only 37% shooting while allowing Kyiv to hit 52% from the field. Riga also missed 13 of 25 foul shots (48%). But Butautas can look positively upon his team committing just seven turnovers while forcing 16. But the offense struggled as power forward Aerick Sanders failed to find his form (3-of-11 shooting) while small forward Dwayne Broyles and shooting guard Sandis Buskevics combined for just 2-of-10 from long distance. That will have to improve if the Latvians want to pick up their second win in the group.

Artland Dragons bounced back from a horrible loss last week to improve to 2-1 in Group H, holding on for a 73-71 victory at home over ASK Riga. John Goldsberry made three free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for the home team, which was beaten by 44 points last week at Lukoil Academic. Adam Chubb led the way for Artland with 20 points, while Lamont McIntosh added 15 points and Jan Rohdewald had 11 points. The Dragons next host Benneton Tamoil. Riga fell to 1-2 in Group H despite four players scoring in double figures, led by 13 each from Aerick Sanders and Raitis Grafs. The Latvians were outrebounded 31-21 and were unable to take advantage of 21 Artland turnovers. Riga next will welcome Pau-Orthez to the Latvian capital.

The game started with both sides nervous and Sanders got the guests on the scoring board first in the fourth minute. Riga led 8-9 until McIntosh hit a three-pointer. And McIntosh's basket gave Artland a 15-13 after one period. Dwayne Broyles evened the game with the first points of the second quarter. Another Broyles basket pushed the lead to 15-23. The Dragons finally got on the board in the second through Chubb. And that basket started a 6-0 run to pull within 21-25. Sanders pushed the advantage back up to 23-29, but Chubb scored five straight points and Terrance Thomas' two foul shots gave Artland the lead, 30-29. Sandis Valters drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Riga a 32-34 advantage going to the locker rooms. Darious Hall knotted the game to start the second half and Dirk Madrich knocked down a big three-pointer for a 39-36 lead. But Sandis Buskevics would answer with a long ball of his own as Riga regained the lead 41-43. Sanders' basket pushed the cushion to 48-52 only to see Rohdewald drain a three-pointer to give Artland the lead 53-52 after three quarters. Rohdewald struck again from downtown to open the fourth (56-52). Buskevics' three-ball cut the deficit to 58-57 and it was 62-57 after two Chubb foul shots. Two McIntosh free throws made it 67-61 with two minutes left. Valters cut it to 67-64 but Matt Freije knocked down a trey for a 70-64 lead. Broyles made it 70-68 and John Goldsberry made just one of two foul shots only to see Broyles miss two from the charity stripe. Goldsberry knocked down two more free throws to make it 73-68. Valters made it a one-possession game with a three-pointer and Riga sent Earl Rowland to the foul line. Rowland missed both but Broyles missed his desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Artland Dragons
"We had respect for ASK Riga. They played really well in their first ULEB Cup game this season and even better in the Baltic League. I am happy that we won this game, although we made some mistakes. I don’t know if it is because we are tired, but we had some easy turnovers. We were glad to play at home, otherwise Riga could have won the game."
BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
ASK Riga
"We knew that we were playing a strong team and that the Dragons were playing very well this year. We were ready and we knew a lot about their players, but this was not our best game. We have problems with injured players and we lost too many rebounds. We made too many mistake in offense, too."

Players

CHUBB, ADAM
Artland Dragons
"I am very glad that we won this game. I knew that we could beat these guys. And if we would have played with the same fire we play in the German League, we would have had an easier win. We played with more self-confidence, but not so self-confident as in the German League. I think our team play was the key to the victory tonight."
