THE TAKE

Asefa Estudiantes hosts Cedevita Zagreb Wednesday night at the Palacio Vistalegre in Madrid for deciding Game 2 in their Eurocup quarterfinals series. After Game 1 went to Cedevita 90-81 at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center in Zagreb, Estudiantes will need to validate its home-court advantage in order to erase the 9-point difference that separates them from a spot in the Eurocup Finals in Treviso. Estudiantes has not yielded a home defeat since falling to Benetton Bwin in Week 3 of the regular season, although Cedevita has proven time and time again it can dance with the big boys on their floor, topping Unics and Gran Canaria, among other road victims. The Croatian squad enjoyed big games from usual suspects Damjan Rudez and Dontaye Draper in Game 1, although Bracey Wright was kept somewhat in check by the Estudiantes backcourt. Regardless, Luis Casimiro’s men will need to be on high alert at all times against Cedevita’s high pick-and-roll game. Sergio Sanchez was the only consistent perimeter producer in Zagreb and the hosts hope dynamic guard Hernan Jasen plays a major role this time around. Against the visitor’s sometimes all-or-nothing approach, Estudiantes will have to keep focused on the task at hand and a 9-point deficit is definitely surmountable if the backcourt tandem of Jayson Granger and Albert Oliver can control the tempo and big men German Gabriel and Josh Asselin can get going inside. Gabriel struggled at times against the pace of Vedran Vukusic and Franko Kastropil, and things won’t get any easier with the return of center Corsley Edwards, who has been sidelined for the past month due to a left leg injury. In Cedevita’s frantic system, guards like Tomislav Petrovic can also spring for 8 rebounds, so it will be important for Tyronne Ellis and Jiri Welsch to be alert on loose balls at all times for the home side. Marino Bazdaric can hurt Estudiantes with his shooting and Robert Troha played a major role at both ends of the floor last time around. The visitors’ main concern will be Nik Caner-Medley once more, as the high-scoring forward has carried Estudiantes for many games this season and can rise up to the challenge when the stakes are high. And they definitely are at this juncture: with Game 1 a non-stop, offensive-minded affair, it will be interesting to see whether or not both teams drift towards another shootout in Game 2.

Quotes Head Coaches

PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"The first game was a good one with many people at the arena. We are 9 points behind for this second game in Madrid, but I think that we can come back and take the series at home. Cedevita is a good team and it is hard to defend their shooters, especially Draper. They didn't make the Quarterfinals by chance, that's for sure."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"I said before that we have 80 minutes in the Quarterfinals and only the first half is behind us. If we want to be in the Finals we must have good shooting for two and three, good defense, good jumping night and good focus. Estudiantes is a very strong team in Madrid so I would give them some small percentage more than to us for the win. We must be ready to give maximum power in the game and stop outside players like Granger and Jasen and be ready for all the traps in this very demanding game. We are not the team who can defend result so we will go to win in Madrid as our only game plan."

Players

CANER-MEDLEY, NIK
Asefa Estudiantes
"Cedevita is a team that shoots incredibly well. In Game 1 they got hot and we allowed them to pull a 17-point difference. But we manage to fix it somehow and I think that 9 points at home is something we can accomplish. We have a big gym so that it becomes a hard place to play in for them. Now we really know how Cedevita plays and we know what we have to do to be in the Finals. There are still 40 minutes left in this eliminatory round."
DRAPER, DONTAYE
Cedevita Zagreb
"I believe that all the team is totally ready and aware of the importance of this game. All of us are ready for the challenge. We are confident and had some good wins as guests in the Eurocup this season, so I think that confidence will be the key of the game. Of course we go there thinking about a victory because we can't go to Madrid with the knowledge that a 9-point difference is enough for the Finals. We had strong support of the fans in Zagreb and we have an obligation to give our maximum in Madrid."
Bracey Wright - Cedevita (photo kkcedevita.hr)Cedevita Zagreb reached the Eurocup Finals! Cedevita earnt the right to keep fighting for the Eurocup title by beating Asefa Estudiantes 72-81 in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday night. Cedevita swept the two way, total-point series and went all the way from the Qualifying Rounds to the Finals. Bracey Wright paced the winners with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Vedran Vukusic added 15 points while Dontaye Draper had 13 for Cedevita. German Gabriel and Pancho Jasen led Estudiantes with 12 points apiece. Ty Ellis added 11, Sergio Sanchez had 10 while Nik Caner-Medley pulled down 12 rebounds for the hosts, that led 21-15 early. Damjan Rudez and Wright allowed Cedevita to get a 25-26 edge after 10 minutes. Cedevita managed to trade baskets for the best part of the game and back-to-back triples by Tomislav Petrovic broke the game open, 59-66, early in the fourth quarter. Estudiantes never recovered, allowing Cedevita to celebrate the biggest win - so far - in club history.

Back-to-back layups by Josh Asselin and Jiri Welsch ignited a 7-1 opening run that Sanchez capped with a three-pointer. Vedran Vukusic sank free throws but Sanchez struck again from downtown to send the crowd to their feet, 10-3. Draper joined the three-point shootout but free throws by Caner-Medley and a jumper by Welsch gave Estudiantes a 14-6 lead. Wright rescued Cedevita with consecutive layups and Draper soon brought the guests within 16-13. Jasen scored down low and Caner-Medley soon restored a 21-15 lead. Wright and Rudez kept pacing Cedevita and a layup by Vedran Princ got the guests within 23-21. A layup-plus-foul by Wright soon gave Cedevita its first lead, 23-24. Gabriel sank free throws that an unstoppable Wright matched with a long jumper for a 25-26 score after 10 minutes.

Wright took over with an acrobatic basket early in the second quarter. Gabriel scored in the low post and a three-pointer by Ellis put Estudiantes back ahead, 30-28. Sanchez stayed on fire with a six-meter jumper that Princ matched with a driving layup in transition. A jumper by an inspired Gabriel forced coach Aca Petrovic to call timeout at 34-30. Jay Granger took over with an off-balance layup, as Estudiantes dominated the boards through an incredible Caner-Medley - 10 rebounds in 14 minutes. Cedevita improved its defense and used a 0-7 run that Wright capped with a bomb from downtown to regain the lead, 36-37. Marino Badzaric made free throws but Daniel Clark and a wild dunk by Caner-Medley tied it at 39-39. Ellis buried his second triple but free throws by Wright kept Cedevita within 42-41 at halftime.

Vukusic picked up his fourth foul immediately after the break, making Cedevita change its game plan right away. Draper and Granger traded layups but a power basket by Vukusic gave the guests a 44-45 edge. Sanchez scored in penetration but Vukusic scored on fire with back-to-back baskets. Cedevita entered the foul bonus and switched to a zone defense. Caner-Medley and Jasen sank free throws to tie it at 49-49. Vukusic shined with another layup that Jasen matched with a jump hook. Princ buried a big three-pointer and Vukusic copied him right after that to force Estudiantes to call timeout at 51-57. Jasen and Ellis made foul shots but the hosts kept missing shots from downtown. Wright made foul shots but Gabriel bettered that with a triple for a 57-60 Estudiantes deficit after 30 minutes.

Petrovic struck from downtown early in the fourth quarter, as Cedevita tried to use long possessions to run the game clock down. Jaime Fernandez scored off a steal but he didn't find much help around. Cedevita kept full control of the game and another triple by Petrovic seemed to seal the outcome, 59-66. Estudiantes was not done, however, as Gabriel shined with a three-point play while a triple by Ellis set the crowd on fire, 65-68. Petrovic silenced all Estudiantes fans with a dunk and Rudez added free throws but Oliver and Jasen got Estudiantes even closer, 70-72, with 4 minutes left. Bazdaric sealed the outcome with a three-pointer and a layup in transition by Draper sealed the outcome, 70-77. Estudiantes kept trying but Cedevita was already celebrating that their Eurocup season is still far from being over.

Head Coaches

PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"I am proud of my players. We all would have loved to go one step forward, but the opponent played better than us and we have to admit it. I want to congratulate Cedevita. We have to feel good with what we did, move on and think about our next Spanish League game. We have to clean our minds and battle hard in the final dates of the Spanish League regular season, knowing that we can make it back to the Eurocup. We tried to change the game in defense, but they followed their game plan. They are a good team and knew how to play this game."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"What we did borders on science fiction. Everything we've gone through this season is now worth it. After 20 year, Croatia has a representative at a final four and the players are the biggest reason why Cedevita made it to Treviso. The most important thing was to hold on in the initial two to three minutes. Players who have not played as much were presented with a huge burden in this game. Vedran Vukusic was fantastic after one month without training and today made a crucial basket. Petrovic in the two games against with Estudiantes showed that he can be a decisive player."

Players

JASEN, HERNAN
Asefa Estudiantes
"We couldn't make it to the Eurocup Finals and feel that we have disappointed all our fans, who gave us all they had. We did the best we could and it is always bitter to be eliminated. Once we look back at our Eurocup season. We will be proud of what we did. Cedevita played well and managed to control the game tempo, icing the game at the right time."
VUKUSIC, VEDRAN
Cedevita Zagreb
"We saw in Game 1 that they had trouble defending the pick-and-roll, so we attacked all the time. It seemed a bit dull, but we scored every time. No one expected that we could come to Madrid and dominate for 40 minutes like we did, and now against Unics in the Finals we have a chance to win. We've already proven that we can play against them. Even though they would otherwise have been the favorites, at the Finals there is never a favorite. "
