THE TAKE

Benetton Treviso hosts Aris TT Bank for just the second time ever on Thursday in a showdwon with ramifications for top half of the Group C standings. These teams have met only once before, in the semifinals of the 1997 Korac Cup, which Aris eventually won. This week, with both tied at 2-2 for third place with Pau-Orthez, they're playing for a chance to hold onto that position - and possibly even share second place in Group C - as the halfway point of the regular season nears. Benetton is undefeated at home, but coming off an 83-67 loss at Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow, where defending three-pointers hurt the Italian camps. Aris edged Pau-Orthez 74-72 last week behind Terrel Castle's 19 points and a double-double of 15 points and 12 boards from Jeremiah Massey. This game promises a number of intriguing matchups, any of which can decide the game for either team. Massey (7.7 ppg., 8.7 rpg.) is coming off his best game so far and this week he'll have to get the job done on defense too against Marcus Goree (16.5 ppg., 7 rpg., 1.5 bpg.), the Euroleague's fourth-ranked player so far according to index ratings. Nikos Zisis (13 ppg., 5.7 apg.) has developed into a top-grade playmaker and an effective scorer whose array of moves will challenge Castle. Alex Scales (16.3 ppg., 2.7 spg.) and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (9.3 ppg.) bring non-stop scoring abilities that Marco Mordente (10.5 ppg.) and Terrell Lyday (8 ppg., 3 spg.) will need to handle. Benetton will also have a new face in the squad for the game at guard, recently signed shooter Bryant Smith. Spencer Nelson (14.5 ppg., 7.5 rpg.) is a dangerous all-around forward, who can score inside (71.4% of two-pointers) or out (50% from the three-point line), but must deal with Aris rebounding ace Michael Wilkinson (12 ppg., 7.5 rpg., 3.2 spg.). One key factor in this game could be rebounding. Aris ranks second in the league with 39.2 boards per game, while Benetton is dead last with 27.7. Goree, Nelson, Angelo Gigli and Joey Beard will all need to do their part on the glass for the hosts. Aris players will also need to be careful with the ball against a Benetton defense that leads the league with 15 steals per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"Defense and teamwork were the keys for our last win in the Italian League, so we will try to repeat this good 'mood' in the Euroleague, too. Every game is a battle for 40 minutes when you play at this level, and we have to be ready for it. Since that Aris is at the same point as we are in the standings, they will do their best to go over us to get their first win on the road. We respect them, but we have recognized in recent weeks the right way to play better, so we want to continue in this way, knowing that eerything depends on us."
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"Playing against Benetton Treviso, the Italian champion, in Palaverde is not an easy task. They are a very smart and well-experienced team with excellent players like Marcus Gorree, Gigi Soragna and Nikos Zisis. Fortunately, we will travel with no problems, as Abdul-Rauf and Giannoulis are back to work. To be honest, we are ready to fight for our first win on the road in order to keep our dream alive. In our group, it's really important to protect the home advantage and win at least once away. As a team, we have learned many things two weeks ago in Napoli and I hope we will have the confidence to take advantage of the opportunity in Palaverde."

Players

MORDENTE, MARCO
Benetton Basket
"We want to keep our win streak at home in the Euroleague going as long as possible. Keeping our homecourt unbeaten is one of our main priorities right now, and to do that we need to give our utmost attention, since Aris is getting better and will come here to fight until the end. They count on many experienced players, so we can't let them play their basketball. We need to try to continue to be intense and aggressive in defense. We expect to improve our skills and our standing."
GIANNOULIS, YANNIS
Aris TT Bank
"Let me congratulate all my teammates on their work against Pau-Orthez. It's really difficult to be out of the court and smell the game without playing. Now, I am back to work and ready to help my team to win on the road against a very strong team like Benetton. I have never won in Treviso, but I feel that now the time has come to do it. The mission is extremely difficult, however our team defense can give us possibilities to fight until the end."
Matteo Soragna - Benetton treviso Benetton Treviso put on one of the best defensive displays in the history of the Euroleague on the way to a 64-42 win over Aris Thessaloniki on Thursday night at the Palaverde. Treviso held Aris to the third-fewest points in a Euroleague game, highlighted by a 4-point fourth quarter. Matteo Soragna led Benetton with 19 points, while Terrell Lyday and Nikos Zisis added 10 each. Benetton improved to 3-2 in Group C, joining Pau-Orthez for a share of third place. Those two teams meet next week in France. Aris dropped to 2-3 and holds sole possession of fifth place. Benetton led for most of the game, but Aris always found away to remain close. That ended with the score 36-30 early in the third quarter, as Soragna led a home-team spurt to take the lead to double figures. Then Aris went cold and remained that way until the final buzzer. Jeremiah Massey led Aris with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Alex Scales added 10. The hosts won the battle of the boards 45-32. The record for fewest points allowed in a Euroleague game belongs to CSKA Moscow, which held Krka Novo Mesto to 35 in November 2003. Union Olimpija allowed London Towers 40 in December 2001.

Both teams started off cold as neither side scored in the first two minutes. Mike Wilkinson eventually broke the ice from the line making one of two free throws. Soon after, good ball circulation allowed Marcus Goree to put Treviso on the board. Veteran Giorgos Sigalas regained the lead for Aris off a steal and layup. The visitors' zone defense troubled Treviso as Goree and Soragna were again off target. The name of the game remained defense as three minutes went passed without a basket until Spencer Nelson went to the foul line to bring Benetton within 7-8. Kevin Fletcher and Angelo Gigli traded baskets and Sigalas and Zisis did the same to fix the score at 11-13. After free throws from Gigli and Massey, Lyday scored in penetration and Marco Mordente followed him to regain the lead. But Scales drilled a three that ended the period with Aris up 16-18.

Alex Scales - Aris TT BankLyday scored at the start of the second quarter, but Scales was very lively for the visitors, drawing two fouls off Bryant Smith in 30 seconds. However the accuracy on offense was not there for Aris. Soragna capped a 9-0 run with 5 points of his own to give Benetton a 5- point cushion. Lyday went through the traffic for a layup, causing Aris coach Andrea Mazzon to call a desperate timeout as his players could simply not find the way to the basket. Aris had scored only one basket in five-and-a-half minutes. Benetton continued to increase its lead, which swelled to 30-20 with three minutes on the clock. Treviso shut Aris's attack down once more, this time forcing shot-clock violation. Aris finally made a jumper and a free throw, but Soragna took charge netting 6 consecutive points, good for a 36-23 lead. Two free throws from Terrell Castle fixed the halftime score at 36-25, with Aris posting a disastrous 9 turnovers and 2 assists.

Castle opened the second half with a free throw, drawing Lyday’s fourth foul and forcing the Benetton playmaker to the bench. Aris dominated the early going as Massey got 4 points, prompting coach David Blatt to call timeout with the score at 36-30. Soragna picked up where he left off, draining a three. Treviso responded well to the visitors' slow tempo as Soragna netted a spectacular fade-away jumper to increase the cushion to 11. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf’s first two points were met by a reverse layup from Joey Beard. However Castle stripped Mordente for an easy Massey layup on the counter, reducing the deficit to 43-34. Two free throws from Castle brough Aris even closer. Zisis got his team back on track with a free throw and a mid-range jumper. More free throws from Massey and Smith and a spectacular no-look pass from Smith to Soragna left Aris with a mountain to climb entering the last quarter, 49-38.

Goree got his team going in the fourth with a free throw. A dunk by Massey was met by two free throws from Gigli, as Treviso continued to slow down Aris’s offense with a full-court press. Sloppy plays from both teams saw the score stalled for a while at 52-42 at the halfway mark of the quarter. Mazzon called another timeout after a brilliant left handed layup from Mordente as Aris’s hopes started to fade away. Goree landed the knock-out punch, beating the buzzer for a 14-point cushion with three minutes to go. The hosts kept using the full 24 seconds and strong defense to cruise to a valuable win and keep their 100 percent home record.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"Congratulation to my team for their defensive job. It was not easy to limit such a team to 42 points. Captain Soragna had a great game, all the national players got in tired but he will come back and everyday he gets better, today he did a great job on both sides of the court, he stopped Scales, which was our main aim, and he scored on offense. We prepared very well for this game. My players knew we were going to play a 60-70-point game. It was a kind of ground war rather than air war."
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"It’s normal to say that we lose and win as a team. We tried to rotate but we obviously missed too many three-pointers, even good open shots. We didn't do well today, let's forget it and think about the next game."

Players

BEARD, JOEY
Benetton Basket
"We knew it was going to be very physical so we prepared for it, in the last three days we concentrated on this. We did not play our best game but we did all right. It’s obvious that defensive pressure takes a lot out of us and it showed on offense. But overall, even though we didn't show all our potential I am happy with what we did on the court today. We proved that even when we can't find the basket we can win anyway."
ZISIS, NIKOS
Benetton Basket
"A win is a win. The game was maybe not the best for the fans but we have what we wanted. We did a great job in defense and in rebounds. Aris managed to get us to a low tempo game but in the second quarter we reacted well and defended well. It was the first time in Treviso that I was playing against a Greek team, the team from my hometown even though I never played there professionally."
