THE TAKE

Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas can pull into a tie for first place in Group G as it entertains first placed ASCO Slask Wroclaw. Coach Salvador Maldonado's Gran Canaria dropped to 3-2 with a road loss at Asvel Basket. The Spanish team struggled from the outside, hitting just 6-of-23 (26%) from downtown, and Asvel won the rebounding battle 35-30 to win those few crucial extra possessions. All told, Maldonado's team shot 50% for the game, but it couldn't make up for the weak outside shooting. Shooting guard Carl English again led Gran Canaria with 22 points while Maldonado's remaining starters played a bigger part in scoring - with 30 points to 34 for the reserve players. But it did not produce a victory. A win at home against Slask however would pull the teams even at 4-2. And Maldonado's team will have the added motivation of losing in Poland in Week One. Slask, for its part, improved to 4-1 by easing past Kalev/Cramo. Coach Andrzej Adamek's Wroclaw side shot 55% for the game and committed just 9 turnovers while holding Kalev/Cramo to 39% from the field. Playmaker Rashid Atkins led the way with 23 points and 4 assists while center Jared Homan had 13 points and 11 rebounds. A road victory in Spain would be very important for Adamek's team as it would be guaranteed sole possession of first place and remain at least one game ahead of the ever-growing battle for the next four spots in Group G.

Sitapha Savane - Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas scored a crucial 82-71 win over Asco Slask Wroclaw in the top-class match in Group C on Tuesday. Gran Canaria moved into a three-way tie for first place in the group standings, joining Slask Wroclaw and Asvel Basket with 4-2 records. Next up for Gran Canaria is a trip to Germany to face Ludwigsburg, while Slask hosts Panionios next week. The game was balanced during the first 30 minutes with Gran Canaria leading 59-56, but a 13-4 run early in the last quarter decided the match. Joel Freeland was the main contributor for Gran Canaria with 15 points and 6 rebounds, Kornel David added 12 points, while Sitapha Savane and Sergio Perez had 11 apiece. Dawan Robinson led Asco Slask Wroclaw with 13 points. Gai Deng added 10 points and 6 boards for the visitors, who had a poor night from downtown, making just 2 of 13 from downtown.

Freeland gave Gran Canaria a 13-8 lead before Jared Homan tied it at 15-15. Savane’s jumper from the top of the key made it 17-15 in favor of the hosts at the end of the first quarter. Dawan Robinson started on fire the second quarter put Wroclaw in front 19-23. Robereto Guerra capped an 8-0 Gran Canaria run from downtown to restore the hosts’ lead by the midway point of the quarter. Torrell Martin tied it again at 29-29. The teams exchanged leads before Freeland again scored from short range to make it 38-35 at halftime. Deng tied it early in the third quarter at 39-39, but Carl English from downtown gave another cushion to the hosts. It remained back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter with Marcus Norris scoring the basket to give Gran Canaria a 59-56 lead after 30 minutes. The beginning of the last quarter was the key to the game, with Gran Canria sparking a 13-4 run capped by Perez from beyond the arc, as the hosts went ahead 72-60, after which Canaria never looked back and maintained a safe cushion till the final buzzer.
