THE TAKE

This battle of former Soviet teams will decide which side starts Group H with two straight wins. BC Kyiv pulled off a big road victory at Benetton Treviso in an evenly-played game. Marcus Faison and Eugene Jeter showed their all-around excellence while Viacheslav Kravtsov occupied the blocks for Tomo Mahoric. ASK Riga travel to Ukraine after beating Lukoil Academic in the ULEB Cup opener in Latvia. Ramunas Butautas's team forced the Bulgarians into 22 turnovers and received balanced scoring. One concern the team from the Latvian capital should have is their outside shooting, as they hit just 5-of-29 three-pointers (26%).

Eugene Jeter scored 17 points and dished out five assists in leading Ukrainian powerhouse BC Kyiv to a 79-67 victory over ASK Riga and give Kyiv a 2-0 record in Group H. The playmaker Jeter led an 18-0 third quarter run from which the Latvians never were able to recover in falling to 1-1. Forward Artur Drozdov added 14 points and forward Marko Maravic scored 12 points for coach Tomo Mahoric's winners. Kyiv again play at home next week against ULEB Cup regulars Pau Orthez from France while ASK Riga travel to Germany to play Artland Dragons. Coach Ramunas Butautas's Riga team was led by 13 points from small forward Dwayne Broyles while center Aaron Bramlet had 10 points and 11 rebounds and sharpshooter Sandis Valters chipped in 12 points off the bench.

Jeter got the hosts on the board first while Aerick Sanders gave Riga a 5-9 early lead. Neither side could really gain much control of the quarter, which ended dead even 16-16. Riga center Raitis Grafs hit the first five points of the second but Kyiv remained in the game. ASK wing Valters knocked down two three-pointers for a 36-38 advantage only to see Jeter hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer for a 41-40 score-line at the break. Kyiv coach Mahoric's troops came out of the locker-room with high intensity and Jeter nailed three baskets and Drozdov scored five points in an 18-0 surge to open a 59-42 lead. The Latvians crawled to within 61-48 going into the fourth. But Kyiv center Joshua Davis set the tone for the final 10 minutes with a long bomb, and Maravic's trey made it 69-50. Jeter's foul shot gave Kyiv a 79-61 late lead, which ASK cut down with three-pointers in the final seconds by Marko Antonijevic and Broyles.

BC Kyiv head coach Tomo Mahoric:

"We had some problems controlling the boards, but this was caused by us having to stop Riga's shooters. Despite this, I am happy we accomplished the main goal. Marco Maravic's injury is very unfortunate and tomorrow we'll see how serious it is."

BC Kyiv center Ryan Stack

"We did not have a very good start to the game, but managed to turn it around in the second half. This is just the start of the season and we have plenty of time left to improve and advance as far as possible in the ULEB Cup."

ASK Riga head coach Ramunas Butautas

"We were missing injured players Kalve, Millage and Vilums. You also have to understand that we are now playing in three different leagues – domestic league, Baltic League and ULEB Cup – and this can explain what happened to us in the third quarter. Still, I do not want to blame my players; you saw how they were hustling until the very end."

ASK Riga guard Sandis Buskevics

"The game plan we had for tonight was to slow Kyiv down and not to allow them to run the floor. We coped with it during the first half, but relaxed in the second, missed a lot of easy shots and allowed Kyiv to make the run. Kyiv is a very strong team, but they do not seem unbeatable, so we'll try to avenge this loss in Riga."
