THE TAKE

Chorale Roanne hosts Brose Baskets Bamberg on Wednesday in a crucial Group C showdown with Top 16 implications. Roanne snapped a five-game losing streak last week with a big home win over Lottomatica to improve to 2-5 and is now just one game behind Partizan Igokea for fifth place and a spot in the Top 16. However Bamberg ended a five-game slide the week before and is ready to make a second-half challenge for a spot in the next stage. Roanne’s only other win before Roma came when the French champs edged the German champs 61-64 on a Brion Rush buzzer-beating three-pointer on opening night. The two teams are polar opposites in terms of basketball style. Roanne plays an attractive and free-flowing attacking game, with playmaker Marc-Antoine Pellin pushing the pace and league-leading scorer Marc Salyers and shooting guard Rush able to shine. Meanwhile Bamberg head coach Dirk Bauermann employs an iron defense, whose 70.1 points allowed per game is tied for third best in the league. Players like power forward Ademola Okulaja and guard Steffen Hamann power the Bamberg defense, while Demond Greene and Predrag Suput are important to the team’s offense. One of the game’s most important head-to-head matchups could take place at power forward, where Bamberg veteran Okulaja will try to contain Salyers. He managed the last time, holding Salyers to a season-low 14. However Salyers is averaging 25.2 points at home this season. Another crucial duel is in the backcourt, where either Rush will take aim at Hamann and Pellin will attack Greene. Pellin, the league-leader in assists, registered 13 last week as his play continues to improve game by game. In the paint Bamberg uses the duo of low-post threat Darren Fenn and the defensive-minded Chris Ensminger, along with the aid of rookie Tim Ohlbrecht, who’ll challenge Pape Badiane. Small forward Adam Hess of Roanne and Suput could also play key roles with their all-around talents. The Bamberg backourt, particularly Hamann and Mark Dickel, will play a huge role in trying to slow down the pace and take Roanne’s trio of Pellin, Rush and Salyers out of their rhythm. If the visitors are successful, they have a real chance to score a key road win and climb back into the fight for the Top 16. However if Pellin can push the ball, Roanne will be the favorite to win and make a serious move in the standings, while sending a blow to Bamberg’s hopes. Either way, it promises to be an exciting encounter, just as their last meeting was, between two teams knowing that this game could affect the rest of their season.

Quotes Head Coaches

BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
“This is absolutely a must-win game for us. I don't know if it's a must-win for them. But we really need to win this game. I don't think we need any extra motivation. But we have to bounce back. A loss is a loss. As a player when you're losing pretty badly, you feel that. And you start thinking they're better than you. And that's always hard. It hurts the confidence a bit as well. But we just have to deal with it. It's not going to be easy. I'm not going to beat around the bush. We lost to Barcelona and then we lost to Alba Berlin. And we played our worst game of the year. So, we're struggling a bit. We're a bit sick and banged up and four of our national team guys played this summer and they're beginning to feel it. But this is too important a game to make excuses. No one is going to feel sorry for us. We just need to go out and get the job done.”

“This is definitely a must-win game for us. But I think they feel the same way. So it's really going to be a battle and come down to a matter of wills – who wants it more. Obviously we have to take care of the ball better. That's the biggest issue for us. And we have to get back to the way we played against Fenerbahce and Belgrade. Those were our two best games and if we can play that way again, I think we have a good chance of winning. We're just excited about going down there and playing some good basketball.”
Marc salyers - Chorale Roanne Chorale Roanne registered its second consecutive win and rejoined the Top 16 race in Group C by edging Brose Baskets Bamberg 84-81 in Clermont Ferrand, France on Wednesday. Steffen Hamann - Brose BasketsRoanne improved its defense early in the second quarter and kept running its offense through Salyers. His offensive rebound allowed Pierric Poupet to give Roanne a 22-20 edge. Bamberg had been scoreless for more than 3 minutes now, while Rush sank a three-pointer. Bamberg opted to use twin point guards to find better shots and Hamann took over with a jump hook. Badiane found his first points on a tip-in, making Bamberg call timeout at 27-22. Garrett rescued the guests with a fast break layup that Poupet matched with foul shots. Suput shined with a big baseline jumper, as Roanne struggled to get its stars involved now. Poupet hit more free throws that Ensminger erased with a smooth reserve layup that Garrett followed with a driving basket to get Bamberg within 31-30. Ademola Okulaja had a big block on William Soliman, and then followed a tip-in with a fast break layup in a 0-6 run that Ensminger capped with free throws for a 33-36 Bamberg edge at halftime.

Rush stepped up with a big basket right after the break but Bamberg kept its momentum going. Okulaja quickly answered while Fenn added a three-point play to boost the guests' margin to 35-41. Rush sank back-to-back six-meter shots while Salyers made a free throw to get Roanne as close as 51-52. Ensminger kept pacing Bamberg with an up-and-under layup but Rush and Adam Hess buried respective triples to complete the hosts' comeback, 57-54. Hamann joined the three-point shootout to tie the game again, 57-57, after 30 minutes.

Brion Rush - Chorale RoanneGarrett nailed a corner three-pointer to put Bamberg back ahead, 57-60. Hamann beat the shot clock with a layup that Rush erased with a tip-in while Salyers dunked it off a steal to get Roanne within 61-62. Garrett took over with another triple but Soliman stepped up with a power basket for a 63-65 Roanne deficit with over 4 minutes to go. Hamann stroke from downtown but Salyers sank an unbelievable three-pointer to get Roanne within 66-68. Badiane tied the game with free throws but Ensminger shined with another jump hook and Garrett added a power layup to give Bamberg a 68-72 edge with 2 minutes to go. Head Coaches

CHOULET, JEAN-DENYS
Chorale Roanne
"It was a big win because we had problems with a couple players, Ron Hale and Laurent Cazalon, who couldn't play. So we had to play with seven or eight players, and a couple of them had a tough first half, which made it hard on them after that. But we fought to the end and had a great last three minutes, which made it a great win. Bamberg play solid defense, but we did so good at end, and I'm happy with that. That's the first time we've been up by three and I decided to foul. Usually we don't foul, because I prefer to play defense and trust in that. But this time I did it for the first time and it worked good. I don't think I'll do it again, but it was a good move this time. Now we've got to play against Partizan, and we'll have no pressure."

Players

SALYERS, MARC
Chorale Roanne
"It was one of those things where it came down to the end of the game, and in the last two minutes, everything had to go perfect for us - and did. It was their game to lose, really, and we just did what we had to. We have to wait until after next game to start talk about a Top 16 race. But if we can go to Belgrade and get a win, we can seriously start to think about it. For now, though, it's just two wins in a row. There's a long way to go."
