THE TAKE

Two early-season powers in Group A will battle in the Russian capital on Wednesday when CSKA Moscow hosts Montepaschi Siena to tip off Week 2 of the regular season. Both teams must be pleased with their opening-week performances as CSKA swept by Prokom Trefl in the traditional Euroleague Opening Game by 69-88, while Montepaschi cruised to an 80-52 victory over Union Olimpija. Now they will test each other knowing that one of them will no longer be undefeated nor in first place. Montepaschi has some positive history it takes with it to Moscow: the last time it faced CSKA on the road was the season-opener in 2005, which the Italian champs won 69-74. Before that, the two teams met in the Final Four third-place games in Barcelona in 2003 and Tel Aviv in 2004, with each team winning once. Although a handful of players from some of those games are still around, a noteworthy one is CSKA center David Andersen, who used to play for Montepaschi and switched sides in 2004. Beyond the matchups between the clubs, many of the players are familiar with one another from other games, as new CSKA signings Nikos Zisis and Marcus Goree arrived from the Italian League, while Montepaschi's Ksistof Lavrinovic arrived from Russia. The depth on these teams and the knowledge the players have of one another makes this game a tactical coach's dream and one that CSKA head coach Ettore Messina and Montepaschi head coach Simone Pianigiani will dive into. Both coaches have built their squads to play team basketball where anyone can be the star. Among the more interesting potential matchups could be between mobile big men Andersen and Lavrinovic, savvy point guards J.R. Holden of CSKA and Terrell McIntyre of Montepaschi, or sharp-shooting wings Trajan Langdon of CSKA and Rimas Kaukenas of Montepaschi. And that's before even taking into account Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas and power forward Matjaz Smodis, two of CSKA's biggest stars, or athletic swingmen Romain Sato and Bootsy Thornton of Montepaschi. CSKA's biggest advantage could be its home court – the club has won its last 18 Euroleague games at CSKA's Universal Sports Hall and is 21-1 there since losing to Montepaschi. This game promises to be a tough test for both teams and an exciting matchup of two early contenders that fans across Europe can sit back and enjoy.

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"I think that Siena is a very hard rival. They have dominated the Italian championship for the last year-and-a-half. We have to respect our opponents: they are potential Final Four participants. Defense on their transition game and their pick-and-roll will be the key for this game. We need to be very conncentrated to play them."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"We'll be facing the strongest team in the world outside of the NBA in terms of solutions, depth of roster, technical skills and ability to play as a team. We are proud to be once again in the Euroleague and to have the possibility of spreading the name of Siena and Montepaschi throughour Europe. What coach Ettore Messina has done in the last three years in Moscow is simply impressive. We'll go there to learn something from a well-oiled machine that represents the ultimate point of reference today."

Players

ANDERSEN, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"The game against Siena will be a challenge for all of our team, and for me personally, too. Montepaschi is my former team, so I want to show my best and to play tough."
KAUKENAS, RIMANTAS
Montepaschi Siena
"We get to this match unbeaten and this is very important for us. We are developing our chemistry and the game with CSKA will be a very hard challenge. We won't start the game already beaten, however. We'll do our best to stay in the game until the end."
Theodoros Papaloukas - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow took the big showdown in Group A by edging Montepaschi Siena 74-70 in an outstanding game in the Russian capital on Wednesday. CSKA extended its home-court winning streak to 19 Euroleague games at Universal Sports Arena and now leads Group A with a 2-0 record, while Montepaschi dropped to 1-1. Matjaz Smodis led the winners with 16 points. Theo Papaloukas added 12 off the bench, while Ramunas Siskauskas and Marcus Goree each had 11 for CSKA. Outstanding defense and an unstoppable Kaukenas allowed Montepaschi to take a 67-70 lead with two minutes to go. Smodis stepped up with free throws and a jump hook for a 72-70 CSKA edge with 9.1 seconds to go. Terrell McIntyre lost the ball in Montepaschi's decisive possession and Trajan Langdon sealed the outcome with more free throws.

CSKA ran its offense through big Aleksey Savrasenko in the early going, as he followed a jump hook with a big basket in the low post. Montepaschi did not panic, however, as Lavrinovic answered twice from downtown and sent Savrasenko to the bench with two early fouls. He and added a free throw to give the guests a 4-7 lead. David Andersen hit a triple from the top of the key, but Montepaschi kept its momentum going. Ksistof Lavrinovic - Montepaschi SienaMontepaschi continued to commit turnovers early in the second quarter, while Papaloukas took over with a driving basket, which Andersen followed with a put-back layup for a 24-18 CSKA lead. Eze banked in an off-balanced shot, but the guests kept finding it hard to score as CSKA's defense was as physical and well-adjusted as usual. Andersen had a block, which allowed Nikos Zisis to bury a triple from the corner, which led to Montepaschi calling timeout at 27-20. Vlado Ilievski stepped up with a driving layup and Shaun Stonerook nailed a triple from the right wing to get Montepaschi within 2. CSKA tried Langdon on Ilievski now, while Goree followed a baseline jumper with a three-pointer to restore a 7-point CSKA lead. Langdon and Zisis added respective driving baskets to give CSKA its first double-digit lead, 36-25, after a 9-0 run. Kaukenas took over with an eight-meter bomb and Lavrinovic added a layup-plus-foul in a 0-8 run that McIntyre capped with free throws to keep Montepaschi in the game, 36-33, at halftime.

Smodis got CSKA going in the second half with a baseline jumper, while Siskauskas added free throws, as once again Montepaschi struggled against the hosts' outstanding defense. Smodis paced CSKA with a a terrific move in the low post, which Bootsy Thornton erased with a layup. CSKA kept looking for its big men inside, as Andersen scored in the paint and soon added free throws on Lavrinovic's third foul for a 46-36 lead. Tomas Ress stepped up with a four-meter jumper and Thornton added a big basket to give Montepaschi some hope at 48-40. Eze stepped up with a second-chance layup and Sato added a turnaround jumper to get Montepaschi closer, 63-56. Stonerook beat the buzzer with a triple, making CSKA call timeout at 65-63. Goree banked in a critical shot, but Eze erased it with a left-handed hook shot and Kaukenas buried a triple off the dribble to complete the guests comeback, 67-68, with 2:20 to go. CSKA did not find the way to the basket while an unstoppable Kaukenas added another driving layup for a 67-70 Montepaschi edge. Smodis stepped up with free throws and added a jump hook to put CSKA back ahead, 71-70, with a minute to go. McIntyre committed a turnover but Andersen missed free throws in the other end. Stonerook missed a three-point shot and Montepaschi quickly fouled on Smodis, who hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 72-70 CSKA edge with 9.1 seconds remaining. Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"The game was very difficult for us. Montepaschi tried to use their quickness, and they did it well. And now the difficulty in this period of the season is that not all the players understand what they should do in this very moment. That's the reason why I tried to use in the end of the game the players who have been with the team more than one year. I am grateful to the players for winning the game, and for taking decisions. Montepaschi is very strong opponent and I hope the win will become estra motivation for our players."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"We had a great chance to win the game. I'm very sorry we missed it. Even when Moscow was up by 10 pooints, we didn't lose track of the game and we kept reading the situation. From the very start, our goal was to use the matchup Savrasenko-Lavrinovic to our advantage, and we were were able to do that. We let CSKA shoot some easy shots, but that happens sometimes. In the end, it was a good experience for us. We didn't play well in the last four or five possessions, and we let Smodis hit his two post-up shots, but for us it's important to stay confident and strong."

Players

SISKAUSKAS, RAMUNAS
CSKA Moscow
"The first home game is always important for the team. If you start well, you are in the group of leaders for almost all of the season. That's why the game was so important, and so hard to win."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"It was a good game, and a close one. We really need games like this to stay in good shape to be ready for others like it that will come later. I am really excited about playing tonight against Montepaschi and winning."
KAUKENAS, RIMANTAS
Montepaschi Siena
"This game was very important for us. It was very hard, and it's unfortuante that we didn't win it in the end. Anyway, I am very happy that we managed to play the way we did in Moscow."
LAVRINOVIC, KSISTOF
Montepaschi Siena
"The best moment of the game for us was when we were up by three points. We had a good system and it worked in a game of very high quality. The worst moment of the game was when we were down by two in the end. This made us nervous and caused us to make several mistakes in a row."
