THE TAKE

A modern classic in European basketball will have a new chapter added on Thursday when Caja Laboral faces archrivals CSKA Moscow in Vitoria, Spain. These teams have become fierce opponents throughout the decade, facing each other in the 2005 and 2008 Euroleague semifinals. Moreover, last time CSKA was in Vitoria, it won and snapped Laboral's Euroleague record 30-game home-court winning streak. Each of the teams' 12 showdowns have been intense battles full of outstanding basketball. CSKA, however, faces severe injury problems, as power forward Andrey Vorontsevich and center Dimitry Sokolov have joined Matjaz Smodis in the injury list. As such, Sasha Kaun becomes his team's starting center while Viktor Khryapa is set to see minutes as power forward, with Nikita Kurbanov and Ivan Radenovic coming off the bench. Kurbanov provides intensity and deep range while Radenovic offers mobility and quickness. Kaun has the tough mission to guard All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter, in what promises to be an intense battle in the low post. Khryapa faces a key matchup against Mirza Teletovic. Lior Eliyahu hopes to use his quickness and transition game against Radenovic, while Kurbanov will have to play tough against big Stanko Barac. With Brad Oleson sidelined, Laboral loses firepower, but still can count on Carl English, Fernando San Emeterio and Teletovic to open the court for Splitter. English underwent an adjustment period and is now showcasing his scoring skills. San Emeterio is Laboral's own all-around player, helping the team in many ways. Due to the circumstances - Walter Herrmann is still sidelined – Vladimir Micov will see extended playing time to guard former Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas, a natural-born mismatch due to his ball-handling ability, basketball IQ and silent leadership. English has a tough test against Trajan Langdon, a former Final Four MVP ready for any challenge. With Marcelo Huertas not expected to play against CSKA, Pau Ribas and recent arrival Sean Singletary are ready for what promises to be a critical matchup against J.R. Holden. Anton Ponkrashov offers size and strength off the bench - even though he and Holden can play together at any time. Laboral must feed Splitter down low and run its offense through him, which can then open up shots for the perimeter scorers. CSKA must get Siskauskas and Langdon their shots, in addition to controlling the game tempo through Holden. Expect a big battle at Fernando Buesa Arena with plenty at stake.

GAME NOTES

Caja Laboral

Tiago Splitter needs one more rebound to tie Dejan Tomasevic for 20th place on the Euroleague career rebounding charts. He enters the game with 597 career rebounds.

The last time Caja Laboral hosted CSKA, the Russian champs won 76-85 in November 2007 to end Laboral’s Euroleague-record home floor winning streak at 30 games.

Mirza Teletovic is averaging just 2 points per game at home this season compared to 13.3 per game on the road.

Stanko Barac dished a career-high 4 assists in his last game.

CSKA Moscow

Zoran Planinic returns to play in Vitoria for the first time since he left the team in the summer of 2008. Planinic spent two seasons with Caja Laboral, helping it reach the Euroleague Final Four twice and win the Spanish League once. Tiago Splitter and Mirza Teletovic are the only players still on the club from Planinic’s time.

Planinic needs 3 more assists to reach Marko Popovic for 25th place on the Euroleague career assists charts. He currently has 263 career assists.

Trajan Langdon has moved into sole possession of 10th place on the Euroleague career scoring charts with 1,820 points over his Euroleague career. The next player he can pass is Louis Bullock of Real Madrid, who enters Week 5 with 1,846 points.

Langdon has made 16 consecutive free throws over his past four Euroleague games.

Ramunas Siskauskas has scored in double figures in eight consecutive Euroleague appearances.

Siskauskas has made 12 consecutive free throws over his past four Euroleague games.

Viktor Khryapa needs just 4 more blocked shots to reach the career top 10 in that category. He enters this game in 14th place with 76 blocks from 76 games.

Khryapa set a career high with 8 assists in the last game before the break.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"I think we arrive well prepared to this game, ready for the challenge. Our only problem is the absence of some players, but all the ones that are ready to play are prepared and focused to win this game. CSKA is a very experienced team, especially its perimeter players. They have four or five players who are very dangerous in one-on-one situations, they can make the difference in the clutch moments, so we must be aware of them and focus on playing very good defense against them. It's true they have changed the roster a lot, but they are still one of the biggest clubs in Europe, so we shouldn't understimate them. Their experience and background make them one of the most difficult teams of our group."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"Caja Laboral is a traditionally strong team with well-known Coach Ivanovic at the head. CSKA and the team from Vitoria always had very difficult and interesting games and I think this game will be no different. Their game builds through Spilitter and Teletovic, though the team has a number of good perimeter players. Caja Laboral likes to play fast, especially at home, so we should try to control the rhythm of the game, play good defense and to focus on rebounds."

Players

RIBAS, PAU
Caja Laboral
"We have much to win in this game. If we take the win we will go 4-1, we will stay atop and I think it will give us an extra boost for our confidence. We have played three road games so far, so the fact that we are sharing the first place means a lot, and it would mean even more if we are able to grab another win at home. Our target is to come out and play hard all the game and beat CSKA Moscow, one of the best European teams in the last years. Maybe they are struggling a little bit, like we are too. We are not in our best moment and they, probably, had some unexpected defeats. But they still count on first-level players. Maybe they are not the same CSKA that shined in the past, but their perimeter players are among the best ones in Europe. Because of that, they can win any game at any place. We know we must put all we have to be able to beat them. If we play intense for the whole game, we will have chances to win."
PLANINIC, ZORAN
CSKA Moscow
"I am excited to go to Vitoria and to meet the local fans first of all. I was happy to play for them, because they are extremely supportive, they fill the arena even for exhibition games and give you extra energy to play even if you step on the court in a lazy mood. From my times in Tau there are only two players left on the roster – Teletovic and Splitter. But the team’s concept remains the same – to play aggressive, to fight for all 40 minutes. We should be well prepared and focused to win in Vitoria."
Ramunas Siskauskas - CSKA MoscowCSKA Moscow stormed into the battle for the top spots in Group C with a pivotal 67-71 road win over Caja Laboral at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Former Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas shined with 24 points on 5-for-7 three-point shooting and center Sasha Kaun, making his first career start, responded with career highs of 14 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Russian champs to a 3-2 record and a share of a three-way tie for second place. CSKA hosts Maroussi next week. Laboral is now also 3-2 and will host the other 3-2 team, Lottomatica Roma, next week. CSKA opened up a commanding lead in the first quarter thanks to Siskauskas and Kaun, but Laboral never gave in and battled back, eventually taking the lead by the end of the third quarter. That set up an exciting last 10 minutes, but CSKA proved to have more in the tank and made the key baskets to take an important road win. Trajan Langdon added 13 points for CSKA and Viktor Khryapa posted 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Carl English led Laboral with 14 points, Fernando San Emeterio had 12 points and 5 asissts, Mirza Teletovic scored 11 and Tiago Splitter finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Teletovic opened fire for the hosts hitting his first three-point attempt and although Siskauskas responded early with a free throw, Splitter followed him with a nice layup to give Caja Laboral a 5-1 lead after two minutes. But the guests didn’t tremble as English went to the bench because of foul trouble. Laboral was not very accurate on offense, which was exploited by the Russian champs to tie the game at 8-8 after a three by Siskauskas followed by a monster alley-oop by Kaun midway through the first period. Siskauskas remained hot, hitting his second three and feeding Kryhapa for another bomb to cap a 0-11 run for an 8-14 lead that forced an urgent timeout by Dusko Ivanovic. The Laboral boss replaced Pau Ribas with Sean Singletary, looking for a more balanced game on offense, but nothing seemed to work for the hosts. Meanwhile Siskauskas killed San Emeterio’s defense with two more threes to make it 12-20. Kaun scored again to give his team a double-digit margin and Siskauskas closed the quarter with a buzzer-beating bank shot to raise difference to 12-24 at the end of the first period.

Tiago Splitter - Caja LaboralCaja Laboral continued to struggle on offense after the break and was unable to find open shots as Kaun was too big for Splitter inside. The visitors weren’t better, though, as they remained scoreless for the first five minutes of the quarter. Laboral found an unexpected help through Stanko Barac, who took advantage of his size against Khryapa to score twice inside and get an additional foul shot to reduce the margin. Without Siskauskas and Kaun on court, CSKA stumbled and San Emeterio scored another layup on the offensive glass. Laboral continued its charge as Carl English hit his first three to bring the hosts within 22-24 midway through the quarter. CSKA head coach Evgeny Pashutin decided to bring Siskauskas back and the effects were almost immediate. He fed Ivan Radenovic for an easy basket to end his team’s drought and Zoran Planinic hit a jumper to extend the lead to 24-28. English came to the rescue with another three, but Kaun and Khryapa answered immediately to raise difference to 27-32. The teams exchanged baskets with Kaun the main weapon for the guests and Singletary very active for the hosts. Khryapa and Kaun punished Laboral with back-to-back dunks, answering an English fastbreak three, for a 35-40 lead entering the last play. Pashutin prepared the last play for Langdon, who needed less than 5 seconds to nail a long buzzer-beater three-pointer that made it 35-43 at halftime.

Caja Laboral started with two big men, Splitter and Barac, in an attempt to balance the physical advantage of CSKA’s frontcourt, but it wasn’t enough to change the trend. Although English and Splitter scored for the hosts, the answer came again through Kaun and Siskauskas for a 41-47 lead. It was Pau Ribas with a right-sided three pointer who seemed to awake the hosts, whose defense was significantly better than before. The fourth foul of Khryapa forced Pashutin to call for a timeout in order to restructure CSKA’s game. But English tied the game at 47-47 with another three and Ribas hit again from behind the arc to answer Langdon’s layup and return the lead to the hosts, 50-49. The atmosphere was great at this point, as both teams were playing high-voltage basketball, especially on defense. Holden hit a nice one-handed shot to enter the last minute with a 50-51 edge for the visitors. It lasted a few seconds, though, as Teletovic hit an open three to send the game to the decisive quarter with Laboral up 53-51.

Splitter opened fire in the last period with a pair of free throws, but Langdon came quickly to the rescue with back-to-back three pointers that returned a 2-point margin to CSKA with eight minutes to go. Ivanovic didn’t want to wait for more and called for a timeout to prevent the guests from feeling comfortable. San Emeterio nailed a corner three-pointer right after that, but Siskauskas replied with a jumper to turn the game into a thriller, 58-59, with six minutes to go. That was the moment in which J.R. Holden decided it was his turn, as he nailed a pair of jumpers, the last one from downtown, to raise difference to 58-64 and force Laboral to a second timeout with less than five minutes to go. The hosts didn’t panic, though, as Teletovic replied from behind the arc to keep his team alive, 61-64. But Siskauskas hit another big shot from downtown, giving CSKA a 61-67 margin to resist the Laboral comeback attempts. Khryapa, assisted by Kaun, threw down a slam after back-to back layups by San Emeterio and Ribas to enter the last minute with CSKA leading 65-69. Teletovic missed an open three, but as Langdon turned the ball over with only 42 seconds to go. English tried and missed another three, but CSKA wasn’t able to close the game because Holden turned it over again and allowed San Emeterio to make it 67-69 with only 7 seconds left. The final decision came through the hands of Siskauskas, who hit two free throws to cap his awesome performance and seal visitors win, 67-71.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"We started playing a poor defense, but although we improved after the first period, we came up short in the end. I think this game was decided by details. We played poor defense on Langdon when we were up 4 in the last period, some long rebounds we lost on defense, or a pair of turnovers in the clutch moments when the game was on the wire. We lost a very good chance to take the lead of the group, but I hope this can be used by us as a learning experience."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"It was a very difficult game, everybody knows that Caja Laboral is a proud team with great character. They are a big tradition club. They played several Final fours and are coached by a great coach, so it’s not easy at all to win here. We knew that they had two great inside players, Spliter and Teletovic, who are used to dominating games. Our main target was to stop Splitter, and we were able to do it most of the time. We struggled a lot in the second quarter when Splitter started to dominate, but fortunately we resisted. We wanted to slow down their transition and play half court basketball. Both teams could have won tonight. We focused on defense and rebounding, and that was key for the win."

Players

SPLITTER, TIAGO
Caja Laboral
"It is very sad that we lost tonight. We wanted to fight and beat a big team like CSKA Moscow, but we were unable to. We wanted to do a good job tonight, but it proved useless. They worked very well, played great defense and deserved the win. We fought as hard as we could, but it wasn’t enough."
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Caja Laboral
"We fought hard, we suffered, we put in all the effort, but it wasn't to be. We came up short in the end. I think they played better in the clutch moments of the game. Their great defense let them to get easy buckets during the game. Despite of our absences, we were close to winning."
PLANINIC, ZORAN
CSKA Moscow
"I am pretty happy for this win, especially because we knew that after Olimpija beat Rome yesterday, we would be able to grab the second place with a win here and we did it. It was also important because we had some unexpected defeats, like the one we got at home against Lottomatica, so we knew we should win a road game as soon as possible to reinforce our confidence. It’s too hard to win here against Caja Laboral. I played for two years here and the crowd is always involved in the game and helps them a lot. That’s what I warned all my teammates about. It was great to come back to Vitoria, in the beginning it was a little bit funny because I felt strange playing as a visitor. It was like I would like to have been watching this game rather than playing it."
