Two teams looking to save their ULEB Cup seasons meet Tuesday in Bamberg, Germany, where Brose Baskets hosts AEK Athens in a do-or-die game for both teams. Brose Baskets (1-5) and AEK (2-4) were both in the Euroleague last year, but have failed to bring much of what they learned in the continent's premier competition to the floor this year. AEK held on to defeat Bamberg 82-76 when they met last month behind a season-high 17 points from Christos Tapoutos. In fact, Tapoutos has combined for 17 points in the other four games he's played aside from that one. Last week Jasmin Perkovic had 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting to lead AEK to a critical 70-58 win against Gran Canaria. He had averaged 6.2 points in the previous 4 games but stepped up when the going got tough. Brose Baskets lost its third in a row last week 93-83 at Sluc Nancy despite a season-best 17 points from Darren Fenn. Bamberg (69.5 ppg.) and AEK (71.2 ppg.) are second- and third-bottom, respectively in scoring this season. Brose is also last in three-point shooting (26.54%). With Fenn (11.4 ppg.) and Zelly Wesson (14.2 ppg., 7.2 rpg.) holding fort inside, the competition's co-assists-leader DeJuan Collins (14.5 ppg., 5.5 apg., 2.2 spg.) will have to create opportunities for teammates Adam Harrington and Vince Yarbrough to take advantage of and fire in some threes. Forward Nestoras Kommatos (11.8 ppg.) and guard Iioannis Gkagkaloudis (10.3 ppg.) are the top scorers on an inconsistent AEK side that has seen a different player lead it in scoring each week. The Brose Baskets defense kept AEK without a basket for over five minutes in the second quarter as it built a 41-32 halftime lead.
