THE TAKE

Two teams looking to bounce back from Week 1 losses meet in Kaunas, Lithuania on Wednesday when Zalgiris hosts Prokom Trefl Sopot in Group A. Zalgiris went down 81-75 at Virtus VidiVici Bologna, while Prokom stuck around early but couldn't hold on against CSKA Moscow and lost 69-88 in the traditional Euroleague Opening Game. The game is a homecoming for two of Prokom's players, forward Tomas Masiulis and shooter Donatas Slanina. Masiulis was a member of Zalgiris's 1999 Euroleague championship team, together with current Zalgiris center Eureljus Zukauskas. Slanina spent three seasons with Zalgiris between 1999 and 2002. The Lithuanian champs spent a lot of time gearing up for the start of the season and it showed last week, as point guard DeJuan Collins and center Zukauskas formed an exciting passing tandem. Zalgiris also excelled on defense with 17 steals. But poor three-point and free-throw shooting combined with 21 turnovers were too much to overcome. Prokom also struggled from downtown in its defeat. The teams have similar makeups, with athletic backcourts and big frontcourts. For the hosts, Collins looks like a triple-double threat, who can impact the game in numerous ways. He teams with Marcus Brown, who can regain the title of the Euroleague alltime leading scorer with 16 points in this game, and Marko Popovic to form a dynamic trio. Prokom features Travis Best, Dejuan Wagner and Chritsos Harissis in its guard rotation. Forwards Dainius Salenga, Paulius Jankunas, Jonas Maciulis and Goran Jurak will all be called upon in turn to help guard super scorer Milan Gurovic, who is ably aided by Filip Dylewicz. In the paint, veterans Zukauskas and Tanoka Beard await Prokom's Tomas Van den Spiegel and Ruben Wolkowysky. A key issue for Zalgiris will be finding the right player to matchup with Gurovic, whose combination of size and shooting make him nearly impossible to stop. Jankunas seems a natural candidate for the job: if he succeeds, the game takes on a whole new twist. Meanwhile, Zalgiris will rely heavily on the Collins as a fire-starter, and if any of the Prokom guards can limit his effectiveness, Zalgiris head coach Rimantas Grigas would need alternatives. Although it is only the second game of the season, these two veteran-laden teams know how much of an effect a 0-2 start could have to the season, which promises to make this encounter an intense one that no basketball fan should miss.

Quotes Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"We know that Prokom Trefl this year is stronger than last season. I have talked to Tomas Pacesas, the Lithuanian who is assistant coach in Sopot, and he told that this year they set higher goals and expectations than ever before. Prokom Trefl gathered more money and included more experienced and ambitious players in their lineup. Their loss to CSKA in the first leg doesn't mean anything, because CSKA is one of the favorites this year. And in that game, Prokom still managed to win first quarter. Our opponents hves strong players at every position. Travis Best is perfectly backed up by Christos Harissis and they both are dangerous point guard. At shooting guard, they have Donatas Slanina and Dajuan Wagner, who, in my opinion, is a fantastic player. Van den Spiegel is great addition, too, as he can be factor on both ends of the floor. With Milan Gurovic, who can shoot lights out, this team is very hard to beat. But we can do it."

"Although we lost the first game in Bologna, we are in a good mood and waiting for a second game. We can only blame ourselves for that loss, and we have no other option than to come out and play hard and win. Prokom is a tough team packed with great players. However, they are still lacking a better understanding on the court, because many players came to the team new only this year. They have many dangerous players, but Milan Gurovic should be mentioned, because he is capable of scoring 20 points or more in every single game. Wagner is also dangerous, because he takes lots of responsibility on his shoulders. But we are keen to achieve victory."
De Juan Collins - Zalgiris Kaunas Zalgiris climbed all the way back from an 18-point deficit to take its first victory in Group A on Thursday by 82-72 over visiting Prokom Trefl Sopot before a capacity crowd of 5,000 in Kaunas, Lithuania. Zalgiris evened its record at 1-1 while Prokom dropped to 2-0. Zalgiris turned a 13-31 deficit late in the first quarter into a lead by the middle of the third that it nursed through a close finish to the victory. Jonas Maciulis led the winners with 17 points. Marko Popovic followed with 15, including key free throws down the stretch, while DeJuan Collins had 13 points and 5 assists, Paulius Jankunas 12 points. For Prokom, there were co-leading scorers in Travis Best and Milan Gurovic, each with 20 points. Donatas Slanina was the only other double-figure scorer for the guests, with 14 points. Prokom's trouble on the boards, where it was outrebounded 39-28 overall, proved decisive, especially at the finish, when Zalgiris took several of its 16 offensive rebounds to deny the visitors possession. Behind shooting sprees by Best and Gurovic, Prokom had controlled the game in the early going, but an 11-0 run led by Mantas Kalnietis late in the second quarter got Zalgiris back in the game. Maciulis and Jankunas hit three-pointers as Zalgiris completed a third-quarter takeover of the scoreboard, but until the end, when Gurovic tied it at 67-67 and later got Prokom within 74-71 with a triple, the outcome was unclear. Offensive rebounds and Popovic on the line settled matters for Zalgiris.

A fully-packed Sporto Hale welcomed Zalgiris for its 2007-08 Euroleague home debut, but it was Prokom’s Best who opened the scoring with a three-point play to which Gurovic soon added 2 free throws. The Zalgiris defense watched Best down a long to make it 0-7, but that seemed a wake-up call for the hosts, who answered with 6-0 run on jumpers by Maciulis and Collins followed by Marcus Brown's. On defense, Zalgiris continued to suffer, however, as Gurovic posted a triple and Slanina a put-back to make it 7-15 and force the home team to call time out. Zalgiris center Eurelius Zukauskas came on-court then and scored from the low post before blocking a shot on the other side, but Slanina answered with back-to-back bombs from the downtown that converted the Prokom lead to double digits at 10-21. It got worse from there for the hosts, who could not find the basket on their own court as well as Prokom could. Gurovic got free for another jumper and Best added a layup as the Prokom lead ballooned to 13-31. Only Goran Jurak's triple on the buzzer helped Zalgiris, but the end-of-quarter score still read 16-31 in Prokom's favor.

Milan Gurovic -Prokom Trefl SopotMaciulis tried to spark Zalgiris in the second quarter with a fastbreak layup assisted by Marco Popovic, but Best matched it. Zalgiris had no remedy against red-hot Best, who made another layup. Jurak’s putback basket reduced margin to 22-35 but Prokom answered with a pair of easy baskets against the lax Zalgiris defense. Mantas Kalnietis decided to step up for Zalgiris, and did so with triple that came with a free throw, but he missed it. Zalgiris needed 3 offensive rebounds on one possession before Jankunas nailed long-awaited three-pointer that cut the deficit to 30-41 and prompted a Prokom timeout. Kalnietis remained hot with a free throw and a brilliant fastbreak assist to Jankunas to highlight a 11-0 run that got the hosts back in the game at 35-42 after one half.

Maciulis opened the second half with a long three-pointer but Best answered with a jumper from the high post. Maciulis remained hot as he made a free throw, added basket on a fastbreak and dished to Collins on another fastbreak for what became 2 free throws that got Zalgiris within a single point, 43-44. Prokom tried to change the situation from outside the arc but both Best and Gurovic found nothing but the rim. On the other side, the shots kept falling as Jankunas launched the downtown strike that gave Zalgiris its first lead of the game, 46-44. The veterans jumped on the bandwagon then, with Tanoka Beard scoring inside and Brown downing a difficult turnaround jumper. Slanina created his own shot off the dribble for points, but Zalgiris found sharpshooter Popovic wide open outside the arc and he took the opportunity for a triple that left the hosts in control at 56-50 after 30 minutes.

Prokom showed it still meant business as Christos Harissis hit a jumper and Best a triple to start the final quarter. Zalgiris answered with impressive individual play by Popovic, who buried his own bomb from the outside on the very next possession. Ruben Wolkowysky nailed a triple for Prokom before Beard boxed out inside for an easy layup. Best kept living up to his name with another long jumper. Wolkowysky made a high post jumper and Gurovic capped Prokom's rally with 3 free throws for a 67-67 tie. Zalgiris played pick-’n’-roll for Collins, who made a nice jumper. Zalgiris then executed the play that left Maciulis open for the three-pointer that extended the gap to 72-67. Gurovic nailed his final triple that was followed with a free throw by Slanina to cut the difference to 74-71. After Maciulis fouled out, however, Prokom couldn't tie. That's when Popovic made a pair crucial free throws while Best traveled at the other end. That was all for visitors and Zalgiris made sure at the foul line of its first Euroleague victory this season.

Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"I would like to thank our fans. Their devotion and support motivated my players. Half of the game our defense worked as it had to work. In the beginning of the game we lacked confidence and missed a lot of easy shots. Every player tried to step up and change the game, but it turned to worse as we took too many difficult shots. However, we managed the situation and started to play as we were supposed to play from the tip-off. We let them score 31 point in the first quarter and only 41 in the next three quarters. It only means that our defense started to click. Marcus Brown still doesn’t play as we expected him to play. It was not his best game but we believe he can play better and next time he might be a key."
KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"First of all I want to congratulate Zalgiris team. They played great. I would say that the key factor of the loss was us losing on the boards to Zalgiris. They grabbed way too many offensive rebounds. Another thing was that we couldn't play at the same pace that we played in the first half. We couldn’t stop their fast breaks. The hosts played very motivated and had a huge support from the fans. When Zalgiris built a 6-point edge, it was hard to stop them because they started to believe that they can win. It's a pity Dejuan Wagner couldn't help the team, but he got injured during the practice and couldn't play."

Players

MACIULIS, JONAS
Zalgiris
"In the first quarter we played terrible. Actually we didn't play at all. We didn't stick with the game plan and they dominated all over the court. At the beginning of the game we didn't execute our game plan. We let them to get into the shooting rhythm and Slanina and Gurovic took advantage of it. In the second half we played more focused. I think the fan support was very important and boosted the break."
KALNIETIS, MANTAS
Zalgiris
"We started playing at a faster pace, got easy points and that's how we shrinked the gap. It's important that the team won and I don't care that I didn't play much. Of course, I would like to play more, but I am happy that I contributed for our win. The most important thing is our victory."
BEST, TRAVIS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We didn't focus when we needed to. If we had stayed focused, we could have won this game. But we didn't do what we needed to do down the stretch as a team. It's a tough situation being 0-2, because we could have won either game. We just have to play our basketball and do what we do the best. We have to improve our rebounding and defense. We played pretty good defense, but we didn’t come with defensive rebounds. And that's how they got in the game. We knew that Zalgiris will play hard. They have a bunch of guys who want to win. They were aggressive, they got offensive rebounds, and that's how they come up with the win. I feel like we gave a game away."
SLANINA, DONATAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"It's good to be back and play in this cozy arena. I was emotionally charged and heart touched. In the end of the game, we still could take over the game and I became a little bit nervous. I exchanged a few words with the referees, though I don’t behave that way usually. This year Zalgiris is much stronger than the last year. The young players gained more experience and play solid basketball."
