THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas returns to the comforts of home looking for its first victory in Last 16 Group L as it hosts Iurbentia Bilbao. Head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis's L. Rytas has proved a tale of two teams losing its Last 16 opener 78-74 at Spirou - the team's fourth loss on the road in four Eurocup games. But the 2005 ULEB Cup winner won all three of its Regular Season home games in Vilnius, Lithuania. Against Spirou, L. Rytas slumped to just 44% from two-point range and made just 22 of 32 (69%) free throws. Forward Chuck Eidson was his usual outstanding self with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals while forward Donatas Zavackas hit 4 three-pointers in adding 22 points. And while center Marijonas Petravicius chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds, the other starters - guard Mindaugas Lukauskis and forward Arturas Jomantas - combined for just 4 points in 52 minutes of action. Kurtinaitis knows he needs more balanced production. And with its problems on the road, L. Rytas pretty much faces a must-win situation against Bilbao. Iurbentia Bilbao meanwhile looks to remain undefeated in the Eurocup after holding off a second half comeback by Artland Dragons and pulling away for a 71-62 win at home. Head coach Txus Vidorreta’s Spanish side from Bilbao excelled on defense, holding Artland to 38% from two-point range and 6 of 20 (30%) from long range. Bilbao, however, nearly blew a 17-point lead and needed a late run for the victory as the team made just 5 of 22 (23%) from long range as well as just 18 of 27 (67%) free throws. Vidorreta’s men used a big rebounding advantage early as well as 10 first half offensive rebounds in building the lead and winning the battle of the boards 42-34. Center Drago Pasalic led the way with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Guard Renaldas Seibutis added 13 points while newly-acquired forward Damir Markota came off the bench for 7 points and 9 rebounds. Vidorreta hopes that his team can find its form from long range and a big help in that category would be guard Javi Salgado, who scored just 7 points with just 1 three-pointer after averaging 12 points in the Regular Season. Vidorreta also needs more production from his starters as forward Marko Banic, forward Quincy Lewis and guard Janis Blums combined for just 15 points. With the games gaining more and more meaning, the European debutant Bilbao will have to overcome its next test.

Quotes Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Our strategy in the Last 16 doesn't really change. We must win every game at home and at least one away. It should be enough for us to get to the next round. I'd believed we would win in Belgium, a win there would have been really important. But even now, nothing changes. We must prevail in Vilnius and look for opportunities in Germany and Italy. Everybody's saying Bilbao is bigger. But we'll see which team's bigger."
VIDORRETA, TXUS
iurbentia Bilbao
"The game is going to be really tough. In the last weeks they have lost Milisavljevic to Cajasol in Spain, and coach Kurtinaitis is relying on local talent for Lietuvos Rytas. They are a team with European tradition these last seasons, and they even managed to win one ULEB Cup title and reach the final on another occasion. I am sure they really want to make the Turin Final Eight and if they lose again against us they will have it difficult, so I am sure they will be strong in this game. They are a physical team with big players in the backcourt that know how to alternate positions, making it hard to guard them. They are a complete team with good dynamics."

"I wasn't surprised by Lietuvos Rytas' loss at Spirou Basket, because all the teams in the Last 16 are more than prepared for this kind of games. However, the Lietuvos Rytas of the road games is not that similar to the one playing at home and packing the Siemens Arena. They are young players, with a coach that injects character to the team and with a hot crowd. We will have to be concentrated and play a serious game."
Chuck Eidson - Lietuvos RytasLietuvos Rytas registered its first win in Last 16 Group L by edging previously undefeated iurbentia Bilbao Basket 75-73 in front of 7,500 fans in Vilnius, Lithuania on Tuesday. Paco Vazquez took over with a power layup while Salgado sank a huge triple to give Bilbao some hope, 44-38. Bjelica got the crowd involved with a wild dunk but Recker struck from downtown off a Bilbao timeout. Eidson answered with an acrobatic layup. Recker buried another triple, igniting a 0-8 run that Seibutis capped with a layup-plus-foul to complete the guests' comeback, 48-49. Salgado made free throws, Recker sank a six-meter jumper while Banic beat the buzzer with a layup for a 52-55 Bilbao edge after 30 minutes. Zavackas sank a triple early in the fourth quarter while Eidson also joined the three-point shootout. Salgado answered from downtown but Bjelica provided another lead change, 61-60. Pasalic sank a long jumper that Lewis followed with a backdoor layup for a 61-64 Bilbao edge. Zavackas fired in a three-pointer but Seibutis kept Bilbao ahead, 64-66, with 4 minutes to go. Lukauskis sank a triple and soon added an outstanding four-point play for a 71-68 Bilbao edge. Banic shined with a fast break layup but he missed around the basket with 42 seconds to go. Eidson missed in the other end, too, and L. Rytas immediately fouled on Salgado, who made 1-for-2 free throws for a 71-71 tie. Petravicius stepped up with a power layup with 5.1 seconds to go. He missed the free throw that came with it and even when Salgado raced downcourt, he could not hit a running jumper at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"We managed to beat a very good team that lost for the first time in the competition. I feel good about the way my team worked tonight, especially in defense. We wanted to have the last possession at the end of the game, so this is why we fouled in the final seconds. It is a big risk to see opponents having the last offense. We missed way too many free throws, more than 10. We cannot afford that if we want to get to the Final Eight."
VIDORRETA, TXUS
iurbentia Bilbao
"The game was really intense. We played hard for the first five minutes, but the hosts stepped up with some tough defense at the end of the first quarter and later and ran ahead by 10 points. Of course, we managed to come back and had our chances to win. So I am actually satisfied by our game, but not about the final score."

Players

EIDSON, CHUCK
Lietuvos Rytas
"I am really glad we won. I don't even care about what went wrong, I am just happy that we won the game. It got pretty ugly in the fourth quarter, but we pushed through successfully. About my own performance, I think I started out well, but after the break, I shook the rim mostly. Honestly, I am not sure what's wrong with my free throw shooting groove. I guess it is adrenaline in my blood that is shaking my hand."
JOMANTAS, ARTURAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"We heard some pretty ugly words from the coach right after the game, but also praises for the last few minutes, which he said we played quite solidly. Most importantly, we won. Other than that, our game was not really good. We missed free throws and a lot of comfortable shots inside."
