THE TAKE

Turk Telekom welcomes Spirou Basket to the Turkish capital in Week 2 action as both teams aim for a win to get back in the thick of Group E after suffering tough losses on opening day. Spirou fell on its home court to Bizkaia Bilbao Basket 68-80, while Turk Telekom came within 2 points of pulling off a road victory at Spartak Saint Petersburg. Both squads got big games from their guards last week, so this contest should highlight a battle between their respective backcourts. Turk Telekom is lead by Demond Mallet, who had 19 points – including 3 triples – to go along with 7 assists versus Spartak. Mallet is supported by Tutku Acik, a perimeter player, who also knows how to distribute the ball. The Telekom guards will face off against Spirou’s Jonathan Tabu and Justin Hamilton. Tabu had a monster night, albeit in a losing effort, versus a very talented Bilbao backcourt ending up with 22 points, 7 assists and 5 boards. The Mallet vs. Tabu duel could be the focal point of this clash, but their sidekicks could make the difference if both big guns both have high-scoring nights. Besides having the advantage of playing before it home fans, Turk Telekom can also count on an intimidating front court with multiple options for Mallet and Acik to look for either in the low post or on the wing. Center Huseyin Besok is an effective scorer, while forwards Andre Owens and Erwin Dudley add both muscle and point production. But the home side saves perhaps its most explosive player to come off the bench in a sixth-man role. Forward Lamayne Wilson led his team in scoring in Week 1 with 22 points to go with 4 boards and 3 assists. Spirou is no slouch at forward though either. Dwayne Broyles and Wes Wilkinson combined for 24 points versus Bilbao, and sniper Nick Jacobson has proven to be a reliable backup to spell the starters. At center, the visitors look to Jure Lalic and defensive ace Andre Riddick. Neither had huge a nigh in Week 1, so expect Spirou to try and get more mileage out of their big men this time around in order to give its attack more balance between its inside and outside players. Spirou will need to get big performances from Tabu and co. so as to stay close through the first three quarters and have a chance to pull out a win in the game’s final stanza.

Huseyin Besok - Turk TelekomTwo teams that lost the Eurocup opener in Group E, Turk Telekom and Spirou Basket, faced off on Tuesday and when the dust settled, hosting Turk Telekom emerged victoriosu thanks to a 91-67 final score. A wild first half for the hosts with as many as 12 three-pointers, bossted them to high leads that Spirou never really threatened despite a strong try starting the second half. Now, Spirou Basket drops to 0-2 in the group and is last, while Turk Telekom improves to 1-1. Lamayne Wilson led all scorers with 25 points with 5 of 8 triples, Bekir Yarangume added 24 including 6 of 8 threes, Tutku Acik nailed 12 and Huseyin Besok had 10 points and 7 boards for Turk Telekom. For Spirou Basket, Dwayne Broyles scored 19 and two players joined him in double digits with 11 each: Wes Wilkinson and Nick Jacobson.

A starting 5-0 including a three by Demond Mallet launched Turk Telekom in the lead early, and Huseyin Besok joined the party to make it 7-0 until Jure Lalic hit a fre ethrow to get Spirou Basket going. But Bekir Yarangume and Besok himself nailed straight threes that put a 16-1 on the scoreboard only 4 minutes after tip-off. Jonathan Tabu stopped the bleeding for the guests with a new free throw, and afterwards he finally scored from the field to make it 16-4. Tutku Acik kept the three-pointer steamroller going for Turk Telekom, to put already a 20-point margin by minute 9, 24-4. Nick Jacobson closed the first quarter with a bucket for a 24-6 score. Jacobson himself started the scoring race in the second quarter for Spirou, but Erwin Dudley quickly shut him up for Turk Telekom and Yarangume soon added a new three plus a dunk for a 31-9. Jacobson finally landed a three for Spirou but Lamayne Wilson now scored three straight threes to make it 40-18. Jure Lalic seemed to wake up to give some air to the guests but Turk Telekom now played at ease with the big cushion and reached the halftime leading by 48-24 after an unbelievable 12 of 21 from the arc, and also a 6 of 11 from the field.

Jonathan Tabu - Spirou BasketTurk Telekom started the second half in the same way it finished the first, blasting two more bombs from downtown while Jacosbson was, again also, the main scorer for Spirou Basket in these first minutes of the third period. Tabu and Broyles finally hit Spirou's second and third bombs of the night back-to-back for a 56-36 Turk Telekom edge. The Spirou run climbed to 0-9 when Justin Hamilton had a three-point play for 56-39, but Acik scored twice from the line to keep the hosts going. Broyles was all fired up however and scored four straight points to make it a 10-19 Spirou burst since the start of three. Turk's beat ally now were the free throws, when they had not shot a single one in the entire first half. When Wilson and Serkan Erdogan had straight baskets, the score was again a 66-47 Turk Telekom lead. The hosts had recovered the pulse of the game and after 30 minutes they were up by 75-49 with no problems. Yarangume had his sixth three for 78-51, and when the difference reached the 31 points, 82-51, the outcome of the game was clear enough.

Head Coaches

OZYER, MURAT
Turk Telekom
"We lost our first game and we knew that the game against Spirou Basket was very important. It was a big morale boost to win tonight. With this leadership on court, I think that the next game against Bilbao Basket won't be so hard for us. I want to congratulate my players because of their performance. We faced a strong opponent today but our long-distance shots went in tonight and that was the main reason of our win. We had a very balanced attack and we were forced to defend hard, but the result of that work was a valuable win."

Players

YARANGÜME, BEKIR
Turk Telekom
"We started off really well and that allowed us to build even bigger margins until the end of the game. We won comfortably thanks to our threes. The next game against Bilbao Basket will be very important for the outcome of this group."
