THE TAKE

A make-or-break battle to win Group C takes place in the Russian capital where CSKA Moscow hosts Caja Laboral on Thursday night. The two teams are tied atop the standings with a 7-2 record, so the winner will finish first and earn top-seed privileges in the Top 16 draw. Laboral has the tie-break advantage with Maccabi Electra, which is third at 6-3, so it will be second if it loses in Moscow. CSKA, however, will finish third if it loses and Maccabi beats Maroussi. CSKA released center Courtney Sims earlier this week and his replacement, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, was not inscribed in time to face Laboral. With Matjaz Smodis still sidelined, Sasha Kaun will be CSKA's starting center, with Viktor Khryapa playing alongside at power forward due to his versatility and all-around defensive skills. Khryapa notched his first career double-double last week when he grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. Nikita Kurbanov, Dimitriy Sokolov and Andrei Vorontsevich round out the hosts' frontcourt, offering depth and many options on offense. Vorontsevich can test his shooting range against elite bomber Mirza Teletovic. Kaun and Sokolov have for a key battle against All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter. Khryapa faces an important matchup against Laboral power forward Lior Eliyahu, who thrives in the transition game. Stanko Barac adds size and good hands off the guests' bench. The point guard battle will be interesting, as CSKA runs its offense through J.R. Holden and former Laboral playmaker Zoran Planinic. With Sean Singletary questionable for this game, Pau Ribas will see most of the minutes against Planinic due to his size and quickness. Marcelo Huertas will use his explosiveness and intensity against a great defender in Holden. Former Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas could be back for CSKA alongside Trajan Langdon on the wings. Victor Keyru will step in if Siskauskas cannot play, while Anton Ponkrashov offers versatility and explosiveness at both guards. Langdon is ready to test his shooting skills against Carl English, as Brad Oleson is sidelined for one more week. Walter Herrmann is set for a key battle against Khryapa and Siskauskas at forward. Fernando San Emeterio will play a major role for Laboral due to his versatility, quickness and driving skills. Laboral must find Splitter down low and open the court for English and San Emeterio if it wants to win Group C. CSKA must be its usual self in defense and rely on Langdon, Khryapa and Holden. Expect nothing but a major showdown between a pair of serious Final Four contenders this Thursday.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"Our opponents will have a full roster and they arrive in Moscow in the middle of great winning streak. On the other hand, we also improved and we want to take first place, which is at stake. Caja Laboral plays very aggressive basketball with lots of contact. They strive in using opponents’ mistakes. So our task will be to control the rhythm of the game, to minimize the number of turnovers, to stop their fast break and to be very active on the glass. It is important that we also do not have injured players so everything depends on us."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"It’s a game that will decide who will win the group and who will be a top seed for the Top 16. They are a great team, they beat us in Vitoria, so I hope that experience has taught us the things we need to do to win. We were surprised by how hard they played in the first game. Sometimes we look like we are shocked by the opponents when they play hard, so we must to focus on having a good approach to this game. We want to win and we want to take the first place of the group, but looking at the potential teams we could meet in the Top 16 in any of these two options, I think there is no big difference in terms if difficulty."

Players

KAUN, SASHA
CSKA Moscow
"Caja Laboral did not have a couple of guys during our meeting in Vitoria, so I expect them to play stronger. The game means a lot in the fight for the top position in our group and I am sure it will be tough and interesting. Still we will play on our home court, so I hope our fans will provide us with some extra energy and help us win."
SPLITTER, TIAGO
Caja Laboral
"It’s a key game for both teams, as we are going to play for first place in the group. They will play at home and be very motivated, so we need a very good performance to have some chances. They managed to grab the win in Vitoria because they played more physical than we did, they fought really hard and that made the difference. Their roster is deep, they can count on high-level players, so we will need a perfect game to be able to beat them there. It’s always very difficult to win in Moscow. Every player enjoys this stage of the competition, where the key games come up. Everything goes faster and every game is a crucial one."

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"It is very difficult to speak after this kind of game. In my opinion, our team played a fair game and showed real character winning in the end when it looked like it was impossible to win. Caja Laboral shot very well in the first half, but nobody is able to shot that good through all 40 minutes. We dominated almost all game, but in the end we were tired, we made a number of unforced errors and lost Victor Khryapa to 5 fouls. The value of the game, the game of half-year period was too great to let the young players decide the result. So we had to use only six players. This win was landmark for us. After all the critics we heard in the fall, CSKA still finished in the first place in the Euroleague Group C. But this is only half of the battle. The main games are ahead for us"
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"We started the game good, stretched CSKA’s defense and got some open shots. We were able to get a good lead, but in the second half our opponents returned to the game playing better defense and using Langdon’s shots. We were a bit asleep after the break and were surprised by CSKA’s percentages from the perimeter. The hosts were ahead and we weren’t even expecting that we will be able to get the chance to win. In the end I was sure that Singletary would make both free throws and after that all the players thought that CSKA would try to go to overtime. But Langdon scored and this close game was lost for us."
