Caja Laboral returns home after a tough loss in its opener to entertain last week’s biggest winner, Zalgiris Kaunas, at the newly-renovated Fernando Buesa Arena. Laboral led after three quarters and lost by just 4 at the champs last week. Meanwhile Zalgiris partied en route to a 28-point victory over Cedevita. Laboral, still with a limited rotation due to injury, will try to use its spectacular home court to jumpstart its season, while Zalgiris looks for its first 2-0 start since 2005. Caja Laboral coach Dusko Ivanovic stuck with an eight-man rotation for the bulk of last week’s game, since injuries left him without center Tibor Pleiss and playmaker Taylor Rochestie. It looks like more of the same for Laboral, which will need to contend with an extremely deep Zalgiris side, which only added to the team with point guard Ibby Jaaber, who could debut this week. Zalgiris coach Joan Plaza had 11 players on the floor for at least 10 minutes last week. Both teams feature tough and versatile inside options. Laboral center Maciej Lampe is a noted low-post scorer, forward Nemanja Bjelica can stretch the floor with his shooting range and with Andres Nocioni playing some time at the “4,” Laboral can use a smaller and quicker lineup. Zalgiris has its inside presences in Paulius Jankunas and Darjus Lavrinovic, while Ksistof Lavrinovic and Mario Delas can both rebound and shoot from outside. Zalgiris will hope to contain former All-Euroleague small forward Fernando San Emeterio with the lengthy Mindaugas Kuzminskas and the physical Tremmell Darden. Sharpshooter Brad Olseson is a prime Laboral weapon, especially with Thomas Huertel feeding him the ball. Carlos Cabezas shores up the Laboral backcourt. Zalgiris counters with Jaaber, Oliver Lafayette, Marko Popovic and Rimas Kaukenas. Zalgiris shot and rebounded well last week, but also committed 19 turnovers, something that would be tough to overcome on the road. Zalgiris gains important road win at Caja Laboral Zalgiris Kaunas remained unbeaten in Turkish Airlines Euroleague by pulling out a 71-77 win over Caja Laboral in Vitoria on Friday night. The victory gives Zalgiris a 2-0 record for the first time since 2005, and a tie with E7 Emporio Armani for the first place in Group C, while Caja Laboral remains winless. The Lithuanian champs used a 0-9 run in the third quarter to open up a 14-point lead and never trailed again, but needed some clutch shooting and a defensive stands in the final 30 seconds to secure victory. Tremmell Darden led all scorers with 17 points while Rimantas Kaukenas added 15 in the winning effort. Oliver Lafayette netted 12, Marko Popovic 11 and Darjus Lavrinovic scored 10 points for the victors. Brad Oleson led Laboral with 13 points on 4-of-7 three-point shooting. Andres Nocioni also scored 13 and Maciej Lampe chipped in 12 for Caja Laboral in defeat.
