THE TAKE

Union Olimpija hopes to keep its unbelievable home-court winning streak going when it welcomes Tau Ceramica to Hala Tivoli in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Wednesday night. Olimpija already downed Euroleague giants Olympiacos and CSKA Moscow in Group A when thos teams visited Ljubljana. On the other hand, Tau has won three straight games since dropping its season opener. Fans in the Slovenian capital will be aware of this game's historic echoes, too, as it marks a rematch of the 1994 Saporta Cup final in which Olimpija acquired its only European club title against Tau, then called Taugres. It is also a special game for playmaker Goran Dragic, who has a long-term deal with Tau, but was loaned this season to Olimpija, where he has been a starter. Dragic leads an interesting frontcourt that also features combo-guard Maurice Bailey, playmaker Jan Mocnik and sharp-shooter Sasa Doncic. Dragic will have a tough test against two-time All-Euroleague second team selection Pablo Prigioni, while Bailey will likely have a big matchup against tall playmaker Zoran Planinic. Olimpija's main concern, however, will be slowing Igor Rakocevic, a natural-born scorer who won the Alphonso Ford Trophy last season. Jasmin Hukic has been on fire for Olimpija lately, joining forces with do-it-all swingman Ronell Taylor on the wings. Hukic has the chance to test his shooting skills against Simas Jasaitis, while Sergi Vidal provides experience and defense. The battle in the paint will be equally interesting, as Marko Milic will try to lead Olimpija to another heroic win. Miha Zupan, Chris Booker and Mirza Begic complement him, offering rebounding power and size. Mirza Teletovic, currently the Euroleague's top rebounder, is ready to have a big battle against Milic, while Will McDonald, Pete Mickeal and above all, Tiago Splitter, are set to dominate in the paint. Linton Johnson is also expected to make his Euroleague debut to help Tau inside. Splitter is having his most solid season, helping Prigioni to find a new way to develop his trademark pick-and-roll in the high post. Even though on paper Tau may be the favorite, Olimpija has already beaten top teams with outstanding defense and wild support from its fans at Hala Tivoli. Expect nothing but a intense battle for which no result will be a surprise between such motivated teams.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"It's going to be a very tough game. I played a lot of games against them and I worked for that club for four years, so I can say I'm not surprised that they were able to beat Olympiacos and CSKA at home. They are more dangerous at home than away, but I think we’ll be ready to face them as we are preparing the game well. They are a team with no big stars, but I think their strongest point is that they play like a real team and are really strong as a group. In addition, it's possible that they could count on Boris Gorenc, who was injured, to play against us. I think that it was a very good decision to give Goran Dragic on loan to Union Olimpija. I know the club, I know their system and I know the coach, and I’m sure that the fact that he plays in the Euroleague this season will help him a lot for the future, when he comes back to Vitoria to play for Tau."

"For me this will be a very special game, since I will be playing against the team that owns my contract. I think that we can win, but only playing to perfection. We have to have a good day and on the court bring together all our strength to play at our maximum over 40 minutes. Tau Ceramica plays very quick basketball, with lots of fastbreaks, so we will have to impose our own tempo on the game."
MCDONALD, WILL
Tau Ceramica
"Right now, every game is difficult for every team. You can think that one game is going to be easy, but there are no easy games in this competition. All you can do is to prepare in the same way you do for every game. We stay the same and we know it's going to be a difficult task to win there. We must prepare and try to win. We are not taking them as a soft team, we are taking them as a very tough team. I can't say that we are at our best right now; we are playing well, but we must try to keep going in this way and improve as much as we can for the whole season."
Will McDonald - Tau Ceramica Careful not to trip where other favorites had fallen earlier this season, Tau Ceramica made sure early of what became an easy 78-92 road win over Union Olimpija in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Wednesday. The victory was Tau's fourth in a row and kept it even with CSKA Moscow at 4-1 for the Group A lead. Olimpija, meanwhile, dropped to 2-3 and tied for fourth place with Zalgiris Kaunas. The Euroleague's reigning top scorer, Igor Rakocevic, blased his way to 26 points on the strength of 3 first-quarter triples that gave Tau double-digit leads for the rest of the game. Pete Mickeal followed him with 15 points, while Tiago Splitter added 14, Will McDonald and Zoran Planinic 11 each. Olimpija played catch-up enough to get within 10 points early in the final quarter, but no closer. Ronell Taylor had 14 points for the hosts, Marko Milic 12, Maurice Bailey 11, Jasmin Hukic and Goran Dragic 10 each.

Rakocevic buried his first tirple try to give Tau its first points, but Hasan Rizvic's second basket and a first by Milic let Olimpija lead 6-5. The hosts would not lead again. Splitter's inside basket and a basket-plus-free throw by Planinic sent Tau on 2-8 run capped by another three-point play, this by Mickeal. Olimpija bit back with 12-13 on a basket by Ronell Taylor, but Tau's next response was even bigger, a 4-17 blast punctuated by Rakocevic's second and third triples back-to-back, plus his free throws to follow. That lasted 5 minutes until the quarter ended with the visitors in full control at 16-30.

Marko Milic - Union OlimpijaMcDonald took over the Tau offense to start the second quarter, with 7 points of his own that stretched the lead to 20-37 before Rakocevic returned and added a jumper. Indeed, those two shared Tau's first 13 poitns in the quarter, but the story was Tau's defense, which only allowed 6 points in as many minutes to Olimpija, until Miha Zupan's free throws started a 7-0 mini-run for the hosts that ended with Maurice Bailey's triple and a 29-43 scoreboard. Tau took a timeout to rectify the situation and with Rakocevic completing a 20-point scoring half, eased into the break ahead by 31-51.

Jasmin Hukic lifted Olimpija's spirits by starting the second half with a triple, but even when he scored his team's next basket, it only got them within 36-55. Tau was content to trade points in slow-scoring quarter. Hukic's next triple and free throws by Zupan got the hosts within 43-59 and Goran Dragic later struck from long-range to cut it further, 51-64. Tau responded with quick baskets by Planinic and Mickeal, while Zupan and Sergi Vidal matched free throws on the way to a 53-70 score after 30 minutes.

Taylor and Pablo Prigioni answered each other's triples early in the final quarter, but by the time Dragic returned for another, Olimpija was within 10 points again, at 63-73. It was still the same difference when Tau made its final move, with Prigioni feeding Splitter inside and Rakovic stealing to assist Mirza Teletovic's three-pointer, making it 65-80. Another pair of steals leading to baskets by Prigioni and Rakocevic assured one of the highest leads, 65-84, and made it clear that unlike other superpowers, Tau was taking a victory home with it from Ljubljana.

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"I believe that the key factor in this win is that we prepared the game really well. We managed to analyze Union Olimpija really well, we saw how they beat Olympiacos and CSKA. We were ready for anything happening in tonight's game."

Players

HUKIC, JASMIN
Union Olimpija
"Tau Ceramica deserved to win tonight, as it was better than us for the best part of this game. We were not able to play as good as we did in our home wins against Olympiacos and CSKA."
MILIC, MARKO
Union Olimpija
"We had a slow start and when you are trailing by 20 against such a good, experienced team like Tau Ceramica, it is difficult to regain your own rhythm."
PLANINIC, ZORAN
Tau Ceramica
"Everyone lived up to the expectations tonight. We played well in defense but also in offense. We managed to get a well-deserved win."
RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Tau Ceramica
"We were ready for this game, as we prepared it really well. We knew that if we allowed Olimpija to play its game, we could have lost tonight. We also managed to stay focused in the second half."
