THE TAKE

A direct fight for the top spot in regular season Group B takes place in Malaga, Spain, where Unicaja hosts Olympiacos on Wednesday night. Unicaja rallied to beat Partizan 64-72 on the road last Thursday behind 19 points from Joel Freeland. Meanwhile, Olympiacos did not find much trouble in defeating Entente Orleanaise 94-72 with 23 points from Linas Kleiza. Unicaja should have scoring machine Taquan Dean back, adding to a deep perimeter rotation also featuring Berni Rodriguez, Saul Blanco and Jiri Welsch on the wings. Welsch and veteran Carlos Jimenez could have the key missions of stopping Josh Childress and Kleiza, while Rodriguez and Blanco will test their defensive skills against Von Wafer and Yotam Halperin. Olympiacos will try to open the court with Kleiza and Panos Vasilopoulos at both forwards. Jimenez and former Olympiacos star Georgios Printezis will need to match them. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, since Olympiacos is so deep at that position. The Reds can use Milos Teodosic to play five-on-five offense, former Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas if a true floor general and a leader is needed or Patrick Beverley to break the game rhythm with his athleticism and quickness. Omar Cook is set to see most minutes at point guard for Unicaja, with Pooh Jeter offering determination and speed off the bench. Olympiacos has Sofoklis Schortsianitis back in its lineup. With “Baby Shaq” on the floor, Olympiacos will look for one-on-one situations in the low post. All-Euroleague forward Ioannis Bouroussis and legendary center Nikola Vujcic are equally important in the Reds' frontline. Freeland and Robert Archibald have a tough test against Schortsianitis and Bourousis, with Guillem Rubio providing aggressive play and deep shooting range off the bench. Unicaja must slow down the game tempo and improve its defense to beat Olympiacos in front of a sellout crowd. Olympiacos must play very aggressive and run the break as often as possible. Either way, two big teams with high-profile names and talents can be counted on to deliver plenty of excitement in Malaga this Wednesday.

GAME NOTES

Unicaja

Forward Georgios Printezis welcomes his former club to Malaga this week. Printezis played six seasons with Olympiacos – his whole career spare one year on loan. He has been a teammate of more than half the Reds’ current roster.

Team captain Berni Rodriguez is now 23 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark for his Euroleague career. Rodriguez also needs just 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Big man Joel Freeland scored 19 points in his Euroleague debut last week.

Playmaker Omar Cook has dished at least 6 assists in each of his last four Euroleague games.

The two coaches and eight players from this game took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Unicaja’s Aito Garcia Reneses guided Spain to an 81-66 win over Panagiotis Giannakis and Greece in the group stage.

Olympiacos

Kostas Papanikolaou is set to make his Euroleague debut.

Center Nikola Vujcic needs just 5 points to reach the 2,200-point mark for his career. The former All-Euroleague center is currently ranked second on the Euroleague career scoring charts.

Vujcic is 7 offensive rebounds behind his former Maccabi teammate Marcus Goree for 10th place on the career offensive rebounding chart. Vujcic currently has 237 career offensive rebounds.

Theo Papaloukas is closing in on a spot among the best 20 career scorers in the Euroleague. Papaloukas now has 1,393 points – 21 away from 20th place.

Papaloukas, the Euroleague’s career assists leader, needs 4 more assists to reach 750 for his career.

Linas Kleiza shined with 23 points and 9 rebounds in his Euroleague debut last week.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"Taking into account the previous games, we do not have to change many things, because if all had been bad, we would have lost all games by 30 points. It is true that in the last games we gave away 10 points at the start of the game and then 10 more at the end, and those are big gifts. The rest of the time was not that way. It's true that we have lost all games in the Spanish League and have won one in the Euroleague. That's why we need a new win, to get back on our feet as a team. We know that Olympiacos was in the last Final Four and that it will be extremely hard to beat them. That's why we have to forget about the bad things we have done so far and hope for the support of our fans. We will need them more than ever."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"After they beat Partizan, Unicaja proved that it is more focused in the Euroleague than in the ACB. But I also think that after the losses they suffered in the Spanish League, they became tougher. We have to play good basketball and try to control the rhythm of the game from the very first moment in a basketball arena where the fans give great help to their team. Unicaja and all the Spanish teams never quit, especially when they play at home, and if they will find an opponent without concentration, they take advantage of this and they can crush them."

Players

WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"We hav to change our mentality, we have to play better than we have so far. Now we will get Olympiacos, one of the best European teams last season, who we already faced last year in the regular season. They have great individuals, but in addition thy combine to form a solid team. There is no doubt that we have a tough test ahead of us."
TEODOSIC, MILOS
Olympiacos
"We play against a great team, which has built a tradition in the Euroleague. Unicaja is playing modern basketball and has a lot of quality. They suffered some maybe unexpected losses in the Spanish League, but this is not a reason to doubt their potential. A Euroleague game is another story. We are expecting a full arena and a very hot atmosphere, which gives us special motivation. This is the first real test for Olympiacos and we have to react properly."
Taquan Dean - UnicajaUnicaja stayed undefeated atop the Group B standings by thrashing Olympiacos 86-68 in Malaga, Spain on Wednesday night. Unicaja improved to 2-0 and will be the only undefeated team in this group if Entente Orleanaise downed Lietuvos Rytas tomorrow. Meanwhile, Olympiacos went down to 1-1 and hosts L. Rytas next week. Taquan Dean led the winners with 19 points. Pooh Jeter added 11 while Joel Freeland and Robert Archibald each had 10 for Unicaja. Freeland also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. Nikola Vujcic led Olympiacos with 17 points on 8-of-10 two-pointers. Milos Teodosic added 15 while Linas Kleiza had 10 for the Reds. Dean helped Unicaja to get ean early double-digit lead at 17-7 and got some help from Jeter to boost that margin to 30-18 after 10 minutes. Vujcic singlehandely brought Olympiacos within 36-32 midway through the second quarter but Dean helped Unicaja to restore a 48-38 margin at halftime. Archibald led an 11-0 run that broke the game open, 59-40, and Olympiacos never recovered.

Dean got Unicaja going with a three-pointer off a screen but driving layups by Josh Childress and Teodosic gave the Reds a 3-4 edge. Omar Cook struck from downtown, as Unicaja tried to speed up the game tempo and play very physical. Archibald sank free throws while Carlos Jimenez banked in a short shot for a 10-4 Unicaja edge. Olympiacos kept trying to attack the basket without much success while Archibald capped a 9-0 Unicaja run with more foul shots. Olympiacos went scoreless for 3 minutes until Teodosic downed a seven-bomb but a stop-and-pop jumper by Cook and a put-back layup by Dean made it a double-digit game, 17-7. Unicaja kept rolling, as former Olympiacos star Giorgos Printezis scored inside while Freeland dunked it in transition to make the Reds call timeout at 21-9. Vujcic scored twice around the basket but Guillem Rubio and Jiri Welsch kept Unicaja way ahead, 25-13. Teodosic nailed a triple but Olympiacos only managed to trade baskets now. Jeter answered from downtown and added a wild driving layup for a 12-point Unicaja lead, 30-18, after 10 minutes.

Milos Teodosic - OlympiacosSaul Blanco found his first points right at the start of the second quarter but Theo Papaloukas took over with a reverse layup. Archibald and Yotam Halperin traded layups, as Olympiacos finally adjusted its defense, not allowing Unicaja to get easy shots and fast break points. Vujcic scored inside and Unicaja called timeout to modify its game plan. The hosts tried to slow down the game tempo but Vujcic added another layup to bring the Reds within single digits, 34-26. Dean sank foul shots, as Unicaja tried fullcourt pressure now. Vujcic stayed unstoppable, igniting a 0-6 run that Kleiza capped with a floating layup that brought Olympiacos within 36-32. Freeland rescued Unicaja with a layup-plus-foul that Kleiza turned into a four-play trying to sweep the ball from the hoop after the free throw. Papaloukas provided a highlight with a huge driving layup that Jimenez downed a corner triple for a 43-34 score. Kleiza answered from downtown but a red hot Dean followed a triple with a jumper to restore a double-digit Unicaja margin, 48-38, at halftime.

Von Wafer scored in penetration immediately after the break but free throws by Freeland and another three-pointer by Dean set the crowd on fire at 53-40. Olympiacos tried to feed Vujcic down low but he was double-teamed all the time now. Jiri Welsch sank free throws while Freeland added a six-meter jumper to make it a 17-point game, 57-40. Olympiacos kept struggling to score and free throws by Archibald capped an 11-0 Unicaja run. Patrick Beverley tried to change things with a driving layup - the Reds' first points in 4 minutes - and Vafer dunked it, but Unicaja kept finding easy points. Dean scored in penetration but Vujcic and Beverley kept Olympiacos within 63-47. Unicaja struggled to score now but Blanco rescued the hosts with a three-pointer, good for a 66-48 lead. Jimenez also struck from downtown to break the game open, 69-48. Blanco capped a 8-0 Unicaja run with free throws but Beverley brought the Reds within 71-50 after 30 minutes.

Olympiacos needed a quick comeback to keep its options alive but Unicaja kept full control of the game early in the fourth quarter. Freeland took over with a high-flying alleyoop dunk and the Reds kept finding it hard to score against the hosts' outstanding intensity, especially in defense. Jeter shined with a tough reverse layup that made it a 24-point game, 75-51. The outcome was clear already but both teams kept fighting hard for points differential, in what could be a decisive factor to finish atop this regular season group. Vujcic and Printezis traded layups while a jumper by Archibald kept Unicaja way ahead, 81-58. Unicaja did not lose control and stayed focused, not allowing Olympiacos to recover. Kleiza kept trying but everything was said and done already. Unicaja pleased its 8,900 fans in the stands with a well-deserved win while Olympiacos needs to bounce back right way to challenge for first place in this group.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"Having fast defenses in this game turned it into an up-tempo one and we made the most out of that. Taquan Dean was very important for us, especially being able to score from the very beginning. As for the last play of the first half, according to the referees, the ball was not going in and would not have touched the rim either, but if you look at the video, you will see it was impossible that the ball would not hit the rim. This is a very positive win for us, but we also won in Belgrade and then lost in the Spanish League."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Unicaja had a really good game and we were not focused tonight. We had several players injured and we paid a high price for that in this game. We tried to change the game dynamic in the second quarter, but made several mistakes and Unicaja made the most of them. In summation, we didn't play a good game in Malaga tonight."

Players

DEAN, TAQUAN
Unicaja
"I had my best game since I came to Unicaja. This is a very important win for the team. We have to start winning games in the Spanish League, too. Overall, we played really well tonight against a good team with great players."
