THE TAKE

French League rivals Strasbourg and Nancy will face off in the ULEB Cup eighthfinals series Tuesday in Strasbourg. The two teams knows each other very well and any tactical novelty by the coaches could make the difference. Strasbourg got off to a strong start in regular season Group B, but then dropped four in a row before winning its last game. Nancy claimed second place in Group A by winning its final three games. The two teams have similarly impressive defensive numbers; Strasbourg allowed just 76.7 points per game, while Nancy conceded 76.4, but offensively Nancy posted 84.4 compared to Strasbourg's 77.5. Strasbourg lost its last two home games and may use 75 points allowed as a target for victory. Coach Eric Girard's side, which struggled with its three-point shooting (32.3%), had four players average double figures in scoring, led by Chuck Eidson's 14.9 points per game. Eidson also produced 6.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists, making him an all-around threat. Big men Claude Marquis (11.3 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) – who with one more offensive board will take sole possession of third place in the ULEB Cup all-time offensive rebounding list – and Aerick Sanders (10.3 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) are the other prime scorers, while Afik Nissim (10.7 ppg.) provides instant offense off the bench. Shooters Lonnie Cooper (8.3 ppg.) and Michael Smith (8.8 ppg.) can be deadly from downtown, but they have lacked consistency till now. Their defensive changes from man to zone could create trouble for Nancy, which committed more turnovers (16.6) than any other team in the regular season. Nancy was also last overall in steals (7.7), but shot well (54.4% 2FG, 39.9% 3FG). Its last addition, guard Branko Mikisavljevic (16.6 ppg.) give them another lethal weapon on the offensive end. Forward Tariq Kirqsay is the star, after averaging 17.5 points and a ULEB Cup-best 10.1 rebounds per game. Big men Cyril Julian (11.7 ppg.) and Dan McClintock (11.3 ppg.) gave Nancy solid scoring options inside and guard Cedric Banks (11.5 ppg.) filled the baskets from outside. Sixth man Maxime Zianveni (7.9 ppg., 5.1 rpg.) is also a major weapon for coach Jean-Luc Monschau. Anything can happen in this local challenge, with tough matchups between electirs scorers and decisive big men to fuel the open court play. One thing is for sure: There will be a French team in the ULEB Cup quarterfinals for the second time after ASVEL got there in 2005-06.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIRARD, ERIC
Strasbourg
"This is going to be a really interesting franco-French opposition because one of the two teams is going to represent France in the quarterfinals. A great game is preparing at the Rhenus and we know this is going to be a difficult game versus Nancy, the best team at the moment, first of its group in ULEB Cup, first in the French Championship; but the SIG is going to give its best, only 48 hours after the championship game against Pau-Orthez, supported by a full arena and transcended fans standing behind their team."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
Nancy
"Currently, Strasbourg is the French team to be on top shape. They have got all elements on the floor. They are imposing them for 7 games in a row now. Their inside game is the strongest in France. Their outside game has got a very good percentage in all shooting zones. We have to be very concentrated and take control of the ball if we want to stay in the game and to keep chances for the second game at home."

Head Coaches

GIRARD, ERIC
Strasbourg
"I feared for the physical condition of the players, but when it deals with players who really want to play this is no longer a problem. It was a really interesting game to coach for both Jean-Luc and I, the players were fantastic considering the context, that is the game, only two days ago, against Pau; but the players managed to do one more serious game against one of the best team of the French Championship and the ULEB Cup."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
Nancy
"It was a real good game, first; a wonderful opposition of two talented teams that gave their best. The result shows that we had a though opponent and a good rhythm. It’s the 12th game in two years between the two teams, only one time the score difference was over 10 points. We always have that kind of opposition between us and I admit that it’s a pleasure to play against this team. From time to time in this game, each team had its moment."

Players

GIFFA, SANYA
Strasbourg
"At the beginning we played on a wrong rhythm, we let them slow us down and had problems with some fouls. We knew we had this game in our hands, we had a strategy but we just had to put things in order. We did not win over three points we just won this game, now we are going to play in Nancy and have to win. It’s just halftime."
