THE TAKE

A pair of long-time foes meet up for only the third time in international competition when Zalgiris Kaunas hosts CSKA Moscow on Thursday night at the Darius and Girenas Sport Center in Kaunas, Lithuania. Zalgiris and CSKA played countless fierce battles over the years in the old USSR. Since Zalgiris began to compete in the Lithuanian League, the teams met only twice, in 1999, with the home team winning each contest. Zalgiris has played better than its 1-3 record would indicate this season and will look to start getting the results this week against the Euroleague champs. Last week Zalgiris lost 84-75 at Fenerbahce Ulker, despite a solid 18-point, 13-rebound performance by Tanoka Beard. Meanwhile, CSKA bounced back from its only loss of the season by downing Benetton Treviso 83-67 as Trajan Langdon and David Andersen had 16 points apiece. Statistically these teams are quite similar, amassing almost the same amounts of rebounds (Zalgiris 127- CSKA 129), assists (63-60) and turnovers (53-55). The major difference between them is defense. Whereas CSKA has held opponents to 68 points per game, Zalgiris is allowing 81.5. Beard (15 ppg., 8.7 rpg.) and point guard Marko Popovic (14.7 ppg., 4.7 apg.) are the leaders for Zalgiris, but coach Ainars Bagatskis has numerous talented and experienced players who can step up on any given night. Among them are Hanno Mottola (13 ppg.), Pailius Jankunas (10.2 ppg., 6.5 rpg.), Marcelinho Machado and Kirk Penney (11 ppg.). CSKA is without big man Tomas Van Den Spiegel again, but otherwise is healthy. Forward Matjas Smodis (14.3 ppg.) joined Euroleague Final Four MVP Theo Papaloukas (10 ppg., 4.7 apg.) in playing big minutes off the bench last week, as Messina used a starting five that included J.R. Holden (8.5 ppg.), David Vanterpool, Langdon (14.5 ppg.), Andersen (11.7 ppg., 6 rpg.) and Aleksey Savrasenko. CSKA will need Savrasenko to deal smartly with Beard, because stopping him could be the key to stopping Zalgiris, although young forward Jonas Maciulis, with 17.5 points on average in the last two games, has become another threat for the hosts. Zalgiris will need all the help it can get as CSKA is no less dangerous on the road than at home.

Quotes Head Coaches

BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Zalgiris
"CSKA plays very confident and solid basketball. It’s not surprising because they have players that are among the best at every position in the Euroleague. They have huge Euroleague experience and are playing together for a long time. Our opponents’ roster almost didn’t change from last season. CSKA’s players are very confident in their game and understand each other very well on the court. They are not among Euroleague’s stats leaders and it’s clear why: CSKA plays as a true team. Papaloukas, Holden, Vanterpool, Andersen and other players would be leaders on any other team, but in CSKA they are sharing responsibility and contributions. Of course, we will have one big advantage, which is our home court and the support of our devoted fans, and we will be playing definitely with different attitude from the one we showed in our game against Ulker."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It is our next game on the road since we lost to Pau-Orthez, this time against a team that has played two excellent games in the Euroleague, against Napoli and Barcelona. We prepared well and this time we miss only Van Den Spiegel. Zalgiris has a balanced offense and in general, looking at the stats, they are a well-balanced team."

Players

MOTTOLA, HANNO
Zalgiris
"I’ve played against CSKA many times last year, when I played for another Moscow team. They were very powerful the last season and they haven’t changed any of their main players. They are the reigning Euroleague champions. This is a very deep, very experienced and very organized team. It’s going to be very tough game. They have like ten top-level players. No one has to score 30 points to lead that team to victory, so the team can play on the same level every night. They have great shooters and execute offensive plays very well. Of course, their defense puts on lot of pressure, too. Andersen is getting back to full strength from his heavy injury last year. It will be tough work for us to stop him and his teammates, but hopefully it will be a tough night for them as well."
LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"We'll play against a good defensive team that is used to playing hard at home. They are big inside and it is very important for us to take away the easy baskets. It is going to be a tough game and if we want to win, we should stay concentrated for all 40 minutes."
Matjaz Smodis - CSKA Moscow Using its trademark defensive intensity to best effect, CSKA stormed back from double-digit deficits on the road to defeat Zalgiris 59-78 in Kaunas, Lithuania on Thursday and hold onto at least second place in Group C. CSKA raised its record to 4-1 while waiting for the result of previously undefeated Winterthur Barcelona. Meanwhile, Zalgiris fell into a danger zone at 1-4. CSKA held Zalgiris to just 25 points after halftime to steadily pull away to an easy victory. Matjaz Smodis and Trajan Langdon paced the winners with 15 points each, while Theo Papaloukas added 13, J.R. Holden and David Vanterpool 10 each. Zalgiris, which had led 30-20 midway through the second quarter, got 12 points from Marko Popovic and 10 from Hanno Mottola. Tanoka Beards collected 12 rebounds for the hosts.

CSKA got on the scoreboard first as Vanterpool dropped 2 free throws. Popovic answered with a nice penetration but Langdon landed a triple to increase the visitors' lead to 2-5. Vanterpool went to the bench after his second personal foul in as many minutes. Both teams exchanged turnovers and missed shots before Popovic broke the silence with a mid-range jumper that put Zalgiris in front, 7-5, midway through the quarter. Langdon and Beard exchanged jumpers then, while Smodis and Kirk Penney did the same with triples and Zalgiris stayed ahead 12-10. CSKA's normally stingy defense let Popovic and Mottola hit open shots that lifted the Zalgiris edge to 17-12. Despite Smodis scoring 4 points in a row to close the quarter, the hosts still held a 19-14 advantage after 10 minutes.

Vidas Ginevicius got the second quarter going with a corner triple for Zalgiris, but Vanterpool returned to score a basket-plus-free throw that kept CSKA within 22-17. Machado made both his free throws to just 1 of 2 for Vanterpool before Zalgiris got hot going to Beard. First he took an offensive rebound and sank a jumper, then he finished a nice pick-'n'-roll with Machado that provided the first double-digit lead for the hosts, 28-18. David Andersen stepped up for CSKA with a mid-range jumper but Beard kept at it for Zalgiris, grabbing and putting back a difficult offensive rebound to make it 30-20. CSKA's defense intensified but its offense kept turning over the ball. The visitors proved patient, however, and soon Papaloukas, Smodis, Aleksey Savrasenko and Langdon reeled off a 2-10 run that vaulted CSKA back into the lead at 32-33. Beard hit twice from the line but the finish belonged to CSKA as Papaoulas dished to Savrasenko for a layup that left a 34-35 halftime score.

Marko Popovic - Zalgiris KaunasBoth teams went scoreless through 90 seconds of the third quarter, until Machado dropped a triple to put Zalgiris in front again, 37-35. Savrasenko would tie it again for CSKA, but Ginevicius buried on more from behind the arc and Mottola added a free throw as the hosts went up 41-37. Then CSKA turned up the heat, pressuring Popovic into a turnover that sent Papaloukas on a fastbreak to tie 41-41. Zalgiris looked tired and a timeout didn't help as Andersen canned free throws and Smodis put back an offensive rebound to make it 41-45. Jonas Maciulis slowed CSKA's march momentarily with a long-range jumper and a driving layup before Holden reminded everyone he was there with a triple. And Zalgiris fans certainly won't forget how he soon silenced them by beating the shot clock with another strike from the arc before Mottola and Vanterpool traded layups and the third quarter ended with the visitors in charge, 50-55.

CSKA finished the game right at the beginning of the last quarter as Holden scored on a fade-away jumper and Smodis completed a three-point-play to boost the lead even higher, to 50-60. Zalgiris seemed to have waisted all its bullets on offense, but CSKA didn't sleep on that supposition. Savrasenko dunked on a fastbreak and Papaloukas made a layup to bury the intrigue of the game with the score fixed at 50-64 midway through the last quarter. Langdon hit another bomb from outside and Holden penetrated to widen the gap to 51-69 as CSKA defense proved relentless to the end of a dominant road win.

Head Coaches

BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Zalgiris
"It's hard to say anything after such game, in particular, after such an end of the game. The first 15-16 minutes were great. Our guys played agressive, they were really confident and just did their job on the court. Maybe the tempo with which we started the game turned against us later. It was a bit too high and we started to turn the ball over too often. CSKA is not a forgiving team, they punished us immediately. They made some difficult shots, which beat the shot clock several times, and ran away. We played patiently in the third quarter but then again turnovers and missed shots poured in. We lost our game then. We couldn't find a leader who could hit shots. Our players missed and gave up."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We are very happy for this win in Kaunas. we knew it was going to be difficult because we all remember the famous rivalry between the clubs. After a difficult start we managed to set our defense and control the rhythm of the game. The problem was that in the first quarter we accepted the tempo Zalgiris offered us. We don't play this fast. Our team is not like that. We always try to play good defense, rebound the ball really tough and organize our game off assists. It was hard for us to start playing our game but I'm happy my players have managed to stay cool and take care of the game. The key tonight was Savrasenko. he played great on both ends."

Players

POPOVIC, MARKO
Zalgiris
"CSKA is a great team. Two of their guys probably cost as much as all our team. But it's not an excuse. After all, they are simply ten guys on the court. We didn't execute our plays in the last quarter. They made us pay for all of our mistakes. CSKA plays great defense, but we still should have played better after halftime. We could have played like we did in the first two quarters. We have to work a lot if we still want to be a candidate to the Top 16. If we continue to play like this we will be miles away from Top 16."
GINEVICIUS, VIDAS
Zalgiris
"I guess our game got worse when our opponents hit some really difficult shots. I don't think we gave up. Maybe we just ran too fast, missed while CSKA didn't. That was how the margin got that big. It's hard to fight against a team like CSKA when they lead by that much. We can really play better, we didn't show all we got. We shouldn't blame others, it's just our fault."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"It was a good game. Not only we did score a lot in the last quarter, but we also played exceptional defense. We did what we needed to get the win. It turned to be a low-scoring game for Zalgiris and that's what we wanted to happen. Yes, we trailed by ten in the second quarter, but it's all about composure. We kept our heads up, showed a good character and won. We stuck to our plan, played good defense and reached our goal."
PAPALOUKAS, THEODOROS
CSKA Moscow
"In the first quarter we let Zalgiris play the way they wanted but we bounced back in the second half. We started to control the game and pass the ball to the big guys. We are a quality team and that is why we won. It's a great crowd to play basketball in front of, even if you come here as an opponent. I like to play games which are surrounded with such passion."
