THE TAKE

Group E’s opening night winners, Galatasaray Café Crown and Bennet Cantu, face off Tuesday night in Istanbul to determine who will remain there by the end of Week 2. Galatasaray, who edged out a road win against Gasterra Flames, look forward to a less nerve wrecking game at home versus Cantu and hope to get off to a good start with point guards Tutku Acik and Taylor Rochestie running the show. The long term answer should be in the paint, however, as head coach Oktay Mahmuti’s best man is still power forward Radoslav Rancik, who can score in a variety of ways. Evren Buker will be ready to spell him whenever he needs a break, as the benches will have to produce for both teams to contend. Cantu has some firepower there with athletic guard Jonathan Tabu and sharpshooter Michele Mian. Nicolas Mazzarino can also quickly fill it up from beyond the arc on the Italian side, as head coach Andrea Trinchieri will look for him to stretch the host’s defense, where imposing center Luksa Andric will patrol the paint, with Ermal Kugo ready to help out in rebounding duties. Preston Shumpert is a well-rounded veteran who can do many things at the forward spot and could get to defend crafty Vladimir Micov, who still gets the brunt of the minutes over Tabu for the visitors. Big men Ben Ortner and veteran Denis Marconato should provide some quality minutes for Cantu, who will try to push the tempo whenever possible with point guard Mike Green.

"Of course the game is very important for us. Is the first game on the road and winning will give us a big push to the Last 16. It will be very difficult because Galatasaray is one of the best teams and is coming out from a great win against GasTerra Flames. For sure the want to play the best they can in front of their people."
Luksa Andric - Galatasaray Cafe CrownGalatasaray Café Crown stormed to its second win of the young Eurocup season by beating Bennet Cantu 76-57 on Tuesday in Istanbul. With the game tied 22-22 in the second quarter, Ermal Kuqo fueled a 10-0 Gala run that gave the hosts control of the game and a 40-26 halftime lead. Maarten Leunen helped cut the gap to 44-38 early in the third quarter, but Luksa Andric took over inside and Cantu had no answers. The lead continued to swell throughout the second half, reaching 24 points, as Galatasaray celebrated its second win. Andric paced the winners with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, Taylor Rochestie added 14 by going 4 for 4 from downtown and Kuqo added 12. Galatasaray puts its 2-0 record on the line next week against Panellinios BC. Vladimir Micov led Cantu with 14 points and Leunen finished with 10 for Cantu, which dropped to 1-1 and visits GasTerra Flames next week.

Galatasaray started strong with an Andric slam and a Rochestie triple, but Cantu closed the gap quickly through Ben Ortner. Micov knotted the game at 7-7 with a triple. Josh Shipp caught fire and lifted the hosts ahead again and Kuqo made it 14-9, but it was even again when Michele Mian connected from downtown. Kuqo converted on the offensive glass to give Galatasaray an 18-16 lead after 10 minutes. Manu Markoishvili and Ortner managed to tie the game three more times, but soon Galatasaray made its move. Kuqo scored twice inside, Tutku Acik converted in transition, Preston Shumpert added a jumper and Rado Rancik made a pair of free throws to account for a 10-0 run. Rancik and Rochestie added triples to help the home team take a 40-26 lead at the half.

Kuqo took the Galatasaray lead to 15 at the start of the second half before Cantu found an answer. Micov scored and Leunen tacked on a three to close the gap to 10. Leunen remained a factor and Mike Green added a steal and a layup to get Cantu as close as 44-38. The Cantu defense stymied the hosts, but on the attack the visitors missed four shots from downtown in trying to cut the gap further. Acik ended a drought for Galatasaray with a triple and after Leunen scored on the offensive glass, Andric restored a double-digit lead. Mike Green netted a pair of free throws, but Andric scored twice to put Galatasaray up 56-42 with one quarter left to play. Canto had no answer for Andric and despite a Markoishvili three, Andric lifted the lead further and Rochestie connected from downtown to put the hosts up 20. Even after a Micov triple, Galatasaray continued to stretch the lead, peaking at 75-51 on an Evren Buker layup en route to a big win.

"I should complain more about our offense given the few points we scored, but I am very angry about our defense. We suffered from their physicality. We took some open three-point shots, but unfortunately, especially in the first half, we did not make them."
