THE TAKE

One of the most anticipated games on the Top 16, Week 4 slate will take place in the Russian capital where reigning Euroleague Basketball champion CSKA Moscow will host Italian champion Montepaschi Siena in a battle for Group H supremacy. The two teams enter the game tied for the top spot in the group at 2-1 and this game could go a long way toward determining which club wins the group and earns home-court advantage in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. The losing team will find itself thrown into a tie for second with the winner of the Fenerbahce Ulker vs Cibona clash. CSKA and Montepaschi have moved in separate directions since head coach Simone Pianigiani’s men thumped CSKA 74-56 in the Russian champs’ worst loss of the decade two weeks ago. All-Euroleague playmaker Terrell McIntyre led the way with 21 points and Rimas Kaukenas added 18 off the bench for the winners, who forced CSKA into 18 turnovers and 2 of 11 three-point shooting. Montepaschi followed that up over the weekend by winning the Italian Cup. CSKA meanwhile was upset in the Russian Cup semifinals and lost captain Matjaz Smodis to injury. But head coach Ettore Messina is sure to use the adversity to have his veteran team even more ready for the challenge at hand. Center Terence Morris produced 10 points and 8 rebounds against Montepaschi last time and he will be called upon to lead the battle in the paint alongside Erazem Lorbek and Viktor Khryapa. They will face the Montepaschi trio of Ben Eze, Shaun Stonerook and Ksistof Lavrinovic. Ramunas Siskauskas and Trajan Langdon start for CSKA on the wings and they will encounter Romain Sato, Henry Domercant and Kaukenas. Both teams feature loaded backcourts as well. J.R. Holden, Nikos Zisis and Zoran Planinic all spend time bringing up the ball for CSKA, while Montepaschi turns to McIntyre and back up Morris Finley. Despite any psychological advantage Montepaschi may have after their last meeting and the high the club will be on after its Italian Cup success, winning on CSKA’s court will be no easy feat. The hosts will surely put an emphasis on the areas that undid them in Siena: stopping McIntyre, rebounding better and limiting their turnovers. Montepaschi will follow the same gameplan that worked, while expecting Lavrinovic to bounce back from a season-low 4 points. What’s certain is that tension will be high in this mouth-watering clash between two legitimate title contenders.

GAME NOTES

CSKA Moscow
  • Guard Trajan Langdon was teammates with Montepaschi big man Ksistof Lavrinovic and point guard Arriel McDonald during the 2004-05 season at Dynamo Moscow.
  • Big man Erazem Lorbek was a teammate of Montepaschi center Tomas Ress during the 2005-06 season at Fortitudo Bologna.
  • CSKA’s 74-56 defeat at Montepaschi two weeks ago was its worst loss in the Euroleague this decade. CSKA had not registered an 18-point loss since going down 83-63 on the road at PAOK on October 6, 1999.
Montepaschi Siena
  • All-Euroleague playmaker Terrell McIntyre has made at least 1 three-pointer in 10 straight appearances.
  • Guard Henry Domercant needs just 10 more points to reach 1,000 for his Euroleague career.

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We again face a strong opponent in Siena and we have to play without Smodis. Of course that hurts our confidence, but we should be ready to fight from minute one, to show our heart and desire. We need to play better than they are. Siena’s aggressive defense gave us many problems, so we should limit our dribble, screen better and pay more attention to the small details of the game."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"We're happy for our wins but it is a great satisfaction to play the big games like the one we'll face tomorrow night against CSKA. We'll play on the court of the reigning champions and being here on February means we're doing well also in the Euroleague. CSKA never loses two consecutive games, we had big merits in Siena stopping them and containing their power, but here in Moscow we have to do even more to stay in the match and try to win it."

Players

LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"I definitely think that the game will be very competitive. We are coming off the loss in Siena where they played very well. Two weeks ago we allowed them to dictate their game and now we will try to play on our own. We will do our best to get the win."
MCINTYRE, TERRELL
Montepaschi Siena
"It is going to be a very tough game. CSKA is the team with a very good execution as they average the less turnovers in the Euroleague. We are doing good, our shape is good. Of course we are a little tired after three games in a row in the Final Eight of the Italian Cup. But we won the Cup for the first time in the club's history and it makes us very proud. It will be a key game for our Euroleague season, we'll do our best to win and take the first place."
MCDONALD, ARRIEL
Montepaschi Siena
"We came here to Moscow after winning the Italian Cup with a good feeling and atmosphere in the team. We know it will be a very difficult game, but we're experienced and know how to handle this kind of match. It's a great opportunity to win and try to reach the first place in our group. We need to be focused to do our best."
Matjaz Smodis - CSKA MoscowCSKA Moscow became the main candidate to win Top 16 Group H by thrashing Montepaschi Siena 95-71 in the Russian capital on Wednesday night. CSKA leads Group H with a 3-1 record and will reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs with a win in either of its two remaining games. Montepaschi falls to 2-2 and a tie for second place. The Italian champs face a critical home game against Cibona next week. CSKA put on a masterful second-half show exemplified by tying a Top 16 record with 17 three-point shots made. Matjaz Smodis paced the winners with a season-high 22 points. J.R. Holden added 18 on 5-for-7 three-point shooting, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Erazem Lorbek posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, Trajan Langdon also had 14 points, Ramunas Siskauskas got 13 while Terence Morris contributed 10 for CSKA, which buried 17 of 27 triples and outrebounded Montepaschi 34-22. Henry Domercant led Montepaschi with 19 points. Terrell McIntyre added 15 and 7 assists while Romain Sato had 11 points for the guests, who trailed 45-44 at halftime. CSKA dramatically improved its defense after the break and buried 7 three-pointers in the third quarter for a 77-55 lead. CSKA also managed to overcome its 18-point loss in Siena for any potential tiebreaker and cruised to an outstanding win.

Terrell McIntyre - Montepaschi SienaMcIntyre got Montepaschi going with free throws, as CSKA tried to open the court in the early going with Smodis and Lorbek together on court. McIntyre struck from downtown that Smodis answered with a basket-plus-foul to get CSKA within 3-5. Siskauskas buried a corner three-pointer but a backdoor layup by Domercant restored a 6-7 Montepaschi edge. Benjamin Eze shined with a reverse layup and had a huge block on Lorbek. Meanwhile, a triple by Shaun Stonerook boosted the guests' margin to 6 after a 0-7 run. Lorbek scored down low and Langdon added a stop-and-pop jumper to keep CSKA close. Siskauskas took over with an off-balance driving layup, but McIntyre kept Montepaschi ahead, 12-15. CSKA dominated the offensive boards and Langdon tied the game with his first three-pointer. Sato took over with a power layup while Eze scored around the basket for a 15-19 Montepaschi margin. Morris followed a free throw with a bomb from downtown to tie the game at 19-19 at the end of an exciting first quarter.

Rimas Kaukenas buried a wide open three-pointer. Holden answered from downtown, but Kaukenas added a wild driving layup to put Montepaschi back ahead, 22-25. CSKA struggled to find open shots while more free throws by Domercant made it a 5-point game. The hosts called timeout and Lorbek stepped up with a jump hook and a three-pointer to tie it at 27-27. Domercant rescued Montepaschi with a power layup, but a three-pointer by Smodis gave CSKA its first lead, 30-29. Langdon swished a five-meter jumper and a layup by Smodis capped a 12-2 CSKA run. Ksistof Lavrinovic sank free throws, but a put-back basket by Lorbek and a three-pointer by Holden boosted CSKA's edge to 39-31. McIntyre shined with a floating layup that Viktor Khryapa matched with a big dunk. Montepaschi improved with a 2-3 zone defense while foul shots by Kaukenas and Domercant brought the guests back to life, 41-37. Domercant sank a corner triple, but Lorbek nailed a jumper for a 43-40 CSKA edge. McIntyre buried a three-pointer in transition before free throws by Smodis restored a 45-44 CSKA edge at halftime.

J.R. Holden - CSKA MoscowCSKA improved its defense right after the break, holding Montepaschi scoreless for more than three minutes. Meanwhile, Smodis beat the shot clock with a five-meter jumper and fed Langdon for an easy layup, good for a 49-44 CSKA lead. Siskauskas took over with a catch-and-shoot three-pointer while Langdon also downed one from downtown to make it 55-44 after a 10-0 run. Sato stepped up with a layup-plus-foul that Smodis matched with a corner triple. Montepaschi called timeout, but Holden joined the three-point shootout to make it a 14-point game. McIntyre sank free throws and Kaukenas added a layup, but another corner triple by Holden and free throws by Zoran Planinic kept CSKA way ahead, 66-51. Domercant nailed a jumper but Morris answered from downtown and Lorbek scored inside for a 71-53 CSKA margin. Domercant kept pacing Montepaschi with foul shots but Morris buried another three-pointer and Langdon added an outstanding driving layup to break the game open, 77-55, after 30 minutes.

The outcome was already clear, but both teams fought for point differential because Montepaschi downed CSKA 74-56 earlier this month. Montepaschi could not find the way to the basket and Smodis took over with back-to-back layups for a 26-point CSKA margin. Montepaschi tried to stop the game with a timeout and Lavrinovic nailed a three-pointer that Domercant followed with a six-meter jumper for an 82-60 deficit. CSKA called timeout, but kept finding it hard to score until Siskauskas dunked in transition. Sato answered with a jumper and soon added an open triple to get Montepaschi within 84-67. Siskauskas rescued CSKA with a three-pointer that Holden followed with a lightning quick layup to restore a 89-67 CSKA margin with two minutes to go. Another three-pointer by Smodis sealed the outcome, as all CSKA fans were already celebrating that their team is on the right path to reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs.

Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It was not easy for our team to play this game because of all the bad thinking after the losses in Siena and in the Russian Cup. But at the same time it also motivated us. We need to thank all of the players, especially Smodis and Khryapa. Smodis suffered an injury on Saturday and we were sure he would not play. But he wanted to play badly. Khryapa received the hit in his eyebrow during yesterday’s practice, he received 11 stitches and again we were sure he would not play. But he wanted to. I also want to thank our fans for an incredible support. I think that our lack of confidence before the game was compensated with the tiredness of Siena after their win in Italian Cup. The team believed that we could win this game in the last three minutes of the first half, when we went up by 8. And what is important is that we never thought about the point difference and we never stopped playing."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"We tried hard in the first 20 minutes, moved the ball and the players well and even found a way to stop CSKA’s first surge with the zone defense at the end of first half. But in the beginning of second half we missed three or four open shots and CSKA was able to change the rhythm of the game, to score some open shots and to build a gap. And after we dropped 10 points down, we just stopped playing defense and offense, stopped making any screens and moving the ball. We were probably tired after the win in the Italian Cup. But I cannot say anything bad about my players. They were very professional all the week away from Siena, we did not even allow ourselves a little celebration… You can lose in Moscow. Especially when CSKA plays its top game. Now we must forget about the final 15 minutes and focus on the remaining games of Top 16. I think after this huge win, it’s 99 percent that CSKA will be the first in our group. And we should fight with the other teams for the second place."
