THE TAKE

Two classic Euroleague clubs are set to face each other at Hala Tivoli in Ljubljana, Slovenia, when Union Olimpija welcomes Tau Ceramica in Group C on Thursday. These teams have faced each other nine times in the past, but their most important matchup came in 1994, when Olimpija downed Tau Ceramica in the Saporta Cup final to win its only European club title. Olimpija registered a 81-64 road loss against DKV Joventut in its Euroleague opener last week, while Tau defeated Fenerbahce Ulker 80-70 in the Euroleague Opening Game. There is some good news for Tau, as All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter has recovered from his injury and will be available to face Olimpija. Tau did not suffer much with him out as center Will McDonald stepped up and earned Week 1 MVP honors with a 32 index against Fener. Splitter and McDonald lead a battery of big men that also includes Stanko Barac and three-point threat Mirza Teletovic. Olimpija has its heart and soul in Marko Milic, who will be highly motivated in Olimpija's Euroleague home opener this season. Mirza Begic comes off an outstanding game - 17 points and 7 rebounds - against Joventut last week while Vladimir Golubovic shined in the Adriatic League this weekend. Miha Zupan will try to add size and talent against Splitter and McDonald. With Jasmin Hukic still sidelined, players like Saso Ozbolt, Jaka Klobucar and Damjan Rudez are set to see extended playing time in coach Aleksandar Dzikic's rotation. Ozbolt and Klobucar will have the tough mission to stop Igor Rakocevic, a former Alphonso Ford Top Scorer trophy winner, who had 26 points in Ljubljana last season. Meanwhile, Rudez will test his skills against small forward Pete Mickeal in one of the key matchups in this game. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, as Olimpija features Vlado Ilievski and Jonathan Wallace. Ilievski will face another experienced playmaker like Pablo Prigioni. Mustafa Shakur will share the point guard duties with Prigioni, who is not 100% yet and will play despite suffering from nagging injuries since the beginning of the season. Olimpija must get its frontcourt involved and take advantage on the fact that the team will be supported by thousands of diehard fans. If Tau manages to play for Rakocevic and Mickeal, it will have a good chance to stay unbeaten in the 2008-09 Euroleague.

GAME QUOTES

Union Olimpija
  • Union Olimpija defeated Tau Ceramica in the 1994 Saporta Cup final, but has lost six straight games against the club since then.
  • Center Vladimir Golubovic had his best game yet in an Olimpija uniform over the weekend with 25 points, 10 rebounds and a 35 index rating to earn Adriatic League Week 5 MVP honors as his team beat Vojvodina.
  • Vlado Ilevski set a Euroleague career-high with 6 steals against Tau Ceramica in a December 2002 game.
  • Center Mirza Begic, who led Olimpija with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the club’s season opener last week, scored more in that game than he did in his first six games combined last season (15).
Tau Ceramica
  • Week 1 MVP Will McDonald is coming off his best ever Euroleague performance. He scored 18 points on perfect shooting and added 8 rebounds and 5 blocks last week against Fenerbahce Ulker.
  • Center Tiago Splitter, who missed last week’s opener due to injury, enters his team’s Week 2 game needing just 10 points to reach 1,000 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Guard Igor Rakocevic needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Rakocevic, a former Alphonso Ford Top Scorer trophy winner, matched his Euroleague career-high with 26 points against Olimpija in Ljubljana last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Union Olimpija
"For us, every game is life or death. Just as we went to Badalona last week to try to beat Joventut, we will start this game against Tau with the single though of beating our opponent. We are well aware that Tau is a big favorite, not only in this game, but in Group C generally and in the whole Euroleague this season. But we want to begin this great competition with a victory in front of our loyal spectators. I am sure that the fans in Ljubljana know that this is basketball of the highest global level and that they will come in great numbers to the arena to support us. We have to keep uppermost in our minds that Tau's players are made of flesh and blood, too."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"I consider Olimpija Ljubljana could be one of the biggest surprises of this Euroleague season, like Partizan was in the last one. They count on very good players and some of them are well-known in Spain, like Marko Milic, who played for Real Madrid, or Vlado Ilievski, who played for Barcelona. They are especially dangerous at home because of their fans. They gain confidence and play better. We must be aware of that. Sergi Vidal won’t travel to Slovenia because of his shoulder injury, he has been doing some workouts, but without ball. On the other hand, Prigioni and Splitter haven’t practiced since Monday, and both are doubtful for Thursday’s game."

"Everyone knows that in Badalona we had our chances to beat Joventut, but in the last five minutes we made too many mistakes and, due to our inexperience, lost a game that we could have won. Our anger at losing that opportunity could be seen by our last Adriatic League opponent, Vojvodina, and what's left we will save for Tau. We have to start the Euroleague with a home win and in that way show that our arena, Tivoli, won't be an easy stop for any team. We have to show our character, play aggressively and concentrate all 40 minutes. With the help of our fans, I think we can surprise one of the best teams in the Euroleague."
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Tau Ceramica
"I feel better as the time goes on. I hope I can play a good game soon to show I can be helpful to this team. Playing in the Euroleague is a nice experience, quite different than playing domestic competitions. In Euroleague games, you have to be ready for a very demanding fight, it’s physically tougher. Union Olimpija is a dangerous team. We cannot take this game as an easy one, especially when they are playing on the road. They play different basketball than we are used to seeing here, with many players able to shoot from outside and playing with a lot of open spaces. They also count on a very big center like Begic, so it will hard to beat them for sure."
Tiago Splitter and Mirza Teletovic - Tau CeramicaTau Ceramica survived a tough test and stayed undefeated in Group C by edging Union Olimpija 90-91 in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Thursday. Damjan Rudez answered from downtown but McDonald dunked it to keep Tau way ahead, 35-44. Ozbolt and Pete Mickeal traded free throws and even when Golubovic dunked it, Teletovic buried a corner triple for a 39-49 Tau lead. Golubovic and McDonald traded uncontested dunks while a jumper by Shakur fixed the halftime score at 41-53.

Ozbolt tried to ignit the hosts' comeback with a three-pointer immediately after the break but Teletovic - who else? - answered from downtown and soon added a tip-in for a 44-58 Tau lead. Rakocevic soon added a fast break layup to break the game open to make Olimpija call timeout at 44-60. San Emeterio followed free throws with a three-pointer to make it an 18-point game, 47-65. Golubovic scored inside but a red hot San Emeterio struck again from downtown and Rakocevic added an outstanding layup to boost the guests' lead to 49-70. Rudez nailed a triple and Milic added an easy basket to get the crowd involved. Ilievski bankedin a shot for a 55-72 deficit. Rakocevic and Ozbolt traded layups while Milic shined with a fast break dunk to get Olimpija even closer, 59-74. Milic followed a layup with an incredible, off-balance three-point play to get Olimpija even closer, 64-74. Shakur took over with an acrobatic reverse layup but Ozbolt got Olimpija within 66-76 after 30 minutes.

Shakur silenced the crowd with a three-pointer right at the start of the second quarter but Olimpija kept fighting. Begic shined with a power layup, as Tau tried to slow down the game tempo to keep the game clock running. Prigioni took over with a three-pointer but Wallace followed free throws with a bomb from downtown to get Olimpija within 73-82 with 6 minutes to go. Begic made foul shots but Splitter improved that with a three-point play. Begic insisted with a put-back layup and free throws while Milic brought Olimpija back in the game, 81-85, with 3:27 to go. Begic took over with an incredible move in the low post that Splitter matched in the other end. Splitter and Ilievski traded free throws while a turnaround jumper by Begic got Olimpija within 87-89 with 1:10 remaining. Teletovic missed a three-point shot while Wallace struck from downtown to complete the hosts' comeback, 90-89, with 24.6 seconds to go. Teletovic missed again from downtown but Splitter grabbed the offensive board, allowing him to score in penetration with 2.7 seconds remaining. It all came down to the final shot but Ilievski missed an off-balance jumper at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Union Olimpija
"We lost the game, but could have also won it. We managed to rally from a 21-point deficit and get back in the game. We are a young team that is still learning to play at this level and win tough, balanced games. I believe that we can only play better in the future. We did not play well in the first half, allowing Teletovic a lot of space for open shots. We showed the material we are made of after the break."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"It was a very interesting game. We played well in the opening three quarters. We didn't play good defense in the fourth quarter and stopped believing in ourselves. Union Olimpija showed they have good players and that they can beat any Euroleague team, especially here at Tivoli."

Players

OZBOLT, SASO
Union Olimpija
"Tau won the game, but if we had, it would have also been a well-deserved win. I am happy to see that we are able to rally from a 20-point deficit. It all came down to one shot, but it didn't fall in."
MILIC, MARKO
Union Olimpija
"It is a shame to lose this way against such a strong team, especially when we erased our deficit and were two seconds away from winning the game. We have to keep believing in ourselves. If we play the way we did in the second half, good wins will come."
BARAC, STANKO
Tau Ceramica
"We played really well in the first half, but everything changed after the break, when our game was far from being perfect. We were lucky in the end to escape with a win."
SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Tau Ceramica
"We had trouble with their zone defense. It is something that has been happening to us for a while. We must solve this problem as soon as possible. We won the game in the end, but I must say that I would feel awfully bad if we had lost tonight."
