THE TAKE

After a long summer, Euroleague Basketball returns to Israel on Thursday when Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv hosts Le Mans Sarthe Basket at Nokia Arena. A sell-out crowd is expected as Maccabi plays its first home game of the season, giving fans their first glimpse of new coach Oded Kattash and a new-look squad. Those fans will be looking for a win, something that visiting Le Mans won't give away without a fight. Le Mans coach Vincent Collet also rebuilt his squad this season, even signing Israeli Raviv Limonad, who'll face his old rivals in the game. Both teams have played exciting up tempo basketball in the past and that should be the same situation now. Maccabi will miss two of last season's starters who are out injured, Tal Burstein and Will Bynum, but Kattash has more than enough talent available to make up for their absence. All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic is slated to start after missing much of the preseason with a broken finger. Vujcic is the main man in a deep frontcourt that has plenty of punch thanks to Marcus Fizer, Lior Eliyahu, Terance Morris and the newly-signed Esteban Batista, who could become the first Uruguayan in Euroleague history if he plays. Le Mans's big man corps is led by Sam Clancy, with Phillip Ricci and Alain Koffi player their part too. Sharpshooter Luka Bogdanovic and rising star Nicolas Batum are Le Mans's forwards, who'll matchup against David Bluthenthal and Omri Casspi. Vonteego Cummings will be called upon to lead the Maccabi attack, with Derrick Sharp and Yotam Halperin helping out. Yannick Bokolo, Limonad and Nebojsa Bogavic are the soul of the Le Mans backcourt, which goes all out at both ends. Aside from home-court advantage – Maccabi went 10-1 at home last season – the Israeli champs also have a much larger squad, which could play a significant role in a fast-paced game. Some interesting head-to-head bouts could be Fizer facing Clancy and Cummings versus Bokolo. Former Israel youth teammates Haperin and Limonad could also wind up as a spicy face-off. Collet's biggest issue could be how to stop Vujcic, who will enjoy a height advantage over any Le Mans defender. Despite the hosts' clear advantage on the paper, Maccabi is also a new team with a new coach and a poor start could snowball in front of the home fans. So Le Mans will look to race out to an early lead with some of the team's young and confident players leading the way as it targets a sweet opening-night upset.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"I'm excited about my first game in the Euroleague as a Maccabi coach. Surely it's something special and not just any game, and that reminds me a little of the excitement I had as a player before my first Euroleague game with Maccabi. Now I'm in a different place and it's a different time, so I focus on what's in front of me. Considering the injuries we suffered in the pre-season and the fact we're at the beginning of the season, we arrive to the game in good shape. I hope the fans will come to support us, try to enjoy the game and focus on the positive sides."
COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We feel a lot of excitement to start a new Euroleague season. What's more, the draw gave us the honor to play our first game this year in one of the most mythical gyms and against one of the competition favorites. Our goal is to try to slow down their attack rhythm, but that's easier to say than to succeed in doing because there are so many talents on this Maccabi team."

Players

HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"Every season opener is exciting. We play the first game in front of our great fans so it's even more exciting and we want to do our best to give them a good reason to be happy already after the first match. It's going to be special to play against Raviv Limonad, who was my back-court partner for many years in all the Israeli youth national teams and a rival in the junior league, but we need to focus on Le Mans as a team, a very dangerous one, and respect them if we want to prevail. Surely it won't be easy. No game in the Euroleague is easy."
LIMONAD, RAVIV
Le Mans
"It’s really exciting to start the Euroleague season, and especially for me to come back to Israel, to play my first-ever Euroleague game in front of my family and friends. I hope that we will do well aganinst this strong team of Maccabi."
Yotam Halperin - Maccabi Elite Yotam Halperin had two steals, an assist and a key free throw in the last 15 seconds to lead Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv to a 74-71 season-opening win over Le Mans Sarthe Basket on Thursday night at Nokia Arena. Le Mans led for much of the second half and was up 10 late in the third quarter, behind strong play from Sam Clancy in the paint and gutsy moves from Nebojsa Bogavac. But the visitors dried up in the final minutes. For Maccabi, Nikola Vujcic stepped up down the stretch, feeding Lior Eliyahu twice to keep Maccabi close and then hitting a three to tie the game, setting the stage for Halperin’s heroics. The Maccabi guard came up big when he was needed the most to guarantee the win. Halperin led Maccabi with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists and Vujcic had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. David Bluthenthal added 12 points and team captain Derrick Sharp 11. Clancy finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds, Bogavac added 12 and Luka Bogdanovic 10. Nicolas Batum added 9 points and 6 steals and big man Alain Koffi posted 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Maccabi won the opening tip, but it was Le Mans that struck first via Batum. The hosts missed a few open shots early, causing coach Oded Kattash to take his first timeout less than two minutes in. Nevertheless, a Clancy tip-in made it 0-6 before a Halperin three-pointer finally got Maccabi into the game. Clancy and Vujcic traded points in the paint, but a Bogdanovic jumper kept the Le Mans ahead 7-14. The momentum started to turn after a Halpein drive and an offensive foul on Clancy. Marcus Fizer fed Halperin for a three-point play that cut the deficit to 2. Philip Ricci came off the bench for the visitors and his physical presence inside helped them stay ahead. A Vonteego Cummings basket followed by Sharp free throws tied it at 18-18, however Bogavac drilled a three from the corner to restore Le Mans’s lead. Halperin tied the game again with a three-point play and than layed in an easy fast-break score to give him 13 points and Maccabi its first lead, 25-23, at the end of the opening period.

Sam Clancy - Le MansBluthenthal scored inside to get things going for Tel Aviv in the second period, but Le Mans hung tough with Clancy’s offensive rebound and basket making it 28-27. Halperin took advantage of a mismatch with Ricci to draw a foul and put the hosts up 5 from the line and then Bluthenthal drilled as Maccabi gained the upper hand. Bogavac’s hustle inspired the rest of the Le Mans defense, leading to a Koffi basket an a Batum slam, bringing the visitors within 35-33. Despite another Tel Aviv timeout, Le Mans remained in control on defense and a Bogdnovic triple knotted the score at 36-36 and Bogavac’s free throws restored the visitors’ lead. Maccabi turned to Vujcic inside and a Terence Morris block on defense lifted the crowd, leading to a Sharp three. Antoine Diot’s transition basket put Le Mans up once more, 41-42, and after Bluthenthal missed from the corner, it remained that way at halftime.

Batum fired a three early in the third period to show that Le Mans meant business. Sharp answered in form, but an energized Clancy threw down a two-handed jam for a 46-49 advantage for the visitors. Bluthenthal’s jump hook was met by Bogavac free throws. Then Clancy banked in a jumper to hush the crowd. Bogavac added a triple to cap a 0-7 spurt that made it 48-56. Sharp stepped up on both ends with a short jumper and a steal, but he went to the well once too many and hiss missed three led to a Koffi score on the offensive boards. Koffi added a baseline jumper to give Le Mans its first double-digit lead. Maccabi called upon Esteban Batista to change things, but he was no factor as Batum kept the visitors in control. In the closing seconds of the period, Clancy was called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Lior Eliyahu, which led to 2 free throws and a Sharp buzzer-beater to give the Israeli champs some momentum heading into the last 10 minutes down 56-62

Nikola Vujcic - Maccabi EliteThe fourth quarter got off to a slow start with neither scoring for the first two-and-a-half minutes. Bogdanovic fired in a three that silenced the arena, but Eliyahu threw down a rim-rocker and Bluthenthal hit a baseline jumper to bring Maccabi within 5. Clancy came back with a slam, after which he let out a scream, however Vujcic responded calmly and then Cumming fed Eliyahu for an easy two. The fans rose to their feet after a defensive stop and Vujcic hit a triple from the top of the key to cap a 7-0 spurt and tie the game at 67-67. After a Le Mans timeout, Raviv Limonad scored, but Vujcic fed Eliyahu to keep things even with three minutes to go. Eliyahu then blocked Limonad from behind and Halperin put Maccabi up for the first time since the second quarter with two free throws. Both teams suddenly went cold and it was Clancy that bounced back to tie it again with 56 seconds left. An offensive foul on Bluthenthal gave Le Mans a chance to regain the lead. The visitors held on for the last shot, but Halperin stripped Bogavac and fed Morris for a wide-open layup to change the outcome of the game. Le Mans had one more sot, but Halperin stole the ball again and made a free throw with 3.3 seconds left to secure the win.

Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"I think the reception from the fans before the game was amazing and I think we were all affected by it in some way, particularly those that experienced it for the first time. Many suffered from over-motivation. We couldn't develop the game we wanted except for a mini-run that got us back in the game. I had a plan to let as many players as possible play in the first half, so I could feel them and see who had the best momentum, but it didn't work. We didn't have enough players with confidence tonight and that led to many missed shots and turnovers. We didn't control the rebounds and that kept us from running. They attacked the boards with five players. A good team knows how to punish when that happens and we couldn't do that tonight."
COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We are very disappointed, because we played the game we wanted to play for 19 minutes and did not win. We wanted to force Tel Aviv to play as long as possible on each possession and I think we did it well for the better part of the game. But we couldn't finish it off and we turned the ball over three straight times at the end. It's unfortunate for my team who played courageous. We knew it would be better to play Maccabi today than in a month."

Players

ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Elite
"We didn't play well. We don't have a lot of good things to take from this game. We have a lot of new players, who needed to get used to the atmosphere and we saw that in the beginning. We missed some easy shots, and that made us chase after them, but I'm happy we managed to pull out the win."
HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"Everybody knows we have a short rotation in the back court because of the injuries and it was effecting us. We didn't do what we worked on in the last few days. It was a tough game, but the important thing is that we won it, and started on the right foot. We'll try to improve from here on."
BOGDANOVIC, LUKA
Le Mans
"Nobody expected us to win before the game because Maccabi is one of the biggest teams in Europe and we are probably the youngest team in the Euroleague, but we gave a very good fight and came close to winning. We're young and don't have a lot of experience, and I think that's what made the difference in the end. I can't say I'm happy because we lost, but there are some good things we can take from this game, and that's the big fight we gave to Maccabi. It showed us we can play against the top teams in Europe."
